    I don't doubt that language will continue to change, but I would suggest that the advent of modern technologies will actually keep it somewhat anchored down to its current state, whereas prior to these technologies, English only existed as a living language, and people were exposed only to speakers they came into direct contact with, and whatever written materials as well. Future generations will continue to revisit texts and audiovisual materials published in the 20th and 21st century, giving them a staying power beyond the lives of the speakers, and I think will have a tendency to keep people pronouncing things and writing in a substantially similar way. The change I foresee is that English will perhaps lose some of its vowel richness, as billions of people speaking with accents will influence what is considered the mainstream standard, or perhaps a pleasant variant, such as a neo-Indian accent may emerge, and the result will be a simplification and loss of some of the more unique vowels (and substituting them for purer vowels). People might start pronouncing words closer to the spelling despite that being considered incorrect currently. Source: my bum.

    The whole "question mark?" Feels a little redundant, as we already do that by ending the sentence with "maybe?" Or "I think?" With giving a statement but also being unsure just before ending your sentence

    I also hear Southern Californians (more so than Northerners) shifting short i /ɪ/ toward /ɛ/ so bit sounds midway between bet and bit. Big sounds between beg and big.

    Really getting tired of people saying Japanese Kanji as if it is the Japanese invented them and is unique them, and people in general have no idea the word "Kanji" literally just simply means "Chinese Character" It is okay to refer it as the Japanese Kanji in the specific Japanese grammatical/vocalbulary context is one thing, but still calling them "Japanese" Kanji when talking about some of the most basic logic of the Chinese character is just so obnoxious.😅

    Also something to keep in mind: The Californian accent has had a major impact on the General American accent. The Californian accent was normalized via Hollywood, and therefore had a massive influence on the rest of the world. Media is a powerful thing.

    Languages are becoming optimized not simplified lmao

  • @drdca8263
    @drdca8263 7 часов назад

    Why would the language getting simpler imply becoming useless? Well, if it gets simpler than some minimum complexity, sure, but why can’t it be that the minimum viable complexity is much lower than any language so far has gotten? I mean, that seems unlikely, and not supported by evidence I guess, But it doesn’t seem a priori impossible, is my point

    I think Krashen is right in every way, except for the idea that input alone is sufficient. It may be sufficient for a child learning their native language, but for an adult L2 learner, the amount of input you would need to truly acquire your language is massive. The downside of being an adult is your brain is no longer plastic and you no longer have parents to give you comprehensible input for 8 hours a day, every day, for years. The upside is that your adult brain is capable of studying the grammar, shortcutting and accelerating some of the acquisition process. The output part is also indispensable for identifying the gaps in your abilities. When I'm listening to a podcast, I'm not always thinking about whether they used the right form of a verb, I just hear that verb and understand the meaning from context. It's only when I go to use that verb myself that I have to both remember it and know how to use the right form of it.
