I tested it in my studio: close up on the mic, in mono, spoken word, and it sounds fantastic! However, out in the field my feeling so far is that it picks up quite a lot of ambiance even in mono. You’d probably want a hypercardioid for interviews.

I tend to think of it as at least for two people, don’t know if they can scale the portion size down, but as long as you make a reservation maybe yes?

I think it’s just that the mic picks up everything, and has a lot of presence in the upper mids. There are all sorts of fans, traffic and general city hum, and it will pick up every detail. But I haven’t noticed any fan noise at all from the R5C (once I start shooting it shuts down) or lens focusing noise from the 24-70 (super quiet). The rig itself is as quiet as I could ever hope (and I’m really picky about this).

@@Sol-In-Seoul makes sense, thanks. I probably have my fan setting differently as mine stays on when I record. I'm thinking of getting this Sanken as an on cam microphone to use on a Z cam E2F6. I often work in harsh environments where it's hard to get a separate sound person, and it looks like this will give lots of flexibility in post.

@@alzibaba Yeah, it’s flexible. However it leans slightly to ambiance over forward-facing speaker. You can just use the mono mic and kill the ambiance, however it’s cardioid not hyper-cardioid, so there’s never extreme isolation. Very cool mic though, nobody really makes this high quality of stereo in such a small package.

@@Sol-In-Seoul Thanks, that's good to know. The stereo imaging is fantastic quality for such a small package for sure. I can think of several contexts where it'd be great for what I do, and others where I'd definitely need a shotgun mic. Hey ho, more gear, sigh 😂
