I really loved this movie so much and have watched it so many times. It deserves a re-release with quality subtitles for Western audiences. It is an amazing movie and a great anti-war war movie; or at least a realistic war movie from vantage points we rarely want to take.
I love Voina. Saw it about 20 years ago shortly after it was released. It was my first exposure to Russian filmmaking. I've noticed that Russian filmmakers can bring a very different mindset to their films than those crafted in Hollywood for the American market (I'm an American living in the US). Foreign film is a niche market here, regardless of the country of origin. So I can understand your surprise as to the reception of your films in the West. They may not appeal to the majority and are more likely to have a limited release in specialty cinemas (and are widely available for streaming), but they do have a significant audience. Don't forget that Russian films like 'Prisoner of the Mountains' and '12' were both nominated for an Oscar.
I used to remember "Norwegian woods" written by Haruki Murakami, every time I saw this CM. I have imagined that Midori is as the girl in it.
Dobry film zdravím z Czech republik
Guter soldaten.

That was on the shoulders of the road! <-- ending last part i translated from ivankolosnik
Your letters give, I hear the voice of the living. And between the lines of blue handkerchief again stands in front of me. And often accompanies me to fight your face, I feel close with a loving gaze You're always with me. How many treasured handkerchiefs bearing about in overcoats with them! Gentle speech, girlish shoulders Remembering picking campaign in the battle. For them, family, cherished, loved these. Scribbling machine gunner for the blue handkerchief
Good point
Oleg Menchikov is singing i think.
@orhanakay78 Oleg Menchikov, from the movie...I think you just have to get the movie.."Prisoner of the Mountains." Superb film.
What an amazing song.. Anyone else noticed that in the first 20s you see the 2 guys, and after one camera shot you see them again at 0:53 . Nice trick
Love the film, great anti war without portraiting one side as bad. Great song btw
@harrygreb75 It predates the red army, in fact it goes back to the Russo-Japanese war.
@harrygreb75 "Si vis pacem, para bellum."
@baronofcheese The whole point of the song is that by talking about peace, prosperity and avoiding trouble it actually justifies war when it inevitably arrives. When I hear it I feel like picking up my AK and defending the motherland - and I'm not even Russian!
@baronofcheese thanks for the russian lyrics comrade. However this was an official military song and I really doubt it was created to instill 'anti-war' sentiments in their young soldiers. Like most armies you will find that the Red Army really had no use for pacifists.
the song wasn't mad by the communist it was a song for the zhar republic
" The translation of those lyrics seems pretty anti-war to me, plus this is opening stanza of the original song.
Learn russian, bro. That's not original lyrics.
@baronofcheese No its a full bloodied military song - but the lyrics are quite poetic with lots of references to peace and prosperity.
@harrygreb75 Wasn't this originally an anti-war song?
great song in a wonderful movie. Fantastis scenery and what a strong and honest story, I love it how people are portraied as good from their own perspectives and yet there is misery and warcrime.
@HeoCon811 This song is called Farewell of Slavianka (Slavonic lady, so to say) - note this is the "red/Communist" version (there are also "white army" texts available in youtube). Just type Farewell of Slavianka - Red Army Choir - and there you are.
what version is this :(? I wanna get the lyrics from this 1 please please please
this is one of the best films i have ever seen.. such a great message!
Definitely one of the most powerful parts of the movie--and that's saying something.
"Cinij Platochek/Blue Scarf" is the one Slaj keeps whistling throughout the movie--do you mean that one?
about a group of russians abushed by chechens during the first war, 2 of them get taken prisoner by an old chechen man who wants to swap them for his son, in a russian priz camp. the officer is much more interested in escaping, and the younger conscript tries to make friends with his captives. it is based on a story by tolstoy on the caucasian war (in the 1800s) good movie
I didn't know Coca Cola is drugged making the lady so euphoric~
Thank you for sharing. I saw movie in theaters... and countless times on DVS. You capture perfectly.
