2024 Distinguished Speaker Series: Africentric Social Work, with Dr. Wanda Thomas Bernard
In a 2014 lecture entitled Racism is Killing Us Softly, Dr. Wanda Thomas Bernard stated, “We need to lead the change. I want change yesterday, not 10 years from now.” Ten years later, in this 2024 Distinguished Lecture, Dr. Bernard explores how Africentric social work in Canada moved from the margins to the center to create opportunities for systemic change. Using lessons from the field, she highlights transformative practices rooted in Africentricity in her work with families and communities.

These trans women disgrace transgender community. They don't try to look like woman just making people to vomit and hate us more. Go get facial surgery and voice surgery.
What are some medical hypnosis trainings you recommend in Canada and which association or college regulates these professionals in Canada?
It starts with the government who needs to first increase income support for elderly so they can afford essential services and goods.
Depressing yet, informative. Thank you. Fight the Power!✊🏾❤
This mistreatment of the elderly and disabled are actually encouraged in Australia, they are accused of being a burden on the economy and society.
Happy place: "indigenous identity..." 💝"...guided by spirit"😎😷🙋♀️
I appreciate this very powerful presentation by socially and intellectual educated Warrior Women! "Riots begins when..."😊😎😷🙋♀️
Great and insightful. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing. Very insightful. I look forward to learning more. Thank you.
Wow cool! A couple of babboons and a self hating White clown. Awesome stuff guys!
To hell with Canada, cold and wretched country. It depresses me
Social workers are racist, they hate white people.
Howbracism DOES cause PTSD
"White liberal silence is a nod to the status quo" wow
i have 20 years in the social work field. I am currently pursing my MSW. I am the only black male in my cohort. I often feel like i dont belong but yet feel i have a responsibility.
As the only one in your program, it's likely to feel different - and do keep at it. Try to make an effort to participate in as much as possible to form a circle regardless. As a transfer student, I felt very different/lonely and had to work very hard to form friendships-admittedly only a few. The good thing: allowed more time for study and good grades and subsequently a very good job.
lmao what a load of tripe
grateful to see this uploaded
at 51:00 she says that real progress will be made when Whites give up privilege. I'm trying to understand what that would look like.
When they say white, they are including all white people regardless of ethnic background, country of origin, economc status, and what other variables. What is the specific hard research that documents this necessity versus personal experiences. No one looks like everyone else - but I will say there is class consciousness - there is hard research about this although it is rarely if ever discussed..
This talk was excellent!
so who is rosa parks. buried in rotunda. Its horrifying to see black and brown racism to their own kind. Om my goodness
there is tremendous black and brown racism to coloured people . How do you account for that
Transexuals lost me when they came out of the closet. Secrecy protects privacy of psychiatric disorders. There are no trans women, just men with psychiatric problems
Great discussion. A talk hosted by University of Toronto further to discuss how black voices are being silenced. I nearly did a spit take when they mentioned "white trauma" 🤣🤣🤣
Black voices being silent???? I don't think so... They the first ones to scream racism when nothing goes their way.. an I'm talking about ship yard work all the way to a store clerk... I'm a 49 yr old white man an I'd never was interested in being a boss for many reasons.. A lot of white bosses have to keep our mouths shut no matter what... in fact the white bosses jump all over white employees because they know we not going to make 40 kinds of hell.. Many times I've stood face to face with my boss who is white an toll him if you going to jump my shit for this or that, then you better go treat the black employees the same way because I'm not putting up with that crap... no way.
A very valuable talk. I'm saying this as a Canadian-born Chinese who has experienced low-key subtle systemic racism from the majority visable minority "Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese Demographics" within the chinese Minority within Canada. Specifically I am saying this as a half-hakka chinese, half teo-chew chinese with Malaysian as well as white culture within my household. So as a very multicultural and openminded household, and a person from a such a household I can appreciate the marginalization addressed in this discourse. Unfortunately, the discourse is usually limited to the white demographic - black demographic dynamic. Hopefully, openmindedness and the discourse of such will be broadened in the future. Peace
Thank you for bringing up the limited focus when we have hispanic, indigenous, and certain ethnic groups. This is not only a black/white issue, but it gets all the press and focus. Unclear why that is, but will look into it when I have time.
UofT has engaged in some of the most harshest racist policies for enrolment same as Queens University this goes back from the 1800s all the way up until 2010
Hey, love the work. From what you said, I think you will be interested this channel 👉 #drjohnaking. I find him informative, yet down to earth.

I am graduating with my B.S.W next month... my final project is on racial bias in social work/white saviors.... thank you for this.
Please share/explain from your own research project what you have found about social work bias. I am hoping it is a double blind study versus exploratory or a case study. We lack mjuch hard research, and duplication of hard research is even more difficult to find! BTW, I question that you might have a bias just by your statement "socialwork/white saviors."
I don’t understand why accutane is tagged here though?

I didn't think I needed this video. Thank you to all of the panel members for sharing your ideas and personal experiences. I am an old , white guy. Was once young, but always white. As a young immigrant, I experienced rasicm. But I blended in after a few years. Maybe that is why I ended up in social work at U of T in 1960's. My formative years were in lower mainland British Columbia. I thought Canada was not unlike the racial mix in BC. Moving to Toronto exploded my cultural mosaic to a kaleidascope. My few years in the Northwest Territories in 1970s, gave me a glimpse of colonialism and the long lasted tentacles of European, monarchistic, class society that has dominated Canadian culture and all its sturctures. You have many allies, as there are many voices who share the struggle for recognition and respect. My work with developmental disabilities reflects the struggle for a place of equality and caring in Canadian society. Wish you well
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and personal experiences!
Thank you for your comments and especially the workshops you have given.
Wow amazing!
