Real love is unselfish. Real love puts the other person’s best interest ahead of our wants. This scene shows that beautifully! To keep peace in the kingdom and to keep the Prince safe, she gave him up.

Can we just take a moment to consider exactly what it is Cinderella does here? She gives up the man she loves, perhaps her only chance of happiness, the land she has spent her whole life in, to prevent war. More, she sacrifices her reputation too. She is willing for Edward to see her as a liar so he can move on and she has to carry on living knowing the whole truth and possibly never able to move on. When you look at her face, you actually see how she changes from girl to woman.

@Mike thank God someone agrees! I was watching the film and thought that it was just another one of those that perpetuates the myth life is a fairy tale. Cinderella is a really lovely person and everything and then a fairy Godmother comes in and performs a few tricks, a Prince comes along and whisks her away, solves all her problems. That is a large part of the film, but at least this one also shows a political side. That not everything is perfect and being royal means taking on a duty and responsibility that requires hard decisions.

@Mike Bizarre thing is that I also like the bit where her step mother is sort of forgiven and is sitting at the wedding. It acknowledges the fact that, for better or worse, she and the step sisters are Cinderella's only family and of course she required her step mothers permission to marry. Cinderella is the better person because she doesn't condemn them despite how they treated her. Different versions of Cinderella show variations on this.

Cinderella gets called out all the time for being a doormat who gets walked all over and then gets everything magically fixed for her. It’s blaming the victim and I’ve always thought that it’s so unfair to expect a literal child slave to save herself from such torment and be strong in an active sense of fighting back to fix her problems, when it’s not safe to do so or the change of success is so low. The strength each iteration has is her resilience, her perseverance, her commitment to hope in the face of extreme adversity and this choice she makes in this song in this version exemplifies the strength the character has. This Cinderella is even more gentle and meek than others (animated 1950 Cinderella talks back to her stepmother all the time quite abrasively for example) but here she shows how strong she can be and just how self-sacrificing she is prepared to be for the good of others. I’ve always found Cinderella to be a fantastic role model; it’s sad to admit but sometimes life’s problems can seem insurmountable and sometimes you really are powerless to effect much meaningful change beyond just getting by and trying to help in small little ways. In those dire situations, having the strength to keep hoping and carrying on is very admirable.

Tell him that it wasn't love Say I tried Say I lied Tell him I'm unworthy of What he feels inside Tell him that you heard me say What seemed right Just last night Simply seemed to fade away In the light of day Tell him of the countless other lovers Who I've tantalized, victimized Tell him of the many other times I've played this heartless game Just the same Tell him what i really am Is just a cold and empty shell Tell him anything But not that I love him Tell him that it wasn't love All we shared All we cared Make him hate my memory Make him glad he's free Paint me evil, paint me cruel Say I broke every rule Make him feel that he's a fool For his loving me Don't let him know Why I must leave him Why I must go so far away For if he knew How much I love him No power on earth Could make him stay

Is this from a director's cut and/or extended version rather than the original theatrical release which I saw as a child? I only remember the second half of the song, the part which starts when she is going down the stairs ("Tell him that it wasn't love/All we shared, all we cared..."). I remember seeing this film when it first came out...and I remember crying during this song because Cinderella has been asked (forced, really) to give up everything for the sake of her country and the man she loves. Within just a few hours of being reunited with the prince and given reason to have hope and feel happiness, someone snatches it all away from her and even tells her that she must leave her home (which if nothing else has the advantage and comfort of being familiar). Granted, she'll no longer be under her stepmother's thumb and won't be treated as a servant anymore...but even that wouldn't be nearly enough to compensate for what they're making her give up.

Honestly not sure. Found the whole thing on RUclips somewhere (I think?), and the whole song was in there pretty much as is. Not sure how the story would've benefitted if the song started from the stairs.

ánh hồng, I own the DVD, so yes. It ends very well. It also has an interview with the Sherman brothers who wrote the music and most do the story for this film. They said they wanted to make a Cinderella film from the perspective of the Prince and not just Cinderella. I have always loved this film, and this is my favorite song of the film.
