Remote canyon full of chukar! - Boatin' For Chuks - Season Five Episode IV
We were invited out for a boat in Chukar hunt. The landscape was breathtaking, but overwhelming. We chose a random canyon to park the boat and almost immediately got into birds. After putting some birds in the bag, we headed for home to make Japanese fried chukar with my friend Satomi. It's a simple recipe. I hope you can learn to make it too! Enjoy the video.

Welcome back to another one everybody! On opening day of partridge and quail here in Idaho, I went out to a spot that I knew held all three birds I wanted. We ended up getting into the quail immediately. After having some fun with them in the creek bottom, we headed up into the hills for chukar before it got too hot. We ended up shooting our first limit of chukar before hiking back out. I hope ...

Welcome to season five! Thanks everyone for taking the time to watch my videos. It really means a lot to me to see that people enjoy them. It's just Dizzy and I for now. We spent a lot of time in the grouse woods this September. The thick leafy cover makes shooting on the wing difficult. Dizzy has become pretty good at hunting these birds though and we've managed to put a bunch in the bag. Thes...

I headed out into the hills with my new shotgun in hand. A Benelli Montefeltro Silver Featherweight in twelve gauge. I see it to be the ideal partridge gun for its light weight and the ability to have at least three shots. What I didn't know is that this hunt would be a turning point for my young dog Dizzy. Her confidence building, she would begin to range. When she ranges she finds birds and s...

Columbian Sharp-tailed Grouse Hunting - with Andy Wayment - Season IV Episode VI

In early October we were invited to hunt sharp-tailed grouse with author Andrew Wayment. For the first stop we hunted some land that the Oregon Trail once passed through. Thin cover and excited dogs left us with nothing in the bag at the first spot. So we headed to one of the most beautiful pieces of ground that I've had the pleasure to hunt. Unfortunately, none of the audio was captured, but t...

The chukar eluded us, but the quail didn't! - Late Season Mountain Bird Hunt
I’d really like to have conversation with you guys. Haven’t done this yet (I’m 73+) and most videos have been very discouraging because of the obviously treacherous terrain. But this one looks quite a bit different! Maybe there’s hope for me yet. I have two Brittanies that love to go to Montana with me for sharps, Huns, and roosters every October for the last 9 years. We stay in the Northern tier of counties and have never seen a snake, and the old Vet in town says they only hear about them near the Missouri River. Are snakes a problem there or is it just that Winter puts them in their dens?
I just took my 69 year old Dad chukar hunting last week. You can do it! There’s definitely some relatively flat walks to be had, but people who find those places hold them close to their vest for obvious reasons. In regards to the snakes, they are out until November or so in most of the Northwest. We hunt while they are out and it’s an accepted risk. I snake train my dogs and try to always be within 3 hours of a vet with anti-venom.
12 ga? What choke you are using?
Yes 12 gauge with improved cylinder shooting 2 & 3/4 7.5 shot.
Great dog work. Awesome hunting. Greetings from Mexico.
Thank you for watching! Glad you enjoyed the dog work.
Great video!
@@jacobrotter6826 thanks Jacob!
Terrific episode. Thanks for sharing.
@@RandallVoorhees thanks for watching!
Great job! Love the dog work & the love you show towards the sport. What choke are you using on this hunt? 💥🐦♥️
Thank you! I was using improved cylinder.
Great...Now I'm hungry and jealous of your mountains!! Great Vid Rob!
Come on up!

Great hunt. Did you see the bunny at 07:55 ?
I did not!
Nice hunt Rob. Dizzy did her job and you did yours👍

That dog is better than average. I'm glad i have 7 sunburst dogs. I need a boat to take all them in.
@@Chukartramp that’s a lot of dogs. You’re gonna need a big boat.
@NorthwestWingshooters bigger than average?
@Chukartramp hai sensei!
Beautiful country! I am curious what’s your Pups paw-pad routine. That lava rock is no joke.
The idea is to keep them conditioned. Their pads are like calluses. During the off season they follow me behind my mountain bike which is great exercise for both of us, but also keeps that pad material thick. Lately I’ve run into the problem of her grinding through her nails down to the quick. Occasionally cuts still happen. I carry and use Ultra Paws for boots as needed.
Beautiful area to hunt in!
Yes it is.
What a hunt you have an amazing dog and you are a good shooter i enjoyed the video very much keep them coming It will be nice if you tell me what choke you used in this trip and what shells I appreciate it
Thank you for the kind words and for watching. I was using an improved cylinder choke shooting Federal Upland Steel 12 gauge 2&3/4 7.5 shot size.
Very much enjoyed this.
Glad you did!
Great light, really shows the strange beauty of those breaks.
It’s helpful to have distractingly beautiful scenery while chukar hunting.
@@NorthwestWingshootershaha, it never hurt...for me, some excuse to stop and get a little breather. Chasing after a good Brit, and finding some birds... enjoy it! Good shooting BTW, wish I would have had the dog tracker system when I was your age, let's the dog do their job, and you know when to speed up.😊
@@weinerdog137 I don’t know what you guys did without GPS! 😱
Cool video Rob. That looked like a fun trip. One day I hope to hunt there. Maybe next year. And the cooking looks good. We deep fried ours last week and man it was good also. Thanks for sharing
It is a special place!
Great hunt, I gotta do this soon before I get too old. It was great seeing this cooked Japanese style, I really like Japanese food. I've been to Japan about a dozen times.
I’m glad you enjoyed that part. I too love Japan, its food and its people.
Brittany power ! Are those Idaho or Oregon chucks
Team brittany!!!
Wonderful hunt!!!! Dizzy is a DANDY!!!! I cant get enough of Brits!!!! I have owned them all my life,Im 79.
Lungs hurt just watching you climb.
Chukar is a hard earned bird.
What an outstanding hunt! Dizzy is a full blown ROCKSTAR! WOW!
I’m lucky to have her.
You're very fortunate to have a dog like Dizzy to hunt behind, but I've gotta say, she's a lucky dog to have you shooting what she points. You're a way better, more natural wingshooter than I ever was (I was pretty mediocre on Chukars). I was lucky to have a GSP that loved to point and didn't get upset when I missed. That's not to say he wasn't a good retriever, he just didn't get his nose out of joint when I let him down.😉
Thanks for the kind words. I wouldn’t call myself a natural. I just hunt A LOT. Practice makes perfect. I’m lucky to have a work schedule that allows it.
Great hunt man beautiful country
Thank you and thanks for watching!
3M Peltor EEP-100 with the “skull screw” foams. 30+ decibel reduction, allows you to hear conversation and they’re directional so you can tell what direction the bird is flushing.
Thanks for the input!
Love it man great job. Save some for us. LOL
There’s still plenty out there!
Acts like my flashie!
Sounds like a good dog. 😊
Dizzy pointing voice how do you do that
There’s a setting on my GPS system (Dogtra Pathfinder 2) where you can set the alert message to whatever you’ve named the collar.
Wow way cool!!! Thanks love your videos
What collar tells you (dog on point that way cool)

This emotional terrorism, man. Loved watching Cooper over the years. Dogs are one of God’s greatest gifts and heartbreaks all at the same time. My 3.5yo lab is still in her teenage years as a hunting partner, but I know those years go by fast. I would be so lucky to have her be as a good a dog as Cooper.
Thank you for the kind words. Enjoy your pup!
Whatever that bush is it makes for fantastic valley quail hunting. We had that same bush down here on my last quail hunt and they hold great in it. Although I did have a barely injured one that used the brush to make a fool of my dog and I trying to retrieve on a steep hillside. 😭
@@TheRoamingHazard yeah it’s very pokey and thick. Not sure what it is.

Just wondering what state this quail hunt was in? I absolutely love your pups. Cooper was a great Britt and Diy right there with him. Lucky man you are sir!
Thanks for the kind words! Respectfully I’m trying to move away from even calling out the state in my videos. My intent is not to draw attention to a place, rather share for entertainment purposes. Please reach out on Instagram or Facebook if you’d like to chat.
@@NorthwestWingshooters Understood. Keep up the great work.
Dizzy is a beast!
She's got quail figured out that's for sure!
I use axil xcor. You can turn on sound or leave it off if you don’t need to hear like target practice.
Xcor pro
Okay thank you! I will look into those.
Nice video, thanks for sharing! Those quail sure do hold tight.
When you get them split up like that it makes for a lot of fun.
As many Quail that I kill I have to miss 50 to bag a limit. " The Devil birds " is what I call them. Good thing my dogs don't keep score on my misses vs their points!
It helps to have the right cover and tight holding birds.
Dizzy's canal retrieve was stellar! She knew it was there and didn't give up!
I was thankful for her persistence.
That triple in the intro...
😮💨
I would love to hunt with you! Although the hiking may kill my old self!
Haha thanks for watching. The fact that you feel that way makes me feel like I must be doing something right!
Was that a mud hen at 5:37? 🤣
I stepped on a frog! 🐸 In all seriousness I think it's a glitch in the audio track. Bonus points if you can find the other one!

@ what are you running for a gun? Make, model, gauge?
@@HUNT24-7 for this hunt I was using my Benelli Montefeltro Silver Featherweight in 12 gauge.
@ very nice! Love my Benelli’s!
Chuckar don’t run downhill
Not typically, but these were! I saw it with my own eyes. 👀
Taz, my GSP used to point them, but he very seldom got quilled. Once though, I swear he jumped in front of me, when I almost stepped on the porcupine he was pointing. He took a shoulder full of quills that day, but kept me from getting hurt.
Sounds like he was a great dog.
Another great hunt & video Rob👍 Always enjoy your narrative and of course the dog work. Wondering which gps device you use?
Thanks, I’m using the Dogtra Pathfinder 2.
Great dog Rob! I hate those dang things more than rattlesnakes.
Ive had several Brits, and hunted Washington State...one of them seemed to DESPISE porkys. Sunday vet bills are at least double.
I had a Lab that was that way. She never seemed to learn. Other than that, she was a bird hunting machine.
I've never found a porcupine but my chocolate dog learned not to mess with rattlesnakes after he got bit in the face@@ricksmith2134
