So is HomeHaven Court (block of flats) built on the lake?
It's almost completely unrecognizable these days, different layout too, although some buildings do still remain, like the Bridge Inn, the Crown and Anchor, some of the smaller shop buildings and of course the Marlipins museum which is over 1,000 years old. Shame that the looking Norfolk Bridge got taken down and replaced though, it looked fantastic (and I'm _just about_ old enough to remember it being there) but it was very narrow. It never would have coped with modern traffic lol. In my younger years I researched the area (just as a personal interest project) and uncovered all kinds of interesting images and tried to piece together in my head how Shoreham looked. The town does have a fascinating history.
What a fabulous bridge, shame about its successor.
Brilliant editing
Brilliant…so glad I remember it before the entrance was demolished !
My father (a Master Sailmaker in Dukes Street Brighton from 1932 and after the War into the 60s did quite a bit of business with Suter in Shoreham, also Lady Bees in Southwick. Grandfather pulled his yachts up on Brighton beach with the fishermen's boats from 1890 onwards. Good times.
I can remember walking across the concrete bridge many times whilst I was at the Grammar School from '53 to '63. It was of a good solid build, the new one doesn't sound as though it will last long though.
Thank you Frank, an interesting and persuasive view on museum exhibits and presentation
Excellent Roger! I remember going there in a small group taken by Mr. Bennett (our history Master) from the Grammar School in around '57 and it was jaw dropping; that started me on my love of history. I remember the dusty shelves with ships blocks and lamps and a whole host of various ships paraphernalia, all very exciting and shame on these other so called museums with their Perspex shelves, fancy lighting effects and television screens, thats not history, its futuristic clap trap.
Grandfather trained at shoreham in1915 went to france was gassed on the Somme i.In hospital in Belgium weregggran went over to nurse him. When he returned to England he completed 52 years work for fry co at portslade.Born 1882 died in 1949. Gggran born in lancing1888 died in 1973. He was born in East Preston and her lancing.had a son and daughter moved to Burgess hill in1915.
Absolutely brilliant, incredibly done. Really brings old shoreham back to life, many many thanks.
i currently work at the swiss cottage and i so badly want to see the lake cleaned out just imagine the finds there are to be had
When was the old bridge replaced?
This is wonderful!!
As a child in the 70's sitting in the backseat, I remember driving past the Swiss Cottage many times to visit my grandparents in Shoreham. Now I know that interesting history. Thanks.
If only we still had the old bridge... beautiful!
That was fantastic, would love to see more of old Shoreham, thank you Roger, that must've taken a lot of time to put together, loved the old Norfolk Bridge, especially at night xx
Such a loss
Brilliant
Brilliant, thank you!
What a fantastic little movie! Thank you so much.
Very good bit of History. Well done Roger.
What a town it really was.
Is your dad Berni Bateman ?
The predictable/comical, 'Those Magnificenmt Men if their Flying Machines' music I feel belittles the bravery of these early pioneer aviators.
Ugly but practical.
Hi Rodger, do you by any chance have any images of the old foot bridge at Shoreham around the 1960,s?
Say "slide show" next time. I expected vintage video.
What a moaner you are,Jesus Harpo,ungrateful
If you expect it, you should collect and upload it champ.
There’s always one arsehole
Love the montage, great job! Amazing how many small industries once existed at the turn of the century. barrel and box makers, carriage builders, wood and iron shops, dress and shoe makers, all kinds of manufacturing that would be put out of business by mass production performed by hourly wage earners. We blame politicians for this, but the fact is, centralized production lowered costs, making everything affordable for everyone. First the railroads then the roads with modern cars and trucks completed the transformation of small, self sufficient villages into bedroom suburbs to big cities. We have always lived in a changing world, and those who complain the loudest are the ones who cannot change with the times.
It is beautiful to see pictures from the past. I often spent my holidays in Shoreham-by-Sea, it is such a calm and nice place with a little centre, a station, a churchyard, lots of little shops, pubs, water and boats. And very nice people. Hope I will be able to come back.
Well said. And shoreham is still a lovely place to visit
Give thanks to them men who never returned. Really good little film
Thanks for putting this together. A wonderful video that really captures the Swiss Gardens as they once were
Very kind of you Ray. Good to know these Shoreham videos are still providing enjoyment.
Did you know Betty is being restored?
Hi, thank you yes although I haven't checked progress for some time. I will now thanks for your reminder.
Is Betty now Tally Ho?
Thank you for this. So interesting. Am just watching Esther Waters and they mention the servants are to have a ball at Swiss Gardens Shoreham so was curious to see if they existed.
The old bridge had character .... not like the silly impractical new thing, more like something from Canary Wharf and made out of impractical materials. The glass panels are getting smashed - Oh! what a surprise!
All those pretty houses .... lost .....
Nice Job, Roger. A picture may be worth a thousand words - a thoughtfully edited video, using well researched and sympathetic resources; doubly so.
Sorry to be so long in replying Fraser - thank you for your comments, it's alway good to know people like the 'videos'
Fabulous .....make it look like that again!
First time I have seen this. I think it is wonderful. I was so absorbed I kept forgetting I was not looking at moving pictures.
Very Interesting,
INTERESTING ALTHOUGH I need the ditections fromEnfield to swiss gardens
Really appreciate the time and effort it must have taken to put this together. Spectacular. One I shall remember and tell people about - its worth seeing.
Great photos. Such an interesting part of Shoreham history.
brilliant !
Pleased you like it, thanks - it always frustrates me that a lot of Shoreham's architectural history has been demolished but I guess little would have remained of Swiss Cottage by now anyway as virtually all the buildings were made of softwood.
Thanks for the great video ...I read about the Swiss Gardens and I always wondered what is must have been like . You have captured what it must have been like well done .
go to the swiss cottage the car park is where the old green house used to be and we still have the west lake
Lovely video cheers
What a great video! I found this by browsing through the shorehambysea.com history portal. Some amazing time travelling there. Would love to see more.
Very kind of you to say so. More 'ghosts' here www.shorehambysea.com/shoreham-historical-photos/shoreham-history-photo-collection/ghosts-from-the-past.html
