Blue Ridge Impressions Brian Balmages
Просмотров 11 тыс.7 лет назад
A festival-winning contemporary overture in B with limited instrumentation, Brian Balmages' Blue Ridge Impressions is destined to be a classic. The skillfully written structure around a 4/4, 3/4, 4/4 framework offers exciting material from the opening themes through a classic maestoso ending. - video upload powered by www.TunesToTube.com
Beyond the Summit Brian Balmages

This musical celebration embraces our human nature to constantly strive higher. Everyone must climb a personal "mountain," and this metaphor reminds us to continue our journey and never stop - even when we think we've reached the summit. Opening with a soft rhythmic motive in the percussion, the piece builds to a grand thematic statement. A beautiful lyrical section includes several melodic sta...
The Awakening Brian Balmages

This captivating composition was inspired by that "breakthrough" moment when people start to realize there is much more to life than they originally thought. Opening with a woodwind ostinato, the horns introduce the melody that becomes the focus of the work. The pace continues through a beautiful lyrical section that soon explodes into a triumphant ending of brass under a flourishing woodwind o...

Brilliant Hysterical I saw it with Zero Mostel on Broadway. I still remember moments of shtick that broke me which did translate to the film version. Director Richard Lester missed an opportunity to make what should have been one of the all time funny Hollywood movies.

Lester was a wonderful director of loose-limbed film comedy including the Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night." Unfortunately. "A Funny Thing..." was a mismatch for his talents.

It's a great song, with a few historical inaccuracies. A freedman can't become a Senator, only the son or grandson of a freedman might become a senator. The only exception was during the year of four emperors, I believe either Galba or Otho made a freedman a senator, but then Vitellius had him crucified which was against the law (can't crucify Roman citizens, only barbarians and slaves). Also, Rome was a Republic, not a Democracy. Athens had Democracy, but they also had slavery. The Greek view of slavery was worst than the Roman view, Greeks believed some individuals had a servile condition, it was in their very essence. Romans thought it was a matter of luck whether you were free or not. You could be going on a trip to Greece, get captured by pirates, and sold into slavery. Or maybe your daddy has a bill to pay, and he sells you into slavery. Shockingly enough, a few freedmen who couldn't find work ended up selling themselves into slavery, it was rare, but it did happened. Slavery was so common, that some slaves were allowed to have their own slaves. Wouldn't that be a hoot? Your master beats you, and your slave applies salve on your back. Still, I can understand a slave would fantasize about becoming a senator.

@@GuitarClassVideos True, I'm sure Evita has more than a few historical inaccuracies, but Argentinian politics isn't my area of expertise. I still love that musical, and this one. I just hate it when Roman history gets modernized to the point where it has our sensibilities instead of theirs. I'm not against fiction, but when the truth is better than fiction, go with the truth.

There are a couple of 'fakes' on RUclips regarding this number in which this same record cover of OBC is shown, but either the 1972 revival with Nathan Lane or the 1966 film version is playing. The trick is to know David Burn's distinctive voice which starts this number as Senex. Unlike Gilford, or Mostel, Burns only played Senex in 1962 original Broadway production and sang in that recording of same, and this is definitely NOT the same Broadway voice we will all remember from Hello Dolly as the original "Horace Vandergelder" so we don't have the OBC version that is suggested from the cover. If you listen to Burns, its vocally a little tighter than this. David clipping off the notes more quickly and rhythmically. The gravelly tone is natural, not exaggerated into an animated growl immy Durante style . If you want to check it out, look for Long John Silver's postings of FTHOTWTTF album. That's the real deal. By the way, David Burns actually died on stage from a Heart attack in try-outs for a Kander and Ebb musical in Philly. He died with his boots on, doing what he loved in an early version of 70, Girls, 70.

Sondheim has said that Bernstein was critical of the 'wrong notes' in this number, but that he agreed with him in hindsight. Sondheim, in retrospect, felt that he was trying to prove his capability as a young composer by over-decorating. I think he's right but, god, you can hear his unique style running right through this song
