A 30 Year Old Fantastic Voyage
In 1994, a rap song was released by an artist with a very unique look, but he had a hit with this song. A fun, infectious and upbeat sound masked the lyrics of reality tinged with hope of taking a fantastic voyage to a new place. #harmannymusiceducation #coolio #fantasticvoyage #slideslideslippetyslide

Science Brings About a Punk Song
Просмотров 221 день назад
A 30 year old punk song's repetitive lyric was inspired by science. Always an interesting thing to look at how lyrics are created. But this song brought stardom to this band and they're still doing it today! #harmannymusiceducation #keepemseparated #comeoutandplay #theoffspring #dexterholland #science

In 1987, the United States Congress declared one march by John Philip Sousa to be the National March of the United States. Which one? Well, you may not know it by name, but you know it when you hear it. It's got a very interesting backstory to it. ARE YOU KIDDING ME JACOB COLLIER?????
Stevie truly is one of the greatest musicians ever. I imagine that no other artist has had as much influence on modern music.
I could see an argument for Michael Jackson's influence, but I could also see the argument that Michael was influenced by Stevie as well.
My thoughts exactly. I saw him in Bristol, England and it was something else. I've never seen anything like it and don't think I ever will.
Can’t say I’m wrapped in all his songs, but at 29 years old he is a breath of fresh air. Enjoyed your clip thanks for the feedback, I hope I get the opportunity to see him live one day. 😉
Thank you! It was definitely worth going! An absolutely amazing experience!
I like piano because it's physically producing the sound, not influenced by a programmer. Keyboards are great too though...at least that was my original though, but piano technicians do have a lot of influence on the way pianos react to the player. I guess I just think that physically produced sounds are cool. It's great for students to be able to explore different sounds too. For adolescent students, there are a lot of free VSTs to explore, although I'd be concerned that they could be sucked into the commercial aspects of music software, and be led to thinking they need to buy all kinds of software.
Great points! I started on piano at age 5. The piano I teach on (behind me in the video) was at my paternal grandparents' house until I was in 3rd grade when they gave it to me. Keyboards were too expensive, so I never had one until I bought one as an adult. When my daughters were little it was so beneficial to have the keyboard, so I could practice, compose and more while they were sleeping. I don't think it can always be black or white, but definitely an either/or depending on situation and circumstance.
Yes, music is such connector. Thanks for sharing your reflections. Thinking of you as you remember your sister.
Thank you very much!
Fun to hear your throughts on Rhythm! Love that song, "I've Got Rhythm", so good!
I watched that 2-hour logic session, it's instructive and funny and mindboggling and so worth it.
I like your shirt - music indeed is mathematics. I can remember »discovering« the 12th root of 2 in the chromatic scale when programming music for a 1980s three-channel 8-bit sound chip. Back then as a teenager I honestly thought, just for a few seconds: »wow, I'm the first one making that connection«. Of course, I've only been standing on the shoulders of giants. Then, musicians like Jacob come along and prove that grooves don't need to be quantized and, sometimes, notes don't need to be tuned perfectly - quite the opposite. But yeah, I still appreciate the intersection of mathematics and music today as a fifty year old as I did back then. Subscribed & cheers!
Thanks so much! The rest of the shirt says “with feelings.
Sorry, but your audio is not up to the subject!
What's wrong with the audio?
Aside from a couple of the singles he released A Rock Somewhere and Cinnamon Crush are my favorites. A Rock Somewhere is just all around amazing. It's musically engrossing and the lyrics are so powerful.
My favourites: Over You, Wherever I Go ❤
Excellent album ❤
He was ambicious to win album of the year.
He's an unprecedented genius of modern music but that doesn't put him past being analyzed. June Lee has been doing it from the start but Jacob does a fair amount of it himself not just in his Logic X sessions but in the lectures. If people want to see a more impressive example of microtonal and key center shifts then try out Moon River. See link below which also requires some music theory knowledge. Bridge Over is a great song to start and this arrangement and bravura voices are a brilliant but it's not even the most interesting or innovative song on the album which was clearly aimed at as wide an international audience as possible. It includes Latino, K-Pop, British and Indian stars as well as Lawrence who I guess is American Gen Z and pretty awesome in their own right. You should check them and saje out out as well for tight harmonies. ruclips.net/video/UTDHylJZMXU/видео.html
Wow, great review. Little Blue is my favorite, with about 3 or 4 of the other songs a close second. What a magnificent album. Love how after listening to Jacob there is a feeling that, no matter what is happening, you will be alright (just my thoughts) … take care and thanks for your observations 👍
You’re very welcome. I’ve been excited for this album to come out and I was totally blown away at how great it was.
Summer rain
Her runs aren't showy. She is giving life to specific runs Jacob asked her to do by singing it for her first💖
Agreed!
That is a huge project! Wowzers! What dedication and commitment to see that through to completion!
Ah, 6:00 that song is so soothing and hopeful!
14:00 LOVE this one too! On repeat!
There's so many!!!
I hope his music becomes more popular! It’s too good! 🎉
His Djesse project was so ambitious and diverse.....and I really think this final album in that project is going to get him in the ears of more people! At least I'm going to try to get it out there!! :-)
Jacob is one of the top arrangers I've ever heard. His hearing is unmatched. His vocal harmony stacks are mind boggling. But his songwriting? Meh....
It's insane! It's something we've never heard before. How lucky are we to be living in this era listening to Jacob.
Totally right. I think it would be something similar to when a new composer came along in what we now call a new musical era. It seemed odd and out of place to the ear, but grew to become normalized over time.
It's mind-blowing stuff! 🤯 I can't wait for Volume 4 to drop. 😍🌟
drops tonight 🤩
I'll have a reaction video tomorrow!
100%
Great recording volume for this one! And YES he's a truly gifted musical mind!
Thanks!
That Eb a full minor 7th higher than I can sing in falsetto 😅 There's a behind the scenes clip at the end of the song Lonely Town by Vulfpeck where Theo Katzman BARELY squeaks out a B6 and his upper range is insanely huge... Personally, I kinda doubt this was unpitched, but I guess anything is possible...
Theo's an insane vocalist. And the fact that he can drum AND sing.....that totally blows me away. Jacob's voice is out of this world.
Fabulous vocals from Tori in this piece - truly incredible!
Your mic is quite quiet in this video, but thankfully the content still rock solid so I could toggle back and forth!
SUCH an incredible track as a whole and I adore the contrast between vocalists too!
03:46 RIGHT? SO good!
YES!!! There will be another video coming up with another breakdown!! :-)
The video of Jacob walking Tori through her part section by section and she says she's never worked like that is amazing to watch!
If there was an award for being the most insanely gifted musician but unable to translate that talent into halfway decent music, I don't know who else would be able to compete.
I'm guessing you're not a fan of Jacob Collier's music?
Interesting comment. I think you’re onto something but style is part of what all genius level composers catered to. His just isn’t your thing.
first define what is to you "decent music", so we can understand what you mean better
@@dyrion I think you know exactly what I mean.
Alright everyone, pack your bags and quit making music because this guy's armchair opinion in the RUclips comment section matters apparently. If @jcarleezy doesn't find think it's halfway decent then it's not worth making!
Tnx for this!!!
You're welcome!
Ahhh, thanks for introducing this to me. I adore Jacob's work and this collab is FIRE. It really is a special song and I think I need to dive into the keyboard with it today!!!!
Listened to it today and it's EPIC. Thanks for the recommend!
I know I might get in trouble with some people, but I really believe this is the best version of the song. Even better than Simon and Garfunkel.
Oh, I am so curious! Great video hook.
YES! I love Yebba's version!
Such a pure vocal with wild, clean flexibility and an effortless tone. Lovely.
I assume the highest notes are pitch shifted. He's done that before, blatantly in Time Alone With You, but also with a subtlety comparable to this in Christmas Song. I think he's said that approximately the highest he can sing is a B5. Whatever he did here is very effective, in any case.
It sounds like it could be altered. But still, the overall range is crazy. I’ll be diving into more in future videos.
Maybe you're right, but I think this time he sang every note without pitch shifting. So the song is a choral piece. Yesterday I watched the Logic Session live and he pointed out, that this was very high for him (also during some analytics of the bass section he said once that that was very low for him). I think he would tell if he'd used technology to modify these notes. His voice is getting better and better as time goes by. I'm sure he's consciously training to get these results. So he has even less boundaries and can be more playful. :)
@@agnespethes I saw that he released a Logic Session video and I will take a look at it. I'm looking forward to his insights on making the song.
There's a video out of him walking Tori through each of her parts, coaching her on it as she sings each so perhaps that will reveal the particular part.
@@brianmi40 I'll be using that in my breakdown of Tori's vocals on Tuesday!
Amazing, right?? Tori Kelly and John Legend...and don't forget Yebba (Abbey Smith) who sings the first verse. If you haven't seen the post on Jacob's community page, he wrote: "This version DOES include Yebba’s original rendition :) however, Yebba has requested not to be featured in the song title, given that she did not contribute something new."
Yes! Thank you. I did read about Yebba. It's all fantastic. And there will be many more breakdowns of this song as I dive deeper into the layers!

Great fun facts! I notice your audio is pretty quiet - I keep having that happen too!
Interesting! I'll have to look into that. Thanks!
Awesome! yes, I just noticed I needed to put this video on max volume and then it was totally fine! I had that happen to me as well. @@harmannymusiceducation

Oh wow! I had no idea this was requested for a funeral! I'd not thought of adding this to my funeral repertoire binder. ;)
It was Joplin's request and his wife said it wasn't a funeral song.

UGH!!! The last 5 minutes my video randomly froze! I don't know why that happened, but at least there was no echo like last week!
?
What is the question?
Sorry about the echo! There was a setting I didn't change, so there's an echo throughout the video! Hopefully it won't be too distracting and I'll make sure it's normal next week!
Great topic and reminders for families investing in music education. Congrats on 22 years of music education! I love how you dive into the 'how' of practice in this video as well - so essential and great reminders along the journey!
Thank you so much!!
Yes, I have heard of him. 😊
Excellent!!
Very good analysis. Anyone who says they like a song has made a connection in one of the ways you describe either subconsciously or intentional. The same may be why they dislike a song. Thanks for the great info as always!
Thanks, my friend! Appreciate your input and your support!
Thanks!
