This is an excellent police training video in that it will help to protect women and the children in their care who are victims of domestic abuse. Very sadly, with respect to male victims the same cannot be said. In this video content, male victims and their children are largely ignored. Inspector Dr Rob Ewin, Head of Learning & Development rightly promotes "Evidence-Based Policing". Sadly the evidence presented here, with no male victim's stories apparent to me, implies that DA policing in Cumbria remains very gendered. No wonder Dr Ewin writes about some male DA victims being treated as offenders. Early on it is stated by a Cumbria Constabulary police officer that there are 3.1 million female DA victims and 600,000 male victims. Thankfully the slide is correct, with 1.3 million female victims. Maybe it was a slip of the tongue, but it ought to have been corrected immediately by the presenter, or at some point afterwards by someone else. While there is a lot of non-gendered language, the video depicts abut ten perpetrators who are male and their victims who are female. As a male survivor of female perpetrated domestic abuse several years prior to Cumbria Constabulary publishing its first male DA victim's story on its website, what evidence is there that Cumbria Constabulary really has improved its support for male DA victims during the last decade? The evidence here implies that many male victims, who are known to be two and a half times less likely than women to disclose their plight to anyone, are not being properly supported by Cumbria Constabulary.

Please also consider that many male victims of domestic abuse come to the attention of mental health crisis services. This is because male victims are less likely to know where to seek help, they are two and a half times less likely to tell anyone and they are less likely than women to recognise it as domestic abuse. In some instances they discover or they are mistakenly directed towards a service for women,such as National Domestic Abuse Helpline. Their "For women and children..." slogan appears on every webpage. While this is an important service for women, a man may interpret being directed there as meaning men do not experience domestic abuse or that it is not accepted that men experience domestic abuse, so there is no help available for him. After looking on their website, he may not know what to do to get help. This can increase his risk of suicide.

Please bear in mind that some abusive females choose to deceive their male partner in order to become pregnant, while he does not wish to father a child. Examples are telling him she is using contraception when she is not. This may have been combined with her secretly testing for ovulation in order to maximise her chances of becoming pregnant. At the peak time of ovulation, she may have been keen to maximise the chance of conception by having sex as frequently as possible. She may have chosen to supply a condom with holes in it. Asking appropriate questions may reveal this reproductive coercion, which can in effect be a life sentence for the victim. In other cases, women fake pregnancy in order to secure a partner, sometimes for marriage. In some cases pregnancy might amount to economic abuse of a man for at least eighteen years.

It is stated that "...on average 2 women a week die from DA- factor in suicide and that figure rises to ten women a week". What are the two equivalent figures for men? We know this is very important because for every one woman who tragically takes her own life, there are three men.

It is stated that "...seven women a month are killed by a current or former partner in England and Wales." I believe the ONS figure for 2021-22, the latest available, was sixty for the year. That is an average of five a month. Glad to see that figure coming down. What is the figure for men?
