In this video, we show you how to cast off your Flamenco Floating Fashion scarf. This cast off technique works on similar ribbon yarns.
When you start to join the squares together how do you fasten the beginning so that it doesn't come undone. I hope it makes sense.
Hi Cathy, so sorry about the delay in replying. It's usually not a problem in the beginning if you leave a long enough tail. About 6 inches of tail should be good. If it's being troublesome, you can weave in the tail first and then use it, anchored, to begin the slip stitches.
@@CynthiaHyslop Thank you
This is the first crochet video I've ever watched! (I'm trying to sew neater seams for my sweaters knitted on straights!)
Thank you so much for watching. My apologies for not checking on comments sooner!
Thankyou so much for such a useful training video on how to block and pin a knitted shawl. I have just completed my first shawl, and now feel confident in trying to block and pin for the first time. I’ve just bought my equipment and can’t wait to get started. Your explanations are excellent!😃👍
Wonderful! I'm really glad you enjoyed it. Blocking is a bit of a process but well worth the effort.
Thanks for this. Just finished knitting 30 squares for grandson's blanket. Directions say "join squares" Yikes. So glad to have found your tutorial.
That's fabulous. I hope you like this method.
Thank you, it is important to see you showing every step and how it looks on both sides.
Glad it was helpful!
Given the choice I would much rather deal with a rogue loop than left-over weaved in end. Thank you for that tip.
Glad it was helpful!
This is Chuck. I am new to knitting. I love your squares and the idea of making a crocheted together Afghan. I have a couple of questions. What size are the squares? How many cast on’s? Thank you.
Hi Chuck. Thank you for the question. I'm afraid I don't remember what the squares were. I think they were from a Rowan Knit-A-Long. The squares were knitted.
Thanks Cynthia. Good info about the Rowan Knit-A-Long. I appreciate it.
Do you have to block every time you launder these?
Good question! The answer is yes.
So clearly and simply put! Thank you. I have to join bigger squares and I'm doing it in black to edge the pieces.
Fantastic idea to do the edging in one colour.
It is very beatiful and the explinations are very clear.
Thank you so much, Michelle.
Why didn’t you take the first stich?
Hi Michelle, thanks for asking. I believe Barb might have been saving the first stitch for when she attaches the next square (below, going horizontally).
what size crochet hook do you use ? beautiful work
Thank you, Barbara! I don’t remember what size hook we used, but generally it would be the same size hook as we used for the squares (same mm size of the squares were knitted) or maybe one size smaller.
Do acrylic or other fiber shawls need blocking too? Just wondering if I need to go to the expense of buying the foam blocks and wires. How long would you soak acrylic shawls for?
Hi Virginia. I'm so sorry that I missed your question earlier. If you're working a lace pattern (with lots of holes) then I would block it to open up the patterning, regardless of the fibre content. You may find that other, less stretchy fibres (e.g. cotton) may not require blocking later. I think blocking wires are a good investment for knitting shawls in general.
Gorgeous! Great tutorial as well! Thank you for all the information
Thank you for the compliment. We're very glad that you found the tutorial helpful.
That shawl is beautiful! What is the pattern?
Thank you for asking! The shawl is called the "Hot Shawl" (we originally made it using our Hat Trick hockey-inspired yarn and so it got a hockey-inspired name). You can find it here: rivercityyarns.com/collections/rcy-original-designs/products/hotshawlpattern (available in print or pdf download) or on Ravelry here: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hot-shawl.
Just had the worst time bl9cking a shawl and realized I forgot I had bought these wires. Made it look so easy. Thank you 💗
Thanks, Paula. I hope your next shawl goes easier for you.
I love this demonstration. Q: what size crochet hook should I use with thick yarn?
Usually your yarn will come with some recommendations on the ball band. If the recommendations are for knitting needles sizes, I generally use the same size hook. But the best way to tell is to crochet a swatch and see what kind of fabric you're getting. Then you can use a larger or smaller hook depending on what kind of project/fabric you'd like to make.
@@CynthiaHyslop Kia ora Cynthia..thank you so much for getting back to me all the way in New Zealand. Hope you are all keeping safe and well. My blanket squares edges/ tops and bottom rows not as neat as yours so I am still working out whether the crochet or the slip seam is a better way. I will let you know how I get on xxx
Great video. Just what I need for the shawl I just finished. Thanks!
Thank you so much, Sharon. I'm really glad to hear that.
This is beautiful. Where could I find the heart square pattern? Thanks for the video.
CM K Hello and thank you! The blanket is the first Martin Storey KAL project. If you visit knitrowan.com and search for Martin or look for his KALs, you should find it. You’ll need to join the Rowan page and the pattern is free for members.
Thank You I have been searching for this method, now it’s my turn to achieve Sucess.
Excellent! I wish you lots of success. Thank you for watching.
Love this thanks!
Thank you, Joyce. Come again!
This video is very informative. Music is a bit loud though, I had to keep adjusting the volume to hear her.
Hi Cindy, I'll see if I can fix that... I now leave the music off and use a microphone. Our later videos are better but I appreciate your comments and I'll see if we can't redo this one soon.
You explain it so simply. So easy to follow your instruction. I have watched several and like yours the best. Thank you.
Thank you so much, Rose. We appreciate that!
There seems to be some kind of noise/music in the background? Had to switch off...
Hi Penny, sorry you didn’t like the music choice! This was an early video and I’ve learned a bit since then. We’ll have to reshoot this one when we can.
Where do you get all those blocking boards. Usually they come in a set of nine and I need more!
Haha, Myrna! We bought two sets.
Will they interlock to make different measurements? My set comes in nine blocks (36x36). They are numbered as how they interlock, as well as ruled for measurement
Hi Myrna, you could try purchasing another set and see if they will lock in. If not, you could just place the new ones next to the originals to have proximity. Ours all fit together in various combinations (e.g. you can make them long and rectangular or square or just make a frame with them.
@@CynthiaHyslop You can get six foam blocks on Amazon. At two by two feet each, that gives you a 48 x 72" area, and most of my triangular and rectangular shawls would fit. i think the set of six is about $26 which is a bargain I think....
Well thank god you exist Barb.
We're so glad you found the video helpful!
Thank you for your incredibly clear and straightforward video
Thank you so much, Lesley. We appreciate your feedback.
Unable to hear the video. very bad audio
Sorry Stephanie. We’ll put this one on our re-do list.
Great video, ruined by the awful music. If you could redo, it would be a keeper!
Thank you, Patti, for watching and commenting. I'll see what I can do about the music.

Hi Aziz, did you have a question for us?
Awesome video! Thank you! Beautiful shawl.
Thank you! Diane did a great job of knitting the Hot Shawl pattern by Holli Yeoh but blocking is really the key!
Thank you, great instructions for crochet join and end weaving !
Thank you, Julie, for watching and commenting. We appreciate it very much.
Brill! Thank you for this. You make it look so easy.
Thank you, Becca. Glad you could join us. Hope you get a chance to try it yourself very soon.
I so happy that I happened upon your video. It is very helpful! Thanks!
Thank you, Carolyn. I'm glad you found it, too.
I definitely am going to try that! Thanks so much!
Did you try it, Kiarra? What do you think?
Both yes Cynthia. i tried to keep them the same size but it just didnt happen
Okay. You could try blocking the squares to try and get them to conform to a similar size. Or, you could try knitting/crocheting a border around them to make the smaller ones bigger. You can sew them together in a kind of "jigsaw" look but you'd likely need to knit/crochet some "filler" pieces. I'd recommend blocking first.
can you do a video of how to sew them together if theyre different sizes???
Oops, sorry Kiarra, I didn't see your comment earlier. If they're different sizes, it becomes tricky to sew them together without puckering on one side. If you're making a blanket, as we were doing here, I'd suggest putting a border around the smaller square to make it the same size before sewing them together.
can you do a video of how to sew them together if theyre different sizes???
Hmmm... that's interesting! We'll try to work on one like that. (We'll have to see if we can get Barb to work on a project with squares of different sizes!) You must be in the middle of something like this? Are they different widths as well as lengths?
I'm assembling a 12-square knitted afghan, and there is a lot of variation in stitch count on the squares. I am using an i-cord join which requires picking up stitches before knitting the join. I am compensating for the variation by skipping stitches along the longer edges. The locking stitch markers help immensely - I put them in evenly spaced so it is not too hard to see where to skip. This would work the same on a crocheted join. Feel free to share this suggestion if you want.
Great tutorial. A " bodkin" might work better than a tapestry needle. I am going to try your method to join some very large knitted panels that I purchased at a thrift shop.
Thank you for watching. Let us know how your project worked out!
Thank you for shareing this, I found it most informative. Wish there was better music though. It was very distracting.
Thanks for commenting, Catriona! One of these days I'll redo this video (now that we have more experience) and we'll do a better job with the music.
What's the pattern to the copper/tan looking shawl In the background? Oh and thanks for the tutorial it was amazing answered all my questions about blocking
That one is called the "Rock Island Shawl" by Jared Flood.
Such an interesting pattern - is it your original or can I find it someplace?
Hi Aileen, it is a Rowan pattern and you can definitely find it. Scroll down just a little to read the comment under Carolyn Wright. You'll find a link to the pattern and Rowan has great video support as well. Happy knitting!
Great video. Thanks, you answered all my questions!
Yay!
great video...but, can't hear you!!!
Oh no! Is it just a certain section of the video? It seems to work okay for me... but perhaps I can adjust the sound in a particular section? Do you know about closed captioning? It's a very cool feature that RUclips supports as well.
Hello, how did you get the design on the panel. I would like to make this blanket, do you have a video on that.
Hi Carolyn, the pattern is by Rowan: Martin Storey Pure Wool Superwash Worsted Knit Along 2016: www.knitrowan.com/designs-and-patterns/online-collections/martin-storey-pure-wool-superwash-worsted-knit-along-2016. Rowan produced a lot of videos to support this project and you can find them here: www.knitrowan.com/designs-and-patterns/patterns/martin-storey-kal-2016-final-making-up
Nice video
Thanks so much, Christine.
I just wanted to check with you lovely ladies as I am knitting Martin Storey's Bountree pattern from Simple Shapes Cotton Glacé. I am at the part where he asks to "Slip stitch button band in place." The button band is done in moss stitch & will be stitched onto the garter stitch fronts. Will this stitch you've described beautifully work well on the wrong sides of this project for me?
Hi Maggie.I think this method works brilliantly for all kinds of seaming, including buttonbands. It's such a neat technique that you can use it on the right side or the wrong side. But the best answer of course, is to tell you to just try it. If you don't like it it's very easy to remove it and try again. We'd love to see a picture of your finished garment.
love your video.. however the music is TOO LOUD... have to adjust the volume all the time... thanks, hope you can fix this?.. all the best!..
I'm sure I can... I will try to fix it this week. Thank you for letting me know.
I am having the same problem x
Thank you for your patience! I've uploaded a "version 2" with the music turned down. I'll delete this earlier version in a few days.

Hi, I am just learning how to crochet but im curious, what is blocking and what does it do? I hadn't heard of this. Please enlighten me someone?
svazquez714 Blocking is a process that allows you to shape knitted or crocheted projects. It's particularly important with items like shawls, which have designs that need to be stretched into shape. When you watch this video, you'll see what Diane's shawl looked like before and after blocking as well as how we did it. Hope that helps!
fabulous! I have knitted this gorgeous afghan & can sew it up properly now😀
Thank you so much for your comment! We'd love to see a picture of your finished afghan. You can find us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter or send a photo to cynthia@rivercityyarns.com and I'll post it for you. Yay!
Of course I will when finished!😀 I knit the Spice colourway for the 2016 KAL & 9 shades of PWW for the 2014 Martin Storey KAL
