If he ever walks into frame in S2 of Severance in ANY CONTEXT AT ALL it will be accompanied by (in my head) an orchestral sting and operatic wailing. I will visualise a red bar at the bottom of the screen fading in, centered, indicating 100% HP, with text above and aligned neatly with the left edge of it reading: "JAME THE SUPPLANTER"

    Of course an astute reader will remember that earlier in the narrative Horn demonstrates his ability to do a perfect imitation of Silk. The short scene is then appreciated on another level after finishing Book of The Short Sun. A perfect little Wolfe moment.

    Are you insane? You keep recommending Gene's books, but you haven't said anything about what they're about. Your big reveal is a lousy gip. Gene Wolfe got another chump to talk about him. Too bad the books are crap. Not a mystery and certainly not a story. There's nothing cool about your post, you haven't figured anything out. You're lost and you don't know why, but you think you're close. Have a good trip... to nowhere. Without a plot how do you know if there are any plot holes?

    I was kinda worried you were going to reveal something I totally missed, but luckily, the audiobooks don't include the editor's error. Thankfully, I also managed to pick it up the first time around, and it definitely was a totally mindblowing recontextualization. I actually used a bit of a misnomer there. A long take would be a better phrase. As in, a continuous and unbroken shot in a film. To clarify what I meant, something that is cool and different can lose its lustre when overused. This doesn't mean that it still can't be as mind-blowing and interesting as it originally was when in the hands of a master in their craft; be it filmmaking (Long takes) or writing fiction in general (unreliable narrator).

    An intersting novel note I was told about about the Alliance, and jjust humanity in general by the time of even Rudolph, 150 years before the Alliance fled the empire, Humanity was getting close to some sorta new race, and one of the offshoot gaidens of the OVA mentions a purebred asian being a rarity. So the various names may have little to do with race or ethnicity in the Alliance, Given both he OVA and new DNT anime have two very specifically black guys that seems to indicate the novel had them as black and it wasn't just an animation choice to set the alliance apart from the Empire visually.

  • @DIEGhostfish
    @DIEGhostfish 2 месяца назад

    I mean yeah the Empire does draw a bit from that, Rudolph got his start stopping the awful chaos of a decaying society.... And then decided to kill like 4-8 billion people over genetics. Though apparently in the novels humanity was already basically a blend of whoever survived past nuclear wars before he came to power with very few populations having a distinct race anymore so it was more the purging of the disabled than the racial angle. Not that either's better or worse, killcount is killcount I don't much care how you sort it once you hit those numbers. And that was *On top* of the sterilization, impatient evil bastard couldn't just feed *one* generation.

    I would say that the watch order is pretty widely accepted to be the 2 movies, episodes 3 to 110 then Gaiden. Since the remake isn’t finished there’s no point watching it even if someone would like it more though I personally think the og show is much better. The 2 movies are easily the best way to get into the show. Prequel one should be watched first obviously. There is also another movie called like golden wing or something but that isn’t that good so it’s not suggested you watch it.

    • @DIEGhostfish
      @DIEGhostfish 2 месяца назад

      OH god the prequel movie is an awful entry point. THe annoying thing is Golden Wings has the Destroyer vs Cruiser fight that all the Gaidens keep alluding to. But it's a totally different mechanical designer so you don't get to see the boxy fronted short range destroyer fighting. Honestly some of the Gaidens really feel like they're better watched before the characters they flesh out become relevant in the main show, but either way works.

    Solemn nod to everything you said here about the game - sometimes when you call something out as a "labor of love", you're extending credit against the artists' earnestness in order to excuse a lack of finesse, but here it's a labor of love that produced rarified gold. The care that went into every detail, every tonal choice, the unbelievable technical wizardry behind the custom Northlight engine that allowed for a game that looks like it probably belongs in a future console generation... it's truly a labor of love. The thing that took it from an A+ to a "what even are grades" was the masterful integration of multimedia. The live-action elements and the music so good I'm still playing it on loop were included in ways that just amplified everything. I remember the first time in Parliament Tower where you watch Alice's initial video, standing in front of the projector a bit and seeing some of her projected on Alan's tweed jacket shoulder, just experiencing a jaw drop. Remedy made me feel things with this work of art that I wasn't sure I was still able to feel - and I'm straddling gratitude and anticipation of where they go from here. I feel like they're hitting an exciting stride.

    Definitely look up the words. Because it's quite often impossible to infer from the context alone, not to mention the book is so dense with these words you will often come across multiple new ones in a paragraph. If you want to understand what's going on it's probably a smart idea to google most of them for their meaning in the book of the new sun specifically. The lexicon Urthus isn't necessary, but I got it on my phone after finishing the first book and it was a major help for the rest of the series. Also as someone that loves ereaders and all their great functionality, the dictionary on your kindle likely won't cut it. Many of these words are so obscure and old they aren't in many dictionaries, and the only way to find their meaning is to google them. Even then sometimes they are ultra obscure and not in the immediate results. Which is why the lexicon Urthus is so incredible. I still have to read the Urth of the new Sun. I plan to wait a bit for that and maybe reread the main books of the BOTNS right after

    Great video. Funny story: I grew up in Chile, but my mother is English. In Chile we didn't have access to that many books in English back then, so a few times a year my aunts in Australia would plunder the used bookstores there and send us a big boxful. They knew I loved fantasy and sci-fi, so they would always send a selection for me, but because they couldn't always find all the books in a particular series, I would often end up with a bunch of random books and just have to read them despite missing the other books in the series. In the case of 'The Book of the New Sun', it was 'The Sword of the Lictor'. So I actually read book three in the series twice before getting a copy of the other books years later. It's no surprise that there were many, many things I didn't understand. Now I just reread the whole series. Wasn't sure if I would still like it, but I really enjoyed it. I'm thinking about looking into the other Urth books, but I'm worried about being disappointed like when I started reading the Dune sequels and finally gave up, because I felt he lost the plot. Cheers!

    The lexicon is great. The chapter guide by the same guy is lacklustre. It doesn't actually talk about themes, easter eggs etc it mostly focuses on literary inspirations for characters and things. And I'm pretty sure half of them are just speculation. I mean at times it was outright wrong. In others I discovered major things (like I discovered what I likely inspired the Mirrors of Father Irinire but that one, no one seems to realise or know. See "Kozyrev's mirror"). He's also wrong about who the missionaries are in the garden. He claims it's based on a book character. When it seems to be based on real life 19th century missionary Robert Moffat and his wife Mary who worked a lot with the Zulu. I found this myself suspecting they must have been based on real missionaries (Gene is a Catholic and these two have names from our time, read the Bible and are sitting in a tree hut with a Zulu medicine man) and found those two famous missionaries before I read the guy who wrote the chapter guide claim it's someone else that seems far more of a stretch.. Also wish some of the lexicon descriptions were better and more elaborate.
