I always wanted to know what happened to Carl during this season. Florida mentioned him once. It was in episode 2, "Floridas Homecoming: Part 2". She said her and Carl brought Micheal a book about Black History. That was the only time Carl's name was mentioned.

It's a damn shame bringing Florida back couldn't stop the show sliding in the ratings, but it was so wonderful having Esther Rolle return.

The show was never the same without John Amos. Losing James hurt the show badly that 4th season. I understand why Esther left because she felt it was a horrible decision to kill off a powerful Black father figure, she never wanted to play a single mother who didn't have a strong father in the house. That said, I think Janet Jackson as Penny and Johnny Brown as Bookman helped the show stay afloat for two more seasons along with great character development for Willona. But I still think the show could've gone on much longer if James was still on the show.
