Let Me Tell You About Sebastian: Alcoholism and The Big Lies
This is a video about the big lies we tell in alcoholism. Not the small, common ones that everyone knows, but the giant, pointless, grandiose ones. Because I've seen it first hand, and that led me to realise that I was doing it too.

    These people are very wrong. Your stories actually remind me of how damaging alcohol is and the damage it has caused. I tell addiction horror stories to people and it helps process things when they're vocalized. We need people like yourself, who allow themselves to be vulnerable, to tell these stories. It helps countless people and reminds them they're not alone in their struggles and trauma. It also helps you and it is clear it does. I also think that the way you present your videos and tell your stories reaches a broader audience that aren't in the sober community. I think that people have this misconception, that if you present or discuss terrible things more "artistically " you are therefore "romanticizing" or "glorifying" these topics. I believe this to be very wrong and dumb. More people being aware of addiction and the reality that addicts face is a good thing. People make art about human struggles. Addiction being one of many. You do it in your way and that is valuable. Thanks

    Hey Stu, don't let the buzzkills take the wind out of your sails: It's nearly universal that peeps in recovery love hearing war stories. Why? Here are a few of my theories: 1. Tragedy plus time equals comedy. We all have the tragedies, most of us have had the time, so we find these stories amusing. 2. It's comforting to learn that others have been "down there" once, and now, they're "up here" (or else they wouldn't be alive enough to tell stories). 3. Hearing about it from someone else takes us out of our own heads for a minute. I don't know about you all, but the inside of my own head is...hellishly boring. I'm SO bored of my own experiences. Carry on, my brother.

    It’s the war stories that keep it a real reminder of how bad it gets. It’s not pretending everything was rosey because that attitude deflects us from the truth and we can fall into the trap of ‘it wasn’t that bad’ mentality. Keep it real Stu ❤

Luckily I don’t need to settle on an opinion to get something from your content Cheers

Sharing the sh*t parts is good because those who don't remember the past... etc. I look back on it all the time. I'm 2 minutes 18 seconds in... I'm going to see if my opinion changes however I don't think it will.... BAN IT!!! I've had my struggles with it and to the point of the start of withdrawals and hearing the whispering you talked about and also hallucinations. That was the point I knew something was wrong and stopped. Incidentally that was after 1 binge episode of 10 hours..... I kept hearing my name being called when no one was anywhere near me (I live alone). It was events like that made me realise that it had to stop. I have stopped for a period of 2.5 years before and that was 10 years ago.... this time hoping I can make it be for ever. You are a huge inspiration and a good person. I believe from watching your videos and also if it is banned the combination will stop me from ever touching it again. I had good news 3 weeks ago... good news of a new job and had a relapse of about 4 hours that turned into 10 hours but then I believe I am still at the point I control it. (potentially) Hopefully will never happen again. I have decided to not go to any Christmas party's this year or if I do I will go for 1 hour and drink water like I did ten years ago and then drive home. I think it should be banned however the government make a lot in taxation form it so won't ban it. It's stupid as they make the taxation money and then have to put the money back into policing and NHS care for when one of us goes too far.

    I was a functional and then crippled alcoholic for 20 years and after trying and trying to get sober with all the tools available, I realized I wasn't doing the work. For me personally, that was my barrier to sobriety. Dragging all this regret and guilt around and pretending to the world that I had it all figured out. It's ugly and it's painful but for me I need to keep dragging a bit of that remorse. Not as much as when I was an active drunk, but I need to be reminded of the damage I did. Now I also get the privilege of comparing that damage to where I am now and seeing some positive change. Confronting that guilt and baggage was, for me, the key to receiving more freedom from it. Accountability and all that shit.

    @markg.4246 День назад

    Hello Stu, I'm glad that you talked about this aspect of recovery. Sobriety is a process from every angle, and how we tell our story will evolve as we grow emotionally, and spiritually. The impact of "war stories" can certainly be beneficial, if told in conjunction with "what it's like now". I've heard many people relate their drinking histories, and like going to a movie, some are better than others. On the occasion that I am asked to speak, I will generally start like this..."I'm told that I have 45 minutes to tell my story". "Let me assure you that we will be done EARLY"! "What I have to say won't take 45 minutes". "Let me also assure you that I'm NOT going to bore you with a bunch of stories of what I did while drinking". At that point, those in attendance relax, and are more inclined to be interested. They already know what I did, so why bang on with the "I remember one time" stories? Not a day goes by that I don't think about the hurt that I caused my parents, siblings, friends, coaches, teachers, and employers, and how I diminished their lives. I carry that with me daily, so my involvement in sobriety reminds me to not forget the past, but to also live joyfully. Peace!...Mark

    A "healthy and positive approach" sounds like sanitized bureaucracy to me. The whole point of war stories is that he who is sitting at home in drunken misery, pondering a better way, can hear the way you suffered similarly and did in fact find a better way. In the middle of an AA group share is maybe not the best time for a 10-minute war story, but a RUclips channel is THE best time for it.

    I really enjoy what you are doing. Keep being you. You're never going to please everyone. You've made a positive impact on my life and I'm sure many others. War stories are a fun part of getting sober and a great way to relate to other sober people. They bring everyone to an equal playing field so even a 20 year old can relate to an 80 year old. We've all been brought to some dark places and now we are shedding light on them to get healthy.
