WeatherStar 4000 - Denver, CO - March Snowstorm 3/14/2024 9:48 PM MT
This was quite the storm, and at the time of this upload... the storm's still not over! Areas in the southwest Denver metro have seen up to about 20" of snow, according to reports submitted to the National Weather Service.
I have tried uploading this video in a H.264 video format at 720p in an attempt to preserve some quality. RUclips seems to dislike 480p video (as well as interlaced video), and the 4000 outputs a interlaced NTSC video signal. Hopefully this one looks decent.

Final video for my #LAT48s on this fine Halloween night! This one features a blunder where the 4000's forecast is running behind the 3000. A "D" flavor ran, then I ran the "M" flavor (which had a missing page, whoops) that I initially wanted to run. Figured I'd upload the entire thing instead of only the M flavor!

Here's a quick video showing me writing some data to a LTO-3 tape on a LTO-4 drive, as well as restoring the content and playing a video back in VLC. The write times in this video are slower than what I normally get... for instance, last night I ran a full backup of my NAS and I could get about 110-120MiB/s of sustained writing, and bursts up to 130-140MiB/s using a LTO-4 tape. This was the Weather Channel I knew and love and grew up on. I wish there was an emulator for it like there is for 4000. I know, I've heard that it would be a lot to actually get it working, but a y2kid can dream

I had a very big temperature drop between December 23-24, 2022 where it was 62 degrees at 3 AM December 23, 2022 and 24 hours later, it was down to -2. I had a flash freeze during the day December 23, 2022 with rapidly falling temperatures with 0.3 inch of snow falling during the big temperature drop. The low on the morning of Christmas Eve 2022 was -2 with a high of just 8 degrees.

Is this using SAS connector? What kind of adapter are you using?
Correct, this is using SAS. The PCIe card I'm using to connect to the drive is an LSI Logic LSI00138 SAS3801E HBA. I just went on eBay and searched for the cheapest PCIe SAS HBA I could get my hands on. I think I had to flash the HBA firmware to IT mode to get the tape drive to work.
This video helped tremendously with my LTO-4 drive. I was looking at something like Uranium Backup for a GUI option in Windows 10, but wondering if you had a better solution? I haven't had any luck getting my drive to be "seen" by the WSL terminal to perform these types of commands in Windows 10. Also, would love to know the type of keyboard you have? Amazing sound and reminds me of my first computer, could you let me know the make/model please?
Glad I could help! I've tried Veeam on Windows 11, which seems to work. I wrote to a tape, but have yet to actually try restoring with that software... so I can't definitively say I'm sold on it. I've also taken a look at Uranium Backup, but it comes with a price tag for the version that supports tape backups. If you find something that works nicely on Windows, let me know! I like using tar because it's universal among Linux distributions, whereas if I use some commercial product, I am locked into their product. As far as the keyboard goes, it's a "New Model M" (104 key) from Unicomp. Their website is pckeyboard(dot)com. They also sell the Classic model, which has the same size profile as a IBM Model M.
Surprisingly, Msys2 could access the tape drive under Windows, mapped to /dev/st0, and could be operated with tar.
Also Veeam Backup Community edition is free to write files into tape drive, but it’s quite complicated to set up.

proxmox backup server would be nice with that LTO4 drive. I have the same drive and it's running strong in my proxmox cluster.
You're telling me a market is still using a 4000 in 2021? I have my doubts, but if so that's impressive.
I got myself an LTO 6 drive a few years ago, I really appreciate the ease of use of LTFS on windows explorer but it's nice to see the old school way every now and then :) I really want an LTO 9 drive for my archive but still pricey.
I love the WeatherStar 4000's unique design I wish they kept it :(
