THE AVENGERS | A Case of Interrogation | part two
PART TWO = Episodes 4 - 7 | CLASSIC SPY RADIO DRAMA |
This production of The Avengers burst in the door of spy and super-hero adventure drama on South African radio in 1971, starring Donald Monat as John Steed, and Diane Appleby as the wonderful Emma Peel. It was based on the fine TV series, which was very popular from the start in the UK, and is an excellent example of radio's adaptation of the television medium. Part pop art, part super hero, and part adventure serial . . this radio show had all of the excitement and intelligence of the original television hit.

A Pail of Air was actually one of my favorite adaptations, though I don't remember reading Lieber's original story, so I don't know what liberties were taken, if any. Having the boy narrate the story, rather than the father, provides an interesting point of view. Since Bud knows nothing of the world before the disaster, he has no basis for recognizing how that world is so different from what he has always known, and that colors his attempt to understand what is happening now. It's an interesting approach to bring across this terrifying new world. The only thing that really irritated me was "Sis's" proto-valley girl attitude. The boy has no understanding of the world beforehand - so why is SHE such an embodiment of a 50s "I care nothing, I love my hair and clothes" depiction of girls on radio and TV of the time? In the 1960s movie adaptation of The Time Machine, Weena has an odd obsession out of nowhere near the end of the film, asking how girls' hairstyles looked in the Time Traveler's time, but, of course, what is depicted is a 1960s style, not an 1899 style. It was the one jarring moment I had with the movie, and it's the same jarring moment writ large in this episode. SIs has no real part in the development of the story except to act scared when the Nest is discovered. They could have removed her character completely, and the story would have been far stronger. But even with her character, A Pail of Air works well with X Minus One's real strength of creating a unique world and building on it. Lulungameena and the Bradbury adaptations are also good examples of that.

Skulking Permit was my favorite of the X Minus One comedies. Robert Sheckley was totally insane, wasn't he? 🤣🤣 The idea of these guys trying to create a typical small town environment without any clue what that entails is glorious. And, of course, this all symbolized everyone's fears in the 1950s. I love the rationalizations the Mayor kept making to justify his decisions, and then kinda to escape the consequences of those decisions. "Now wait, Tom! You can't murder me! I'm not the Mayor anymore! I'm now a General! And murdering a General is MUTINY!" Wendell Holmes as the Mayor/General is a little panicky in a couple of places, and he shouldn't be. No one should have a clue what the consequences of murder are, and so no one should have any fear about BEING murdered. But that's a minor point. The only weird thing here is that there are no females in the main cast, though considering how the Mayor was interpreting how your typical small town should be, maybe that's all for the best. 😂 And I always enjoyed the music soundtrack on X Minus One, especially from this episode. I ripped a lot of the music a while back for my mp3 player. The music is so much fun.

Definitely one of the weirder episodes on X Minus One. The solution to the problem is ... getting drunk as a skunk. But it's a lot of fun regardless. It's another Simak story focusing on the character of "Bat Ears Brady," and I really don't want to know how he got THAT nickname! Still, it's an interesting character, and he keeps you interested in the story. But there is no way this would get on the air today.

I've been studying my favorite and greatest president ever Abraham Lincoln for years, I have read many books, watched many movies and have immersed myself in the history of this man, and I'm telling you this is very authentic, this is almost exactly what happened when the Insurrection started, this is very well done. The only thing Orson Welles got wrong is Abraham Lincoln had a high squeaky voice. But the ethos of Abraham lincoln, the soul of Abraham Lincoln, he channeled Abe.

I have immersed myself in Abraham Lincoln history for years, I have read and listen to so many audiobooks, watch movies on this guy, I've even memorized the Gettysburg address and did a video and put it online, because I'm toying with the idea of being an Abraham Lincoln impersonator this year at the Civil War Fort Parks here in dc, and down by the Lincoln Memorial, and this is spot on, he is channeling Abraham Lincoln. I'm really enjoying this.
