01:42 - a meme from the 1930's

In 1971, my family took a cruise from Miami to the Caribbean. I was 12 years old and my brother 14. On the ship, Song of Norway, they held a costume contest. I'm not sure who came up with the idea, but on a whim we decided that my father, brother, and I would enter the contest as the Marx Brothers. The ship provided some materials, so we got a cheap party top hat and covered it with black paper. My mother had a curly blonde wig and, voila, my brother was Harpo. My father made a big mustache out of black paper, got a used cigar from a stranger (the ship didn't sell any cigars) and he was Groucho. (My father had an ever so slight resemblance to him anyway). I was Chico, and simply wore a small hat that my dad's friend had. We entered the "comedy" category. As it turned out, several of the other contestants had real costumes and had real jokes associated with them. The only "joke" we had was that my brother and I shook hands and I ended up with my brothers leg. We thought we were totally outclassed by the others. But, to our total surprise, we won first prize - a trophy and two bottles of booze. The best thing to come out of it was a nice color photograph of us.

No AA meetings in that house!

I’m so glad this book came out. I heard how she had a collection of notes for a memoir at the time called “Do Tell.” And I was as to learn it was never published. But now we have this! And I look forward to reading it.

I wish I had known Susan Marx. She is markedly different from most Hollywood men and woman. She was a lovely person without the need to be noticed and lauded. It is very nice to watch a real person describe her life with another very real person. They obviously loved each other until they died.

Toe to toe with WC Fields is something to be proud of.

Harpo was loved by all. Susan is too self-deprecating. She did what was needed as she co-starred with some big-name actors; never a superstar, but beautiful and quite adequate. A perfect couple.

I don't doubt Mrs. Marx's word for one second, but Harpo said that she was always hanging around and that SHE proposed marriage to HIM several times before he gave in.

More Gummo hate from this woman. First of all, Harpo was an adult who could make his own decisions. I’m sure Harpo met with a multitude of the finest heart surgeons before making the decision. Harpo chose to go with his brother’s opinion and this set that witch off. She was not a doctor. My hope is Gummo told that witch to go to hell. Let’s face it - Gummo was a successful agent and entrepreneur. She was a nothing. I will NEVER read this book due to the vitriolic she had for the brothers. Can’t stand the woman.

According to Harpo, from his autobiography "Harpo Speaks", he found out after the fact that Susan asked to be seated next to Harpo at that dinner and they had met before - she reminded him about it - and she was the one that wanted to get married. Great read btw.

When I was 13 my family moved in the summer to a new state. I didn't know a soul and was bored sitting around the house all day. My mother said they were having a Marx Brothers film festival at the local theater and asked if I wanted to go. It started at 9:00 in the morning and lasted until midnight. It was me and an eighty year old man that sat about seven rows behind me. He asked me if I liked the Marx Brothers and I told him I did and I listed all the movies I had seen . After three movies there was a 15 minute intermission. When I came back to my seat, it was loaded with candy, a full box of popcorn and a large Coca-cola. The projectionist said the elderly man had purchased all of it, placed it on my seat and told him to make sure I got it and that he was impressed with me and my knowledge of Marx Brothers movies. That was over 50 years ago.

Never forget when i was prob 7 or 8 years old watching a scene where harpo was leaning against a wall when a copper ask him if he was holding the wall up harpo beeped his horn and nodding yes ,the copper told him to move along then the wall fell on him, i couldnt stop laughing

Chico was always my favorite. I think he was the funniest.

@Cavalier Films LLC; though it's nice (and somewhat typical) of you to try and 'boost' the view of Ms Marx's acting skills, I don't think she appeared in any way to be one to think only negatively about herself (in fact, she DOES say she's a 'realist'), or has regrets about not continuing in it. Though these are snippets, and I'm guessing the ones you found which show her skills off to their best, they're not notable - nothing presents her as if she was 'it'. I'm not here to denigrate her, and I don't think she did, either. All people have innate abilities in one area or another, and through practice or classes, they can be honed even more precisely. No matter how long one tries to hone their ability in an area in which they don't have any innate sense, it will never make them the apex of all others. I can't paint. I'd love to, and, yes, I did try and read up on it, took classes, etc, but there comes a point when one realise;, 'this is as good as you'll get'. I doodle for my pleasure. I'll never be mistaken for Michelangelo (di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni), (Claude) Monet, or (August) Macke,and I'm not being 'negative' about myself. I am being realistic, just as Ms Marx was (and says 01:25). One of the WORST things parents are doing, today (and this ISNT from my thoughts, but, IS the option of many clinicians and other professionals), is instilling in their children's head they're 'better' than everyone else, and can 'do anything' (if you don't believe, check for yourselves). I'm NOT saying anyone should 'put down' their children, I AM saying they should focus on what interests them the most. I applaud Ms Marx for not continuing to do something she felt wasn't suitable for her (no beating her head against the wall would've never changed her opinions and feelings). Ultimately, it's a question of 'why?' Why continue in a profession that doesn't bring oneself any joy of accomplishing something or making a difference, or an impact, etc? It's readily apparent that Ms. Marx did have a strong sense of self, something many people today don't understand or have. It's not 'in' vogue to say her strength was as a wife and mother (and before anyone is dumb enough to say I'm sexist, or ANY other 'ist', you DON'T know me, other than that, I think a person should do whatever it is THEY want to do). One of the loveliest moments in this is when you see a snap of her and Harpo's family, ALL decked out with Harpo hair. To me, it just says, 'We don't take ourselves too seriously', and they were happy. As Judge Judy said, her mother told her to find a man who makes her laugh. 'Looks fade. But having someone who makes you smile and laugh can last a lifetime. When all's said and done, and one's breathing their last, I think reflecting on one's life and being able to smile while doing this is really what's most important. One last thing; I SO enjoyed this brief video with Ms Marx, I IMMEDIATELY downloaded Speaking of Harpo, and am (voraciously) reading it. Thank you 🎥🍿🎬

Great interview. I've loved the Marx Brothers since I first watched TV in 1963, way after their peak, but they were still so popular. Easy to see why, they were superb. On marriage, it took me three tries and it became clear by the time I married the third one that I'd finally married my best friend. If you don't consider the person you're going to marry as your closest and best friend, who gets you and is okay with you on your worst days (and vice versa), do yourself a big favor and don't marry that person. Lovers come and go, best friends are forever.

Love Susan Marx, I see her as a very sassy kinda woman in a really good way!

A shining moment in every Marx Bros. film is Harpo playing the harp. So skillful and moving. He was a great artist.

I was crazy about the Marx brothers in the 1970s as a teenager. In Chicago they ran a Marx Brothers movie every Friday at midnight. I read Harpo's Autobiography back then and loved his stories of his teen years. I believe he is the most beloved actor ever. Only wanting to bring joy and laughter to the world. God bless Harpo and Susan.
