Poor Man's Whiskey with Jeff Miller performing "Catfish John"
Phil was a strong Catalyst in the Jam band scene . Tks Phil ❤
❤ Greatful Dead ❤ the great experiment continues forever and e v e r , ,
The true genius in this band,it was hard for me to stop listening to him in the shows I attended trying to listen to them as a unit,Phil sounded like that interview, full of creativity and inspiration, and at the same time always in a dialogue with the others, listening carefully to what they were doing and responding brilliantly, thank you Phil for all what you brought.
He sounds ed exactly like Fred McMurray.
Great interview, Phil is an excellent storyteller.....this guy is a musical genius!
" I got an invitation to join a band " . Man , didn't we all , ( and most grateful ) . I'm 70 and a half now and some of my most enjoyable moments are when I pick a Grateful Dead track on you tube and play along in my own way . Thank you Grateful Dead .
a lil piece I wrote about the night... spiltbeanz.blogspot.com/2024/02/sweet-relief-tribute-to-ramblin-jack.html?fbclid=IwAR1xMFUYMsnBX4J_CmwOm_zRxCch0l6skwUhJATwP07-AVEdS--HShjl8Lw
One of the best explanations of how songs are written. I'm a songwriter and I couldn't have said it better!
Great show!
What a great story!
WHAT A NIGHT!!! It's was my birthday, so fun. Thanks all!
HBD! Great show for sure
thank you@@fenwaywest
Nice story, Bobby - LOL
Damn, this guy really gets it. He should start a band or something
14:44 Who?
What is the name of this movie?
❤
Think jerry is in heavan?? I hope so. I soooo hope he is.
What a fantastic interview!!
❤
Yeah, it took root, no doubt.
Thank God I lived at the same time as the Grateful Dead.
Phil has great hair
Otiel sings beautiful I have always loved high time...then again, I feel that way about all of the deads music. Lwnfa
I think Phil might be Leonard Nimoys brother.
I love Phil. He's a nerd, and I LOVE nerds! ❤❤❤ I miss dancing in The Phil Zone 🎉
Love this 🌹
RIP JERRY GARCIA
This is AWESOME 😎
Great interview 🌹
Huh I was 4 years old when the first music to turn my brain inside out was Guy Mitchell and Tommy Steele versions of Singing the Blues in 1956/7. Wasn’t as lucky as Phil in joining a band though, except a fun bedroom band with a few friends 😊
too much background noise
PHIL PHIL PHIL PHIL PHIL
i wonder if jerry's breath smelled from the diabetic ketones. Not joking , this was around his coma.
Garcia was in a diabetic coma in July '86, so this interview occurred a few months later.
Interesting.
So many similarites between the Dead and The Velvet Underground! John Cale and Phil Lesh both have classical and avant garde backgrunds; both bands started as the house party band for Kesy or Warhol; same original name, as Phil notes; Lou came from R and B like Pig Pen; And yet the started such different movements.
So: orchestral music on the radio - violin lesons - youth orchestra - trumpet - jazz - composition study - then an invitation into a working bar band. In short - your basic run-'o'-the-mill rock 'n' roll origin story.
hey phil, as you know it worked. thanks!!
When I brought my energy shit was the best. Good times. My favorite Bassist.
I heart the Grateful Dead first time at the German Rockpalast in 1981. It blew me away . There was Elvis ,Beatles and Stones ,but these guys were playing different. Great people the Dead
Apropos Bach, I believe Jack Bruce said once that Bach was the greatest bass player ever
I've been listening to the Dead since Aoxomoxoa days, and I've always thought that it was Phil, more than any of the others, who was responsible for the "feel" of their music. Of course everyone always focused on Garcia, but when you listen to what Phil was doing on the low end, it was as if there were two solo instruments. Of course, nothing could match Phil, Jerry, Bob, and Billy when they were really cooking. Listen to "The Eleven" from Live Dead, or "Hard to Handle" with Pig fronting the band. Incredible musicianship, always.
Phil was relatively older than most when the Dead started, actually as The Warlocks. He was 25 in the Spring of '65
What's the source of this interview?
They were all great together & all very smart but Philly did have a head start on any band but that him joining the dead was just bound to happen ! So glad , there will never b anymore Gratefuldead band but I have to give Bobby credit for his new band mates !
Oh yea I met Rock Scully at the bar & he put a Deadhead sticker on my back ! When I got home here in Maine I sewed it on my Jean jacket !
What a grate musician & memory because he met me in 1978 , knew me immediately & took me & my niece into the backstage area on Mother’s Day in 1980 , my dream came true plus he asked me y I didn’t use my name to get in but I told him I wasn’t ready until that time !
This is the best description of The Dead’s music I think I’ve ever heard even from Garcia or Hunter.
What year was this interview?
Pleasure to listen to
Doesn’t refer to Bob at all…. huh…. I think I know why, but who really knows.
Phil is jus dat nigga!
