Why I Moved from California to St. Louis?
I made a video there yesterday at the annual Ice Carnival: ruclips.net/video/YZHlvr6y4ZA/видео.html
This is really good
Hi My wife and I moved from the Bay area to Folsom and not sure we are going to stay because of cost. Still working over 55 folks. I need good outdoor biking, and not gray all the time. jobs and affordability for homes
Let’s talk and see if St. Louis is a fit
its like in ant big inner city. The well to do move out into country (soon be suburbs) and leave the crime. Its a sociology study that called the spiral project. It was started using Chicago. Its why STL was 800K in 70s and 80s and is now less than 450K people. Still love that crazy little town and shoutout to TedDrews!
I love STL!
Born n raised here my home town
I grew up here and have never had problems. If you are an idiot and dont pay attention to surroundings or have any street smarts, then any city in America is dangerous. I work all areas, all zip codes and in the so called "hood" and everybody has been good to me. I Just show respect to everyone and you will be fine.
Well said
Very informative
Thank you so much!
I have spent a lot of time in San Jose and St Louis. You can not compare the two. San Jose is safe, clean, friendly. St. Louis is dangerous, grimy, drug infested, crime is the financial marker for the majority of the north side of St. Louis. When I go to San Jose it feels like you are in a peaceful beautiful place. St. Louis will knock your block off. You have no clue about the 314.
I was born and raised in San Jose and have lived in St. Louis for over 10 years now. The north side of St. Louis is definitely not great. But in the county and other parts of St. Louis I feel very safe and peaceful. I grew up in the east side of San Jose and I feel more safe in St. Louis. Outside of North STL 😋
The sheer number of free areas or 'pay for parking only' in St Louis has to be unrivaled in this country. I know that there was originally a political reason for that, but it's become somewhat of a tradition.... St Louis Zoo is free, and is probably one of the top five zoos in the country (if you factor in cost, it is easily number one) Places like the City Museum or even the Magic House have some costs associated with them, but they still strive to honor the St Louis tradition of 'free'. You could choose a different place to go every weekend for a year, and be very wallet friendly.
Exactly! I’ve traveled to a lot of cities in the US and I do believe it is an unrivaled in this country. There are so many things to do that our budget friendly. I like your method of choosing a different place every weekend. That makes a great quality of life f
I find most amusing is how well your your zassessment is correct and have lived here many years. I really laughed about your take on Stan Kroenke but fortunately have also been a long time Mizzou fan that mostly follows college football now. Yes, thr move for Kroenke was about about increasing his wealkth for their large TV market. St. Louis should have been given an expansion team. In all my over 70 years living here never has there been such a villain as Stan Kroenke I honestly think the biggest concern is crime and sometines otherwise good neighborhoods are just too close to the hoods. Most though involves kids breaking windows and stealing cars but some even have guns.
Appreciate you watching the video. I have noticed that Stan Kroenke is more of a villain than the Rams themselves. Most of my friends don’t watch the NFL anymore because of him, but over the years I’ve become a big Mizzou as well. There is no doubt that STL is a great sports town.
I liked your video and I have lived here many years. I have visited California several times so this was really interesting. Your assessment is very fair. I have seen St. Louis change from being just a city with some living in the County to a very spread out region going well beyond the County limit. I grew up in the city. There is concern for crime in the city which is usallly broken car windows and cars stolen by kids maybe even with guns so wonder how you compare it. All part of the under served parts of the city. You may not like the high humidity in the summers here but there are four seasons and my favorite is the Fall. California of course has the Pacific ocean over the Mississippi river. I worked in IT and many years ago had a good friend also in IT head to San Francisco for what he thought was a huge salary increase for an IT job. He ended up sharing a place with three guys and returned in a year. I share you view on parks and walk one each morning in retirement. St. Louis also does not have an NFL team and you never want to mention the name Stan Kroenke.
🤩
What if I was born here?
Try to stay out of the HOODs of STL 😉
@STLPM too late
Excellent video! Amazingly clear and comprehensice narrative.
Appreciate you!
You shouldn't listen to out-of-town real estate agents
We have a lot of nice houses in lemay you could buy
I agree. I believe that it is a nice quiet safe area. I was just saying that it could be a little boring compared to other parts of St. Louis.
Give me a house there
I got you. Reach out to me
You dont want to to be underserved...Stop the crime. I grew up in Rock Hill which was super mixed in the 60s, just saying.
I live in St. Louis and work remotely for a company in Silicon Valley. It’s the best of both worlds, in a way, except for the shifted schedule which can be challenging. But overall it works pretty well for me.
That sounds like a pretty good gig. I was born and raised in San Jose and know that the jobs there are very good paying. But to live in St. Louis and be able to afford a place to live and have a great quality of life is truly the best of both worlds.
👍TY.
Thanks Bricks
It sounds like you’ve only been to the few nice areas in downtown 😂 St. Louis has the 2nd highest murder rate in the country. Theft and crime here is terrible. People steal cars left and right. Not sure what you’re talking about 😂
There are pockets in the city where crime is higher and you definitely need to watch out. In the county and surrounding areas, it is pretty safe.
The river culture around the St. Louis area. It's something I would like to get involved in. If you own a boat, there are a lot of islands on the mississippi river that you can visit.
Just being around the river like the Meramec and going fishing is something a lot of my friends like to do
Delmar street is crazy! you go from burned out abandoned homes to million dollar homes in a few blocks.
That is very interesting how that works
I too am a California transplant and my financial stability has grown 10 fold.
I’m so happy to hear that! We know that the cost of living is better in St. Louis. What do you think about the quality of life in St. Louis?
St. louis is the gateway to the ozarks and most people in st. louis and especially the 'midwest' dont even get this. It begins a geographical shift that is very different from the rest of the 'midwest'. And you have to go south and west towards arkansas.
St Louis native born and raised. I live in Jeff County Fenton unincorporated. As with anything pay attention to your surroundings. The area has plenty of things to offer.
STL really does have a lot to offer
While St. Louis City has a few attractions, it's safe to say that most people prefer actually living in St. Louis County, which is a separate entity entirely.
I see that is the case most of the time. Usually, young professionals like to live in the city.
There are 79 neiborhoods in st. Louis. Some are or barely there any more. But as wit g other cities, there is good a d there is bad. From a Texan, who thought about moving there. Good luck beautiful city.😢😮😅😊
Great Video! I reside in St. Louis, this was very informative for people looking to move here. Subbed
I appreciate you watching the video. I think St. Louis is the gem of the Midwest. But there are some things you do need to know. Overall, I really enjoy living here.
The city is useless and there is really no reason to have to go there. The people who live there made it that way by choice. 😅
I disagree- love all the diversity of food choices in the city! Tower Grove park is also a great scene!
What a stupid comment. I have lived in the city since 2002 in the CWE and a couple neighborhoods in S. City. So much to do here. Culture. Food. Sports. Muny. Parks. Festivals. Etc. But hey, if McDonalds and Olive Garden are your idea of fine dining and you prefer Walmart to actual main street business, stay away. We don't want you here anyway
Stay in Jefferson county. You know nothing about the city.
I used to live in suburban Los Angeles (San Fernando Valley). I feel much safer in St. Louis, even downtown and south-city areas. But you do need to stay out of places in the "hoods". Everyone knows where they are and it's easy to see what the situation is just by the vacant lots, run-down houses, etc.
I feel the same way about the safety. I am from the East side of San Jose. And I feel safer in St. Louis. You are definitely correct that there are some “Hoods”. But, there’s really never a need to go to those areas.
We also have the most authentic “Little Italy” in the country, “The Hill”. Great restaurants and bakeries, try Vitale’s and get some Cannoli! ✌🏻
The Hill is another Gem that St. Louis has. Thanks for the recommendations.
Ho ok what about 10 warnings before moving to California 😂
I should do that video too! 😅
Really, really good video man. Lived here 41 years, and I love it here. I travel a lot, but always look forward to coming back home when the trip is over.
Me too! I love the feeling of sleeping back in my bed. St. Louis has a lot going on but most from the outside have no idea
Hopefully u didn't bring ur California values with u, we like our guns and freedom leave it be
I really do like having freedom and less regulations in Missouri. It took me a while to get used to the gun thing but I am good now. In California if you have a gun, you are either a criminal or in a gang. It’s different in STL.
@STLPM now u live in st louis get a gun and get trained welcome to Missouri
St louis is a blue union city ... voting shows that ..
😊
Wish it’s not too ghetto though so many ghetto people in Saint Louis unless you go further west side
Thank you for this. I love my city. Anyone can focus on the negatives in WHATEVER city you live in, but if you want to find the positives where you live at, you have to change your way of thinking and open your eyes. Thank you for this great review of our amazing city.
St. Louis does have a lot of positives going for it. Let’s be grateful for what we have.
It’s about time the city and county merge. People in the suburbs hate on the city yet you all wanna claim it so bad. You should correct yourself and mention whatever podunk municipality you live in rather than saying you live in St. Louis.
Oh yeah well those so-called podunk municipalities (somehow more high I.Q. than anywhere downtown btw) are doing what you will not and that is better the economy and standards of living for families. There would be no agreement to merge until the city unscrews itself up and cleans up. Which would have happened by now if the city bothered to care about doing so, instead of letting it fall apart and become unoccupied. Won't even fix a single damn road in town and you want to ask county to merge there. Comedy.
I live in St. Charles, and I won't go anywhere near the city of St. Louis at night. Bad enough during the day.
@ that says more about you than anything else. I live in the city
@@Waterchop - Eight thousand breakins at the four parking garages surrounding Busch Stadium, JUST in the last four years. There are only three types of people in the city..Criminals, victims, and those that WILL be victims.
@@Waterchop - My last time on the Metrolink, heading east from Hanley Rd., I had THREE blacks tell me that it simply wasn't safe for a white person to be on it. THREE.
I thought I was the only one who drank beer while trick-or-treating
🤣 where I’m from if you were drinking beer in public, you get arrested or a citation. I love that St. Louis is very chill about it.
Most of the areas that are "underserved" would not be underserved if the people that live in those areas would not rob those businesses blind when they do open in those areas. Many times over the years, grocery stores, Wal Mart, department stores, shops are restaurants have tried to establish themselves in those areas. After all, lots of people with few options, it should be ideal for a business to open and thrive. They open and it isn't long before those in the area (not everyone, of course) are stealing everything that isn't nailed down. They use and sell drugs in the parking lot. Rob and assault any customers that might come in. Carjack anyone willing to frequent that business. Before long, the grocery store, Target, Walmart, etc. closes down. They are losing too much money or it is too dangerous for employees and customers. Then people whine and complain that they live in a food desert. That the nearest Walmart is 10 miles away. That is why these areas are "underserved." Stop stealing from these places and they would be happy to serve these areas.
Appreciate your insights. Neighborhoods will not get better unless you take care of it
You definitely missed South Grand, Grand Center and Cherokee St which is where you will find the authentic Mexican food.
I am on Cherokee weekly because my favorite food is tacos. St. Louis has so many spots I couldn’t fit them all in.
U City is the best! We live here because there's a very nice Jewish community here. Costco and Schnuck's have a lot of Kosher food!
I did not know about all the Kosher food! You taught me something
I also moved here from CA 3 years ago. I and my husband live in U City. We are so happy to own a nice brick house. I agree everything you said. New Costco opened and nice Asian stores are near us on Olive Blvd(I'm Japanese). We moved here because our friends from CA moved here. There are group of Californians here and we all love St. Louis. Thanks for the post. Very pleasant and clear.
Happy to see another California transplant here! I was surprised by the quality of life and culture here. U city has the best Asian food!
Nice summary. Thanks for posting.
Appreciate you watching.
Why do you keep using the term "under served"? Those are the areas where people live like animals and shoplift the stores out of business. I was born in StL and it's embarrassing to see the steady decline of my home town.
I’ve never been to STL but got it in my head to move there sometime. Thinking it would be centrally located for my parent to drive to us from Ohio in about 7-9 hours versus the 2 day drive to us from Ohio to Texas. I live in San Antonio right now and love the fact that it takes 10 minutes for me to get to Sprouts, Natural Grocers, HEB, Walmart, 2 big malls, airport, downtown, chiropractor, Airrosti, 3 different Asian markets, on and on I’m just so centrally located that I would absolutely miss that.
It is a good place to be. And very centrally located in America. I’ve heard a lot of good things about San Antonio also. I do live in an area with a lot of great stores as well in West county
@@STLPMwe have a cashier at our Natural Grocers that has a brother that lives in St Charles and loves it. I guess it’s the fact that there’s so many areas and choosing the right one. But we’ll be in TX for at least another year or two so have time
South county is nice the Lindbergh area is also nice Sunset has beautiful luxurious homes Fenton has in counties and has three school districts Fenton floods Fenton is Fenton Arnold is in Jefferson County it is cheaper real estate tax it's country it's not St Louis County Melville is okay too Lemay is Lemay Telegraph in Oakville is a logical nightmare when the Meramec River floods I lived in Oakville off of Becker and Telegraph traffic is a nightmare even when the river is not flooded. I'm a native St Louis Man but I'm hundreds of miles away from St Louis now Dexter Lombardo 🤠🧔
Good insight on South County. My mother-in-law lives there. I feel like it is safe and the homes are affordable. But it is just a little too quiet for me. But I love Grants Farm.
@@STLPM yes Oakville is safe and affordable and it's clean My house is on flower Lane the whole subdivision has a theme bees 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Bee Tree Park is nearby When I would come home
At 3:00 in the morning I would see houses with their overhead doors open that blow mind because I'm originally from South St Louis City
St. Louis county area is where to live, not St. Louis city. For sure if you live in St. Louis City and have kids you will be sending them to a private school. Also, you owe it to yourself to research the crime national rating for the city of St. Louis.
Great advice. You are right that most people that live in the city go to private school.
Grew up in Ballwin. Living west of I-170 would be mandatory if I moved back. Probably west of I-270. If you can afford it, Chesterfield would be my pick. The Illinois side is to be avoided although there are some nice small farm towns north of the city. Why anyone would want to live farther in (unless you are a surgeon at Barnes and can afford a gated enclave in CWE) is a mystery.
@@sburns2421 I am in the Ballwin/Manchester area now. I came from Webster Groves. I really love my location because has all the stores I need near by. It is a little farther away from the city but am use to it now.
The Mexican food is as good as Mexico, go to the Cherokee neighborhood.
I actually am on Cherokee weekly. Tacos are my favorite food so I eat lunch there all the time. My kids are starting to love it too.
Welcome to STL, YOU did a nice job as an outsider hitting on the better parts of STL. I work for a company out of LA for three years. There are many differences between California and Missouri mostly weather and cost🎉
Thanks Doug...I love LA for what you said, the Weather. I also like the lifestyle and food in LA. But I DON'T miss the traffic, and housing,/gasoline cost and real estate regulations.
The city of St Louis don't buy a house there unless you work for the city do you work for the city you must live in the city. Wildwood is the best place to live in St Louis I'm originally from St Louis if you are planning to move here don't watch local news they lie about the population they're always showing you pie charts of what's black with white what's what The pie charts are fake it is not 51% black 49% White that's not the truth. It's 10% White at 90% black KMOV CBS affiliate and KDSK NBC affiliate are liars The population now is 294,000 When I abandoned my hometown it was 317, 000 Mayor Tishaura Jones is incompetent the entire city government is incompetent St Louis votes the wrong way every two years That's why I live 450 miles away St Louis St Louis to close to the state of Illinois Dexter Lombardo 🧔🤠
Hey Dexter, according to the stats from Datausa, I have the White population at 44%, Black 44%, and Asian about 3.5 % for t St. Louis City. St. Louis county has a much bigger population at about 1 million people. I have the White population at 63%, Black 24% and Asian at 4.6%. Appreciate your input.
