There is no way in hell anyone would catch a fleeting glimpse of Red Drawf and think it's a rip off of TNG.

I never realised until now that TNG predated RD by a year. Maybe it’s the utilised budget or something that influenced a more personal Mandela Effect-like thing, but I thought Red Dwarf hit the TV screens before TNG. And I was in my tweens at the time of both of their first airings; ten yo for TNG, specific.

And then I started laughing. Like a human. What is up fellow humans?

Ironically Star Trek ended up ripping off red dwarf ( the episode thanks for the memory s2e3…. I’m not sure which Star Trek TNG ep not a big fan but I know it happened)

There is a video of Stewart doing a rather ragged version of Rimmer’s salute. The local PBS station got the series only a few months after it started on BBC2. I didn’t see the first episode “The End” when I first came across it and didn’t get it, but a few months later they played it again, I got the premise from the start, and it has been my favourite sci-fi, right down to declaring blue alerts. Imagine Picard having to tell Worf to not be a smeghead about something.

Not sure I see the similarities myself. It's like comparing Blake's 7 to the original star Trek. Also Red Dwarf started airing I'm the UK around the same time next generation was airing in the US so it's almost certainly just a coincidence.

"Red Dwarf" was DEFINITELY not a knock off of "Star Trek." It's sort of an "Odd Couple" in space with Rimmer and Lister and there was no real "crew" as all of them had died. Also, the show premised that there was no life outside of Earth. Sure, they come across some strange creatures like the GELFs (Genetically Engineered Life Form) but they all had their origins from Earth. So no Vulcans, no alien life forms. Even in deep space, everything came from Earth.
