Ground Source Heat Pump - How it Works
just spent 50k, but hey... i will save in electricity !!! :')
What is the "heater' you left for the shower. Is it the old CH boiler?? If not, what was it????
The outdoor unit looks like an air conditioner
Pretty sure some companies use the same shell for the pumps and air conditioners.
Is there any point in going for MCS accreditation if you're not going for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant? MCS is a load of box ticking crap - install something more appropriate for a new build - like a couple of 2kW a/c units and a DHW Heat Pump? This is another clueless ASHP instal - it's a shame they didn't contact you beforehand. Why wouldn't you install the Bosch a/c for heating in residential situations like this? Your website seems to imply they are only fit for "an office, summer house or conservatory extension." but most heat pumps in e.g Sweden are air to air.
Omg so much space taken by this 😮
Guys, believe what the gentleman said in the video. I’ve my heat pump mounted on the wall. The winter just passed was a long nightmare. Very noisy and I could even feel the vibration inside the house sometimes. This summer I will have to relocate the condensers and put them on the ground. This will cost a lot of money. If you are using it just for cooling, wall mount should be fine. Otherwise, put it on the ground and do it right the first time!
Looks over engineered, overly complex, overly priced no doubt. Soooo many failure points on install and maintenance. Keep it simple! Like a combi.
Finally someone with an eye on the future.
Did you really need the buffer and all those pumps?
Yes 😀
How do you sell a heat pump to a customer without deceiving them about gas boiler actually being cheaper to run than heat pumps due to high electricity prices? Paying double/tripple and then paying more on bills is just an awful proposition. Who is the target market here?
When it comes to selling a heat pump, honesty and transparency are crucial. It's essential to educate customers about the benefits and considerations of both heat pumps and gas boilers. While it's true that the initial investment might be higher for a heat pump, its energy efficiency can lead to long-term savings, especially if electricity prices are stable or decrease over time. A lot of our customers actually pay less than they did with a gas boiler boiler. We recently visited a developer who has installed ASHP's, battery storage and solar on their properties and the bills were around £13 per month in the colder months. Additionally, heat pumps are more environmentally friendly than gas boilers. This can be an important consideration for customers concerned about sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint.
@@AltoEnergyLimited thanks. Solar panels and battery storage would be a very small fraction of the market. Remember government is planing to have 600k heat pump installs meaning combi boilers have to come out and heat pumps come in, for properties that aren't even close to being ideal scenario like you describe. Having the whole thing on life support from government grant is also a poor incentive for installer to train up. If the grant changes the whole time getting qualified could be wasted as without the grant there is even less financial sense in installing a heat pump. More discussion around the elephant in the room which is extremely high disparity between gas and electric prices.
@@DigitalPosionin almost all regions electricity cost is 4x the price of gas per kWh. A system achieving a CoP of 4 is already cheaper to run customers can then do even better with specialist tariffs, solar PV and batteries and savings from cancelling the gas service and its associated standing charge, they use much less gas (including what’s burnt in power stations when needed) so more gas at lower prices for me and you.
@@edc1569 CoP 4 wont be realistic on mass scale that is being targeted here. Not all properties will get it especially with insulation rules being relaxed. And not all installers will be able to install it to its full potential and verse the customer in correct tariffs and what not. On whole gas boiler will be cheaper to run on average. What we need is for gas prices to go up (and they won't because of political reasons) or electrical prices to go down really to a point where electricity is about twice the price of gas. Then you can issue blanket statements like heat pump will save on your gas bill. But until you can say that with full confidence to a customer really it is a bit of a tough sell as I mentioned earlier.
What do you think of the changes? P.S. If you're looking for a quote for a heat pump, feel free to get in touch - www.altoenergy.co.uk/contact-us
Good that its been dropped for wall as that would have been a nightmare for my house. Doing the loft anyway so no buggy there. Got 100mm atm so going to 270. Didnt realise it didnt kick in while 8th. Thought it had already happened.
Yeah, there was a bit of confusion as to when it would start. Good to hear that you're making insulation improvements regardless 👍Let us know if you need an ASHP quote.
These things are shit
I'm on a small close of properties owned by a Housing Association. Some houses had air-sourced heat-pumps installed, the intention being to do them all, but the complaints from the first few halted the work. I'm still on oil, not great but better than a retro-fitted heat pump. I have no issue with a properly engineered ground-source pump in a new build with the land available for the coiling, but air-source in the UK during the winter is near-useless. Latent heat extracted from Minus 6C?
Plenty of air-source heat pumps in Scandinavia and central Europe, where it gets considerably colder than -6C.
@@beatonthedonis And all working at max level, pump and compressor going crazy, eating electric and barely getting to a decent heat out put. The difference in Scandinavian housing is the high level of insulation that UK homes don't have.
Think of a freezer. You can set it to -12C and it will take all the heat out. You can set it to -18C and it'll do the same. The difference is the amount of energy needed. In a properly insulated house with a properly installed system, it's still cheaper than gas. Is the issue the heat pump, or the insulation?
That's why we recommend home owners invest in insulation before installing a heat pump. Otherwise it's the equivalent to running a fridge and leaving the door open.
@@AltoEnergyLimited True. If you have a new build, making sure that insulation in the entire house exceeds spec, then heat pumps can make sense. Where I am, in a brick-and-block 70's bungalow, with a cavity and solid floor, other than double glazing and loft insulation there's little can be done. I'm sure an air-tightness test would fail miserably. It's due to the complaints by residents who had them fitted that the project was halted.
Nice video. But a 11kW heat loss on a 220m2 new build is kinda poor. I would be hoping more in the 5-7kW range. My 240m2 70's build after a retrofit is 13kW at -2 and due to construction constraints not very well insulated in certain areas.
I will tell you what he was thinking at the time when he decided to put a heat pump in.... I'm bored
They will never get rid of gas boilers. Another climate change swindle to get ya money. I'd rather burn my pants than fit a costly heat pump.
Even if you don’t believe in climate change, do you agree that at some point in the future, we’ll run out of fossil fuels (though not anytime soon) and therefore, it’s probably a good idea to transition to sustainable energy and heating systems?
@AltoEnergyLimited in a hundred years maybe we will run out. Technology will advance energy production at some point I guess but in the history of the climate we are near an all time low in co2 in the atmosphere. I'm very pro increasing co2 tbh, very good for the planet. As for the cost of stuff like heat pumps, only way it becomes the normal is if we give it away. Most my customers cant afford a new gas boiler, no chance they can afford a heat pump system . New builds it can make sense on larger houses with buyers who can afford it. Can't see how they can put it into first time homes. Most people under 30 can't afford a house nevermind one with more expensive heating systems. Best to insulated the crap out of them.
Heat pump are rubbish. I had one, they take hours to hit your house and the electricity cost is enormous
You don’t get immediate heat like you do from a gas boiler. You’re supposed to leave it on so it can keep the temperature constant. It’s the most efficient way to run them. If you’re treating a heat pump like a gas boiler, you’re going to run into issues.
So many issues are that people don't understand them, and expect the radiators to be roasting hot like gas heating.
@@weeeeehhhhh60% user error, 40% installation. If people just chuck em in without following MCS and doing their homework it’s bound to fail
If you're a heating installer or a developer who would like to start installing heat pumps, get in touch to learn more about our MCS Umbrella Scheme 👍 www.altoenergy.co.uk/installer-quote-form
ASHP are a good idea in new homes, but retrofitting? A lot of people will have to remortgage to get their houses up to the right spec for ASHP to work properly. I'm all for reducing carbon emissions, but come on, the reliance on electric depends on burning gas to ( mostly in the UK ) produce electric, which, with the huge demand that's going to happen with ASHP and electric cars etc, that's more gas that'll need to be burned, leading to higher carbon emissions, do the math, it's not rocket science. Point is, is doesn't matter how good a heat pump is, it's more about the property it's in, i.e insulation, right size pipework, door and windows, which is why new build works, but the cost would be astronomical when retrofitting to get the property efficiency. Also, what's the point of a green machine if you are supplied with non green electric? Still contributing to global warming even when you think you aren't.
Absolutely, they're great for new builds. No one is saying that all homes should be retrofitted with an ASHP. Many are unsuitable for one. That said, plenty of homes in the UK are suitable. Regarding burning gas to produce electricity, you're right, it's likely more gas will need to burned at powerplants to create electricity. The difference is, powerplants are considerably more efficient at doing so vs gas boilers. Plus, over time, more and more of our electricity is coming from renewables (we're at about 40%) and the trend is only going higher.
@@AltoEnergyLimited I do agree to point, however, as you say, many homes are unsuitable which means when gas boilers become illegal to install, what option is there for those unsuitable houses? The only way is to spend thousands to get a house to a higher spec that's makes it better for a ASHP but still not ideal. So for example my house, early 70s build, suspended floor boards, windows that are 20 years old, not the latest spec insulation, retrofitting might work to a degree as I don't have microbore pipework, but the house as is wouldn't benefit from having a heat pump fitted unless the extra cost on getting those specs much higher is spent 1st, even then it still wouldn't work at its best and would require to be on for much longer leading to higher running costs. My point is there is no silver bullet, but heat pumps are being touted as the be all and end all, but there is a huge lack of transparency with regards to costs of actually getting something that works effectively as a retrofit and not just as new build, unfortunately £7500 from the government won't go far in a huge amount of cases.
@@gardgas1I think you'd be fine with one my mum's 60s bungalow with suspended floors has one and it's a crap install and it's running at about a cop of about 3. The council installed them so the rest of the house is how it was prior and it works absolutely fine. Is it as cheap as gas no but it ain't far off.
@@gardgas1 Hopefully by then, the price of heat pumps has reduced significantly and the government is able to support those who need extra work completed beforehand.
@@gardgas11950’s 3 bed semi, cavity wall, double glazing, crap insulation in loft. 6mm overlay insulation to floor slab, underfloor layed on top. ASHP has halved my gas bill. You’d be surprised

Sorry to hear about your flat. Was your heat pump installed by an MCS accredited installer?
@AltoEnergyLimited It sure was start to finish heat loss calculation install hand over the lot.unfortunately cowboys went bust.
@@Newit2 🫣Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately there's a lot of cowboys out there which is why we'll only recommend installers who we've worked with and have a history of good workmanship. It's a shame because installs like yours really tarnish the industry and heat pumps in general.
@AltoEnergyLimited MCS is supposed to fix that obviously it don't complain to who.Got your money do one.
@@Newit2Unfortunately in your case, MCS can't help if if the company's gone bust. Do you still have a heat pump now? If it's a Mitsubishi, Bosch or Samsung, we can certainly help with any tech issues. Or if you need an installer to fix something, we can also recommend someone.
Standard armour flex is no good for outside which is black
We have that Samsung one.. it's crap, and costs a boom to use
Was it a retrofit? How’s your insulation?
@@AltoEnergyLimited new build in 2021. So didn’t have a choice. Hot water is ok for 3 quick showers. Or one bath 😂 it’s just the heating part takes over a hour to get….. warm 🥶 had someone look at it they said just leave it on all the time. So we did. Except for the frequency of a heat pump penetrates through the neighbour's house. They are not happy about it, which is understandable.
Looks good except that white expansion tank on the floor 🫣. If only ya threw some diamond plate on the walls to make it next level!
I have it but my boiler is 6feet
Dm expansion vessel incorrect other wise first class
Pro press. Still sweet though
Shouldn't there be some sort of inhibitor in the system to stop sludge accumulating from the radiators?
They are installed for years now in the netherlands. ruclips.net/video/t85bO_K-taU/видео.html
Very nice except that potable vessel laid down. 🤦🏼
My question is why Samsung and not LG or Daikin?
This was a project we worked on with Samsung.
Samsung hae way better service then LG or Daikin. Especially Daikin is way to bad with there service here in the Netherlands
Cost. Maintenance, no figures mentioned. Looks hideous installation on the outside. If there's a problem and the insulation ices up from the inside when it rains or damp weather the cop will be compromised even further.
All that expensive gear to replace a tiny gas boiler that has twice the heat output. We are going backwards in technology in the name of the climate scam.
Higher output doesn't = better. Even if you believe climate change is scam, one day we will run out of gas and oil so it's probably a good idea to have alternative heating sources that aren't dependant on fossil fuels :)
When no one is willing to say a price ,you know its expensive!
The end user paid less for this than they would've for a gas boiler
Cost ?
What model is that heat exchanger and what was the reason to use a tubes one instead of a plates one? Thank you!
That’s not a plate heat exchanger for hydraulic separation but a low loss header, commonly known as a buffer. It’s for allowing two sections to share the water but have separate pumped circuits.
Tidy just a shame its crimped joints and not soldered!
I think you are missing the point of these HT heat pumps. First there is less need to upgrade bigger surface area radiators and for some that will also maintain the interior aesthetics as well. Second as they will run hotter radiators there may be less need to upgrade the insulation building fabric to retain the interior heat. It will be needed but perhaps less money needed to upgrade and retain as much of that interior heat. In many old houses (like victorian/edwardian) the cost to do so can be massive plus many old homes need that "natural" ventilation to avoid interior bad air and mould/humidity. Lastly many HT users find the concept of mildly warm radiatiors in a very cold winter to mean something is wrong even if the heating is not technically running 24/7 vs older boilers that turned on and rand the rads at a very high temp to get the home hotter in a shorter time. Many of those moving from gas boilers to HPs (or considering them) will ask around and find just warm rads to mean they are not for them. HT heat pumps solve that even if they will rarely ever hit that max temp (much as a well set up gas boiler does not run at max power when the water/air temp means its not needed)
All that in a semi kitchen no chance.
Looks nice craftsmanship but i dont want that in my house my combi gas boiler hudes away in a little cupboard
For most homes, all of the pipework etc can be hidden inside of an airing cupboard :)
what mm cooper pipes use from the heatpump to the collecter and next to the radiators?
It's not free at all! Every single tax payer in the country is paying for it, whether they want to or not!
Absolutely, taxes fund many essential services we all benefit from. While it's true we all contribute, the aim is to ensure everyone has access to important resources and opportunities. It's a complex system, but the goal is to support the common good. Thanks for sharing your perspective!
Why the mindless music ?
We appreciate different tastes in music! What might be mindless to some can be quite enjoyable for others. We're curious, what kind of music do you prefer?
All that expensive gear to replace a tiny and much more effective gas boiler? No thanks this is tech going backwards.
Heat pumps are incredibly efficient once they're up and running. They work differently to gas boilers but offer great long-term benefits, like being more eco-friendly. It's a shift, but it's about embracing new tech for a greener future.
Balls! I want my system to work when its cold.
Heat pumps work perfectly well in colder weather :)
Can’t see the need for a buffer or low loss header here, sadly it’s become common install practice as really they are only required hydraulically in very few situations and almost always results in distortion if installed.
When is a buffer needed ?
Looks nice; great work
Great work by our installer
