Here you can see and hear the kora, the west-African harp which is played mainly in the Gambia, Mali, Guinée and Senegal. But this beautiful instrument is also played in Amsterdam, the Netherlands by Albert Distelbrink. My first contact with the kora was 35 + years ago, for sure. Since then I had several teachers from the countries mentioned above and I also find my own way on the kora. In all the traditional pieces I play, I try to add up some variations, melodies and rhythms of my own. I would like to share my passion for the kora with you. You can see and hear songs from my album "Kora Dioulo", live performances as well as home recordings. I am also pleased to be part of a group called "Mokumfoli" where alongside the kora you can hear balafons, djembe's, doun doun and other percussion. I also play with musicians from other backgrounds, like the project "Paradiya", a combination of the kora with the bansuri, bambooflute from India, a warm world music blend. I also play African pop.
Full Moon Special: "Mooniyamba" on Kora and Guitar
On the way back home from a holiday in the mountains of Austria, we became inspired by the bright moonlight and in a deserted field we played our version of the old west African song "Miniyamba", a mythical story about a giant snake, probably dating back 10 centuries! Intimate and acoustic music among the crickets and mosquitos.

Interpretation of Kulanjan (Koulandian), one of the oldest songs in the traditional repertoire from Mali. This praise song is about a great hunter named Bala Kulanjan. The song predates the kora and was probably composed on the Ngoni. Played by Paradiya: Kees van Boxtel on Bansuri and Albert Distelbrink on Kora.

Hallo Albert, Ik ben oude muziekcassettes aan het digitaliseren om ze weg te kunnen gooien. Waarschijnlijk heb jij deze opnamen ook wel, maar ik noem ze toch even voor de zekerheid: Toumani Diabaté & groep in het Soeterijn (Tropenmuseum) opgenomen in 1993 door waarschijnlijk het radioprogramma Horizon of de Wandelende Tak (VPRO) Duur 60 minuten zonder aankondigingen. Deze heb ik al gedigitaliseerd en kan ik via wetransfer zo opsturen. Verder heb ik nog een muziekcassette van een live optreden van Toumani Diabaté opgenomen in Seattle 1991 en uitgezonden door de VPRO in 1994. Deze opname heb ik nog niet beluisterd. of gedigitaliseerd, maar die zal vanmiddag ook klaar zijn. Laat het even weten of je behoefte hebt aan deze gedigitaliseerde opnamen. groetjes, Paul G.

I love the kora, I love ancient sound of Mali, Senegal and the Songhai Empire; its preceding kingdoms and its successors. @Albert Distelbrink I am not sure how to feel about your adoption of the kora and african dress. I am not sure about the fact you take the place of a Giot yet you are not of such decent. It does come across and an eccentrice insult. As a musican you can appreciate such music, however this shouldnt mean you let your arrogance compel you to take the place of a giot on stage. There are many Kora players in Africa that should be on that stage. Looking at the audiance and you all being white almost makes it look like a Minstrel Show :( This saddens me much. You are not the ambassador we need. Even your playing style rather than meditative seems like you are Jazzing it out.
Like an african griot is free to play a guitar, i am free to play a kora, also encouraged by many african koraplayers. Many african koraplayers play on stages worldwide and i am not in the way of anyone. The african dress i am wearing was a gift from a griotfamily, who very much appreciated my visit....i hope this is allowed by you...It seems that you are creating a problem that doesn t exist. Sorry to upset you....
@@albertdistelbrink There are bands like "The Kora Band" and other players with less melanin and also a few females. But none compelled in me a sense of concern as you have. I think your response hints to me as to how I should feel and felt seeing your performance. It has a hint of entitlement so please kindly reflect on the recent history of humanity and the specific tendency of our beloved Western brothers to take from a culture, change its story, and destroy the origins of that which they claimed to appreciate. I love the Kora and I am glad you love it too. I do not intend or attempt to dissuade you from playing; I merely held up a mirror to you for you to reflect. There is arrogance in the hearts of many in the West, I hope you truly check your heart and weigh its humility and intention. The story of how you got the dress is wholly irrelevant. Wear your normal clothes, relax, and play calmly from the heart; it isn't a competition. Do try and avoid making minstrelsy out of such an ancient dress and instrument. All the best on your journey

Hi Albert, well done! Some notes feel off pitch, though. I guess the tune is pentatonic, because it is originally played on the kamelen ngoni. And there are some effects like slaps and mute sounds that you can hardly reproduce on the kora. I guess you would love to check out the ngoni some day.
Thanks for your reaction, i really love the kamelengoni. I only used one note one time that is not in the pentatonic tuning. Even in the original it is played on the guitar! I am well aware that a kora is not a ngoni, but it was worth the challenge and it s an interpretation on my kora, not an exact copy.

@@albertdistelbrink Ik ben het met je eens. Het gekke is dat sinds ik met pre-pensioen ben, ik overal tijd tekort voor kom. Heeft ook te maken met veel schuren en huis opknappen. Dat laat zich moeilijk combineren met soepele vingers oefenen, zeker als het wintertijd is hoewel het niet heel koud is deze winter. Komt later wel weer.
