Honestly, a good chunk of TotK’s OST is really a huge nothing burger. Don’t get me wrong, I love ambient themes when they’re done well, in fact the new Forgotten Temple theme is probably one of my favorite Zelda themes to date. But I think the way a lot of the instruments were used in this title could have been done differently. The Piano wasn’t really used in any interesting ways outside of the Skydiving themes, and honestly, I think BotW did the “broken world” theme better. If they really wanted to change the atmosphere that badly, they could have just made entirely new compositions for the new Field themes, but instead they traded complex composition for sweeping woodwind chords (the Field (Day) and Field (Night) themes). While not bad, it just kinda take away from the appeal of the original versions in BotW. And all of the memory themes are good for what they are, but once again, we’re kinda boring as music. It’s got an amazing soundtrack, but outside of select themes, a lot of it is just ok. (The second phase of the Demon Dragon Battle theme was a travesty and is genuinely some of the most boring Nintendo themes I’ve ever listened to.)
