Sakura Watch May 10, 2024 - Ep 13 - Fugenzo blossoms, and more, are in full bloom in High Park. You may be wondering if the cherry blossoms have fallen, why one more update? Well, did you know there’s another variety of Japanese cherry blossom that blooms later? Located at the bottom of Cherry Hill, you can find Fugenzo trees, which are another type of Japanese cherry blossoms. These tend to bloom a week or two after the better known Yoshino cherry blossoms have fallen.
These blossoms are actually much larger, and much more fluffier and puffier-almost like a carnation in its size and shape. But that helps that last a lot longer, so once these bloom, they can stick around for a couple week...

Weather depending, they should last at least another week or so, possibly to the last week of May

Do you think there will still be some blooms on May 3rd?
If you haven't seen it yet, I posted an update from my May 3 visit a few hours ago - still some to see, but definitely not a full bloom
I was wondering would there still be any on Wednesday May 1st?
With each rainy day, more petals will get knocked down. By Wednesday I'm estimating the trees will still have some blossoms - maybe 50% or less - but won't look like full blooming trees anymore.

Do you think it is still Ok to visit tommorow (Monday 29th)? I wonder if a lot of petals in the tree? Sadly I was unable to come until now since I got sick.
The rain this weekend is sure to have knocked down some petals, but there should still be a decent amount on the trees. They many not look as full as peak bloom from earlier in the week, but still may have about 60-75% with some good ones around Cherry Hill or down by the docks and Grenadier Pond. 🌸

Would the blooms be available by the end of April?
It will depend on the weather, but as long as conditions are not too windy or rainy over the coming week, there should be some blossoms to see by the last weekend of April - just how much I can't say for sure, but I will know more later this week when I see how they fair. 🌸

Yes I do! As well as many robins, red-winged black birds and many other birds and wildlife - its one of the many joys when visiting the park. 🌸

There are 6 stages - so the next stage is the final stage when the blossoms open up 🌸 which should be this weekend and into next week

The Sakura trees in Robarts Library in U of T already started to bloom
Yes I saw that too! They are usually the first trees to bloom in the city, which means High Park is just 2-3 days behind. 🌸
Chaplain near Bathurst, south of Eglinton used to be lined with cherry trees- but they've mostly all died over the past 25 yrs & never replaced.😢

What’s your prediction for the bloom date?
Exact dates are still dependent on weather and once the buds move into the next stage at least, but I'm still predicting second half of April - so sometime between April 15-25.

The trees survived as the snow and cold was short lived. New post for March 27 shows the buds continue to develop so things look good!
