Good video.... i have one on getting into hvac on my channel as well
I have an idea to turn a psc motor into a psuedo variable speed motor. It would require 2 relays and a timer. When you get a Y call for cooling, the Low speed tap will be energized for 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, a relay will kill power to relay energizing the Low speed tap and switch it to the normal high speed tap for the remainder of the call for Y. I figure this set up will dehumidify better and also keep the evap coil from freezing by only allowing the Low speed for 2 minutes. Thoughts?
I would think it would work but it's not giving u the full variety speed benefit . The main factor is the true ecm is actual a DC motor which has less energy usage improving efficiency. The use of high and low would help with humidity but personally I would use a variety speed control such as a Fan Handler. They work off of sensors rather than time and can ramp that motor up and down depending on supply air temp both in heating and cooling. Just a thought! I do appreciate the gumption to change things though! I'm always trying to find ways to make things work differently with relays n things. Hope this helps! Be sure to subscribe!
Is this something an HVAC tech would be willing to do ? Seems like 90percent of HVAC companies want to only push new units. It’s disgusting what that industry has turned into. I’m in the Memphis area and it’s shameful. I did manage to install a new Control board after being quoted $1,000.00 by a local HVAC guy. Now there is a flashing code for reverse polarity and I’m nervous about attempting to remedy it myself.

Got quotes of 5 ton Day n Night 14.5 SEER HVAC system, all 3 were Elite Dealers, the $11,000 one has suspended license, 2nd one is licensed and is family business, cut from $16;000 to $12,500, same equipment, 3rd one is licensed and also family run, very honest guy, $9,500, he came with a team of 7 including himself, replaced the system with new condenser, evaporator, gas furnace, Wi-Fi thermostat, same model number and equipment as the other two, did all the details as stated on other 2 quotes in less than 3 hours, very efficient, very clean, the system is running perfectly., he registered the system for warranty right away, I got the warranty certificates via email the same night. This is in LA, you need to do lots of research and get many quotes.
I keep my water heater OFF except when i take a shower. saves $20-25/month.
I've been in my new place for a year. I spent a few months planning. I replaced the 20+ year old A/C+furnace with a cold climate heat pump. I replaced the original aluminum clad windows and sliding doors with new Andersen ones. That alone cut the heating used by 70%! I had the loose blown attic insulation removed and added 4 inches of closed cell spray foam changing the attic to conditioned space. I changed the old gas hot water tank with a instant electric hot water unit. The attic doesn't warmer than 90 even in Arizona summers. In the past winter, it was reaching 100 in February. I updated all the electrical to meet the 2017 NEC or later swapping out every switch and receptacle. And this before I install a solar+battery system.
and how much did you spend on all that to save 80 bucks a month lol.
A lot. But the savings are a lot more than $80 per month. My summer electric bill is 75% less than my neighbors. No more gas bills. And I didn't even mention getting rid of the old bathtub surround and replacing it with a shower stall. Changing the attic to conditioned was important since that's where the indoor air handler lives.

Improvements can always be beneficial. Your case doesn't seem too major to me but like I said. It's always beneficial. Every house and every area is different.
Calibrate / Adjust your hygrometer with a saturated-salt test in a ziploc: kosher salt in a dish with a bit of water in it, put it in a ziploc, put your hygrometer in that bag, 24 hours later, it should read 75.0%, if not, adjust your hygrometer; of that hygrometer can not be adjusted to match 75%, discard it.
For nostril/sinus dryness/bleeds : put some olive oil on a Q-Tip .. and you know what to do next, I am sure.

What is a reasonable price for new duct work? 10 runs (10ft-30ft each). 2000 sq ft ranch, single story, AC in attic center of the home.
Every area is a different price and also depends on the contractor. Would depend on what type of duct they put in and if it's a union company or not. Unions always higher. There is no one to give an answer to that unless they came out to the house and quoted it

No problem with your video. Not ideal, but I have a wall mounted propane heater, when Power goes out. Hopeully the electricity outage is only a few hours, but we once had a 8 day outage. I think it was a city-wide iced up overhead lines being broken.
With a cold climate style heatpump, if it is sized to be able to handle the entire heating load, a second source of heat is technically not required -> but for central ducted system, size is limited by existing air ducts. It still is a very bad idea to install a heatpump in a cold climate without a second source of heat in case of breakdowns and extra-cold weather. Dual fuel ducted is one of if not the best heating system types out there.
My perspective and a commercial HVAC pro. Mini splits are expensive and have high failure rates. Their repair parts are OEM specific, and therefore cost much more. Heat pumps run most of the year instead of just half of the year for a straight cooling unit, so the service life of a heat pump is nearly half of a straight cool unit. The discharge air temp of a heat pump is much cooler than a gas furnace, and many people find that to be a drawback, often feeling a cool breeze in winter as the air heats the space. If you must have a heat pump, it should be a conventional split with a dual fuel setup, using gas or oil for the heat during the defrost cycle or for supplemental heat. Best case: gas heat with straight cool.

This is simple-understand your interest and hvac company are not aligned. They live and breathe swap outs. Until you are paying more to recharge a system refrigerant than he calls cost for a new system, you don’t need to swap out. Fully variable heat pump costs at least 10,000. Installed. You can earn at least $500 interest on that jn a cd every year. That buys you easily 1-2 recharges per year !!
Increasing the wotking voltage of a capacitor is always a good idea as long as it fits in the allotted space. Going from 370AC to 440AC ( or higher) provides more overhead against failure of the dielectric due to arching. A common failure in all capacitor types ;especially electrolytics .. IMHO.
Thanks for sharing your video. I changed my capacitor a week ago, and have bought an extra in case it goes out again in the future. Do capacitors go stale or deteriorate when stored on a shelf for 5-6 years?
I recently had a 'soft start' kit put on my 3 ton Amana central air conditioner. I have heard the term 'soft start" and "hard start". What is the difference? I did notice my Generac 20kw natural gas generator squatted when the air conditioner came on. My HVAC company put the "soft start" kit on it and now when the Generac generator cycles there is a slight sound of the Generac engine but nothing like it was before the kit was installed.
They are typically the same thing. It is a start cap and potential relay. They soften the start by lowering starting amps. You should def have one if you have a genny of any sorts. It’s easier on both the ac and the generator. They have been called start cap kits, hard starts, soft starts, easy starts, kickstarts. They all do the same thing and most are identical. Where I’m from, most call them kick starts but I have traditionally called them hard starts. It was a great add on in my opinion when they added it to yours. Hard starters actually increase the start-up current giving the compressors a harder and louder kick at each start,.Thus extending the life of a failing compressor. A soft starter significantly reduces the start-up current making a softer and quieter.
Please which school do you recommend. Though I’m in Cameroon, I just started with this course in the university. But I intend taking it higher and I’m confused on which school I should get in to
Personally, I would not worry as much about the school. Obviously want a decent one but I can't say that I know any in that area. There are technical institutes in just about every state. At least a couple of them. As long as it's a good reputable one, because the trade schools just to get you started. It's for some of the theory. You won't learn a lot of the things you need to learn until you get out and do it Hands-On. If you're looking for engineering or something along those lines, I would look up in your area with the best engineering schools are. Because even an HVAC engineering degree is a degree in engineering, just with a focus of HVAC. I know this is not exactly what you were looking to hear, but I hope that this helps a little.
