Seven armatures for seven generators
I bought seven armatures for Harley Model 65A and 65B 12-volt generators. The 22-dollar part was better than I expected. The 112-dollar armature was worse than I expected. I bought two armatures from Amazon that were nearly identical. One was 5 dollars more, but was shipped and sold by Amazon. The more expensive one had no splatter on the shaft, no sealant on the laminations, and a hardness testing dimple on the end of the shaft. Since I have to return the cheaper armature, I may have to pay shipping, even though it was defective. The 112-dollar defective armature I bought on eBay made returning a snap. Request, get a free USPS label, and set it out front to be picked up by the mail perso...

Sportster 65B generator rebuild 1982-84
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.3 года назад
[See "Mistakes" below] Harley switched from the Prestolite to a Hitachi generator in 1982. It has more output, 13 Amps, vs 10 Amps, and the output comes on a lower speed. In this rebuild, I go in thinking I had a bad armature, when it was just a corroded brush holder. I fixed if for the price of two lock-washers. A very good day. I go over the NOS armatures available on the internet, and my goo...

I dig out a couple dozen Harley 12-volt generators and my home-brew generator test rig, to see how much of this old iron actually works. Most did, a few did not. The nicest surprise was seeing how well the Hitachi generators worked. They start up at lower RPMs, seem smoother and quieter, and are supposed to have higher output. Iron Sportster ignition systems

An overview of the ignition systems on Iron Sportsters and K-Models from 1952 to 1985. I state that you can put the 1980-85 module on 1971-1979 bikes, but the modern module might not work when you kickstart the bike. In 1980 and later, there was no kick-starter on the engine. Biggest problem with mechanical points are the advance flyweights egging out at the pivot and hitting the back of the po...

    Hey on your video iron sportster transmission part one.... Where did you get that mock up stand/ display stand that your using?! Do they make something like this you can bolt your trap door into so you could do all your gear spacing, endplay measuring and adjusting without having to use your engine? It's a pain trying to measure endplay having to try to hook it up into a vice or having to install it and remove it from your engine, and would rather have a jig I could have on my table top.l

    Afternoon Paul - some time ago I asked if I could use some of your pictures in my videos (from your website), you were kind enough to agree - and very nicely too, thank you. I was planning on using a 1:22 section of this video 'cos the ignition bits are complicated between 1978-1980 on Sportsters. Your video shows all the greasy bits, and you even explain how they work, which will help in my next Sportster history video. I will obviously credit you properly, as I always do. Thanks again sir. Cheers, Chris

    Want to test my 76' Sportster generator. Have the shop manual. Borrowed a old Snap-On DC volt/ Amp analog 30 amp tester. Want to test amperage. One lead on meter says Amps-Reg and the other Amps-Bat. Which one is positive?

    • @Open-Sport
      @Open-Sport Год назад

      Those both sound like the positive-- the connections for the current meter which you connect between the output terminal of the voltage regulator and the battery plus terminal. The ground might be the case of the meter. If it is just an amp-meter, there is no ground-- just the two wires so the meter replaces the wire from the regulator to the battery.
