I Deep Freeze An EV At -30°C To See If EV Haters Are Right
If you have spent even a few hours reading comments on EV content online, you will quickly realize there are many EV haters out there and many of them are focused on one thing: EVs don't work in winter.
So I decided to deep freeze an EV at -30°C in winter to see if all these EV haters are right. And since I live in Northern Canada (Edmonton, Alberta to be exact) we get plenty of very cold winter days.
What do you think? Do you think they are right and my electric car got stranded, wouldn't start and I wasn't even able to charge the battery?
Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Is Shell ReCharge Finally A Good Option For EV Fast Charging?
Good debunking with proven experimental tests.
I thought this was a well conducted and interesting test. Left me feeling reassured. How what age is your Soal. Many thanks.
The anti-EV people who say that EVs don't work in the cold are EV "experts" who have never even sat in an EV.
Using a heatpump to generate heat at -30° sounds desperate. Why not simple electric heating (resistor wires) for that purpose?
Horses for courses me thinks. Our chargers here refused to work and the temp was no where near as cold as you had there. The quality of the charging station needs to be taken into account.
-30°C and You don't need gloves?? 😂😂😂 (you only got 2km)
my bolt worked at -11 f thiis ev is great
Under normal circumstances one would leave the car plugged in over night and then preheat before leaving home. I know that quite a few of my friends keep their cars in their garage both petrol and electric cars, My kia Niro is left on the drive but the it only gets to -5° c round these parts.
Why would you not leave it charging over night? It would be intresting to see what the results would be if you had plugged. It in and leave it to charge over night. Or to precondition the car for 30 min before driving it? I am sure you will do those tests though.
Not sure that there really are that many EV haters or indeed “haters” of any kind. Here, in the UK, folk are more bemused than anything else.
the reason the taxi drivers in Chicago had problems last year i think ... was they all ran there cars to low state of charge and did not preheat the batteries.. also when the station was full they did not go to another station if you look where they had issues there were 4 more tesla charger stations within a 10 mile range also there were many level 2 chargers that they could have plugged in and gotten some recovery instead of Turing everything off and freezing the battery while waiting at the station. Most the issue were they all bought used Tesla's single motor cars and did not RTFM and did not realize you need to navigate to charger even if you know where it is.
Dogging in evs is best.
Gosh, my diesel won't even start at those temperatures.
Thanks for this video. Even on very cold temperatures the batteries will work. I once had a Diesel that stopped working at -20 Celsius. What’s about the crack in the windshield window? Aren’t you afraid of the window bursting? In Germany, you won’t get a pass on TUEV inspection for a crack in the windshield. They say, it’s integral foundation of the vehicle stiffness. Anyway, a safe journey with your Kia.
Glad you liked the video! As for the crack, this is not a problem here and we do not have regular inspections like in Europe. Cars are only inspected if they are “exported” to other provinces and registered there. Cracks happen very often as they like to use gravel and sand during winter. So not only cracks, but also rock chips on paint. It’s really bad and I hope they can figure out a better solution. I will get my windshield replaced this summer and hopefully it will last more than one winter.
Awesome test! We do not get it that cold any more now here in Europe (Czech Republic). Usually, I would try not to fast charge my Tesla in extreme cold because it puts enormous stress on the car. Just AC if possible but I get that you did it for the test 😊 in the Tesla, temps under zero are no issue as well, preheating and preconditioning and wooom, one starts in a nicely warm car. You have a big crack in the windscreen, like I had last autumn. Not a legal issue in Canada? Because here the police would make trouble and charge a fine (I was afraid of that cause I had to do an 800km with it to get back home to Prague (happened in Germany).
I don’t usually DC fast charge a frozen battery. You are correct, this was only a test to see what would happen. I’m glad you like the video. Tesla cars do very well in winter and with their best in class battery preconditioning they make DC fast charging in winter super easy. In Canada the crack is fine…almost everyone has one or two on their windshield. They love to lay down gravel and rocks on snow in the winter so it’s very easy to get a cracked windshield here. I will be getting a new windshield this summer to replace this one so hope it will last more than one winter. Thanks for watching!

Who cares... They should work! No need to be so smuggg. My car 2008 just goes..and not all this thinking about will it / loading / bla bla...
I’m very happy for you.
@LeftCoastEV Hmm, you also have a 12 volt little battery. That one is a riscfactor in these cold weathers. Just wait a few more years and you'll have the same problems as ICE cars.
@@RealButcher EVs don't need to crank a starter motor to start up. They just start.
Where I live, my coldest driving experience was walking into the car in +25F, but the car and the car's heater worked without issue. I charge at home, so had no reason or desire to visit a DC fast charger that day. As to road trips, I don't think I would want to do a big road trip in -30 levels of cold, in any kind of vehicle. Much rather just wait a few months for the weather to warm up and make the big road trip then.
Charging at home makes owning an EV a pleasure. I DC fast charge exclusively on road trips nowadays and I have to agree with you that road trips of any kind are better during warmer months. However, I know many people use their car for work and do travel on business trips using their vehicle. So it’s still doable to travel long distances in an EV in winter, it will just take a bit more time depending on the vehicle you drive.
A better test would have been to take this car for a 300 km. drive and back and then see how those batteries would hold up. The biggest thing about E.Vs is that after 10 years they are absolutely worthless in value., as it will cost just as much or more to replace those batteries than to buy a new car. I'm one of those who hang on to my vehicles for a long time. My oldest is an '82 pickup that I still drive. 450,000 km and the engine still does not burn any oil. Next is a'93 3/4 ton. Engine still purrs like a Tomcat in a creamery. Also, 525,000 km. on it. Next an 2011 Jeep Grande Cherokee. And a 2012 Impala. I will not be buying any new vehicles from here on. These vehicles I can repair myself for the most part . These older vehicles are now classics(some of them) and are professionally appraised at more than what I paid for them brand new. Insurance through Hagerty is cheap. PLates are now permanent on them. Do not have to renew every year. THey all have A.C., cruise, power windows, power door locks anti skid brake system. What more do I need? THAT's IT. I'm happy. I'll stick with my petrol powered vehicles. Takes me 10 minutes to fuel up and I'm on my way again. 😃😃
My Kia has driven over 100,000km at this point (if you pause the video you can check for yourself as it was close to 100k when I filmed it). So you are grabbing at straws buddy, what is the purpose of this comment? Oh and the battery is doing fine, thanks for asking.
Newer EV batteries, especially LFP ones, are going to last for absolute ages.
BMS State of Charge measures the gross battery while State of Charge measures usable battery so, in reality, the State of Charge is what you should pay attention to, not the BMS SOC. Kia and Hyundai have only started having remote heated seats in their EV's. You can pre heat the cabin but your butt is still cooooold. But preheating is still an awesome feature. I had a few -30c mornings last year but the car was warm (cold seats), windows clear, etc., and the car started up as normal with no sticky buttons and no noticeable motor whine and only a little big of cold lag.
Not sure where you are located in the world, but the Kia app available in Canada is horrible. Plus, after giving you a trial period for 3 years, Kia wants to charge you $18.99 per month for the most useful connected serviced (like remote start). So now I do my own preconditioning before a trip. Wish it was like what Tesla is doing, giving you the basics for free.
@@LeftCoastEV That's too bad. Hyundai has those features for life AFAIK. I am in Southern BC, in the North Okanagan (warm in summer and cold in winter).
I think they do give these features for life. Also, the Hyundai app is more stable and intuitive than the one provided by Kia. Oh you live in a very nice part of BC. We travel there quite often during the summer as a stop over to see family in the Lower Mainland.
Nice
the only real issue with EVs in extreme cold is when you don't have a overnight plug at home to start the day with full charge you have to rely on public charging which might take hours. ( by my house in cold weather i see line of 5-10 evs waitng to charge up)
Where do you live that so many people are waiting to charge each and every day?
This is why we need more level 2 charging. If you can find a level 2 charger within walking distance of home work, even if the charge itself does take hours, you don't really care.
Exactly. When I first for my EV I lived in a high rise apartment building and we didn’t have charging. Thankfully there were two Level 2 chargers and three Level 1 plugs available 10 minutes walking distance. That’s how I charged the car for 2 years. We then moved into a house and I installed charging in my garage which is a game changer.
I had the unfortunate experience of driving a gas car the other day. Forgot how bad they were. Also interesting we made a similar video at the same moment!
Ugh I feel for you. Hertz didn't have any EVs available? Yeah when I saw your video I thought to myself that great minds think alike!
Well, I just realized how much better an EV is when the complete traffic braks down (A Lorry burned in a tunnel.). The ICE vehicles had trouble to charge the battery, heat the car and keep the engine cool. When we were finally ablevtobroll a few meters mist of them had to refuel, while it was negligable for the EV. It can heat without thevsupport of the engine and the reserves forvthesecproblems are bigger than in an ICE car.
You may want to preheat the battery initially.
Of course, when using the car normally it gets preconditioned in my garage. This video is just a test.
Can someone please tell me what App he’s using in this video?
I can tell you. It’s Car Scanner. You can download from the Google Play and iOS store.
Do that test again in 8 years plus because your tune will change, a few hot summers and freezing winters will shorten the life of that battery, that car will be in the scrap yard In a few years while a diesel and petrol car will still be usable 10 plus years old. It's a silly video, (oh look at me driving and charging my new EV.)
Hey don’t take it out on me if your life sucks and you hate me for having fun ok?
Driving and charging his new EV? It’s a 2021 Kia Soul with 100,000 km on it.
Exactly. Dude didn’t even bother to watch the video but has opinions.
Well within ten minutes you would have fueled up and ICE car and would be nice and toasty as well. The electric cars are NOT very green though are they.
Charging is not the point of this video, but I guess I need to spell it out for you, eh? No worries, here it is: I charge my EV at home, overnight on a Level 2 charger. I leave home with a "full tank" and can drive quite a long way...pretty much as far as you can drive your dino juice vehicle. I don't need to stand outside in the cold with a nozzle in my hand smelling ICE car fumes, but if you like that smell...all good, you do you. Most importantly I can precondition my EV inside my CLOSED garage and not risk my whole family dying from carbon dioxide exposure...you, on the other hand, need to idle your dino juice vehicle outside for at least 30 minutes (or more) to get it nice and toasty while burning fuel and polluting our environment. ICE cars are NOT very green, are they?
AND, also can you turn on the cars heater to keep you warm?
Of course. Check 4:25 of the video and you will see the heat is on. In the Kia it is a separate button called "heat" which you can see in that part of the video.
EVs are a SCAM, Hybrid is Beautiful
Amazing, thank you for your valuable insight.
Are people actually bothered to charge these milk floats🤣
Haha look at Mr. Comedian over here. You got some great jokes my friend. Keep them coming!
wtf why aren’t you using the pre-heating function before you open the door..?!?
Because that is not the point of this video! This video shows that even without preconditioning anything, the EV starts, drives and is able to DC fast charge...something that apparently is impossible when you read all the EV hater comments on Facebook.
Many thanks for sharing the truth about electric cars👍
With so much misinformation out there, EV owners like us need to do our part!
I lived in Edmonton for 37 years. Finally escaped 10 years ago 😀
Nice! Where did you escape to?
We don't get that cold in the UK 😊 My wife has the same car, she love it especially that she can preheat the car on cold days so she never has to get in a cold car ;)
Haha next time I will try to preheat the car before getting in ;)
@LeftCoastEV it'd be interesting to see what it will charge at if you did the cabin pre heat etc. I believe these Kia souls do have a heat pump as standard
They do have a heat pump. Good idea I will try doing the preheating next time it gets cold to see how different the results are. Thanks for this idea!
That was great….answered my questions about all of that.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the video.
90% of new car sales was EV's in Norway last year. Would have been really stupid if EV's didn't work in cold winter 😀 We had -20C and below in three weeks last winter and my Jaguar I-pace had no issues - except high consumption.
We who drive EVs all know that they have no issues running in the cold...this video is more for those folks still on the fence about EVs and who are worried about driving them in cold temps. Conclusion: there is nothing to worry about except, like you said, higher consumption.
Doesn’t diesel turn into a sort of jelly when it gets below -10 Celsius?
Yes, it's called jelling I believe. It can happen just below 0 degrees C but is more prevalent in extreme temps like when I shot this video. This is why people in Northern Canada that drive ICE (especially diesel) plug them in at night to keep the components warm.
What’s apparent to me from watching your video is I wouldn’t want to head to Calgary from Edmonton and you can forget about driving to any of the rural communities say 1.5 to 2 hours away , try to charge at the non existent public chargers and go home .
What's apparent to me from reading your comment is that you have no idea about EVs and how they work. This is not a range test nor charging test. I drive from Edmonton to Calgary all the time without issue and I've been to Abraham Lake, as an example, during the winter many times which, and I will tell you this cause I know you don't know, is 129km for an available charger (one way).
I think what was shown in the video was sort of a worst-case cold weather driving experience. Specifically: - The Kia Soul EV is not the best EV on the market in range or charging performance. There are plenty of opportunities to get more range and faster charging by simply using a different EV model, rather than an ICE vehicle. - The car would charge faster if preconditioned via the app about 30 minutes before heading to the charger. For purposes of the video, this was deliberately not done in order to show the audience what happens, but in an actual road trip situation, you would absolutely be preconditioning the battery.
Greetings fom Finland. I like to remotely start heating my Soul 10 minutes before I go to the car in the morning :) Takes the worst edge off.
I do the same on normal days when not filming a video like this!
Trump will put a stop to all this madness. Who cares about EV's anyway.
Only for the next 4 years 😉
Trump can't stop anything.
Yep, Trump is really mad.
If you don't want to waste time at a fast charger in such conditions make sure to plan your charge by telling the car your destination and that you are going there to charge. The car will change it's parameters for battery conditioning and acceptable minimum battery left if it knows where you are going. How far it is vs it's range will help determine how fast it can and should heat the battery. The goal being to avoid heating time at the fast charger. It is also a good idea for it to be networked so it can see if there will be a charger available as well. Coming to a charge-queue and having the battery cool down again before it's your turn becomes a nightmare. It is easily avoided by telling the car what you are doing.
Great tips! Thanks!
Fascinating. What is the view if only driving short distances in EVs at such cold temperatures versus ICE. Also with ICE you could fill up fuel quickly.
On a full battery even at these temps I lose about 30% of projected range which is around 452km. I fill up at home in my garage and leave with a full warm battery. The point of this video was to show that even at cold temperatures EVs work no problem, not about range, driving or if filling up an ICE car is better. Thanks for watching!
Assuming you charge at home, fueling times don't matter for short trips. The factors that do matter all favor the EV. Specifically: - You don't have to stand out in the cold, even for 5 minutes, to pump gas. - The passenger cabin heats more quickly because the electric resistance heater kicks in right away, without waiting for an engine to warm up. - When going into a store to buy something, you can leave the heater running and come back to a warm car, without needing to spew out toxic gasses for everyone in the parking lot. - Home charging is cheap, so it costs less to run. - EVs tend to get better traction on snow, due to the heaviest part of the car (the battery) being distributed across the entire car, compared to an ICE engine, which is under the hood, near the front.
Also low maintenance costs. No need for oil changes. Regenerative breaking saves you money on break pads. No need to go to the service centre for service. Less moving parts mean few failure points. There are many more advantages than this.
I don’t think the question is whether it’s possible, but rather what’s more comfortable. I recently took my first winter trip with a BEV, and I won’t be doing it again. With an ICE, the trip would go like this: wake up, have breakfast, enjoy a coffee, check out and head home-about a 3-4 hour drive. With a BEV, it went like this: set an alarm to go to fast charger before heading home, only to discover it was charging at 15-20 kW, meaning I had to wait at the charger for over an hour, almost two hours. The journey, which should have taken 3-4 hours, ended up taking 5-6. A diesel or PHEV would use 5-6L on that route, charging the BEV cost me more.
Hmmm my question is thus: why didn't you charge the car the night before to 80%? I assume you were driving and thus had a warm battery and your charge time would have been much shorter had you arrived right off the highway at a DC fast charger. Second: why didn't you try booking a hotel with a Level 2 charger? Many hotel booking apps nowadays have a filter for this. Then you could have charged the car overnight and left with 100%. Third, even if there was no Level 2 charger at the hotel, you could have fast charged the night before and then, once you arrived at the hotel, plugged into even a standard wall outlet and Level 1 charged until morning which from 80% to 100% would be doable. Most hotels are OK with this if you ask. Fourth, even if you wake up without charging the night before, you can precondition the car and battery via the app and then when you arrive at the DC fast charger with a warm enough battery. You didn't mention which EV you drive, so I assume it is one built in the last few years. So, it's more user error than the fault of the EV. A little planning (and I mean little) goes a long way.
@LeftCoastEV I booked a hotel with a charger, but when I returned in the evening, the charger was occupied. I drive a Stellantis, and they don’t have preconditioning. You don’t have to immediately blame the user-it’s fairer to acknowledge the flaws.
You gave me zero insight into your situation or the car you drive. You can still use all my other suggestions for future road trips. It’s not that hard.
@@LeftCoastEV And I didn’t plan just a little-I planned a lot. I called the hotel before booking to ask if the charger was working, asked people living in that city for available chargers, and have more than 30 different charging apps and RFID cards, plugshare, abrp, etc. But sometimes, even all that isn’t enough to make the trip easier. I made it home, I didn’t need a tow to a charger, but still, next time I’m taking an ICE, the BEV stays in the city (at least in winter).
This should have been your original comment. Context is necessary. Thanks for sharing your experience.
That "motor" whin is because the gearbox oil very thick and waxy, so the gears dont have much lubrication
Thanks for the info!
Thank you
You are welcome!
This guy just proved how bad Ev's are in extreme cold and considers it a win 35 minutes just to warm up the battery just to get it charging at a decent rate while freezing his ass off lame
You just proved to be uniformed and missed the point of this video.
I'm assuming the guy had a home charger, and that the only reason for even taking the car to the fast charger was for purposes to the RUclips video to show the audience what would happen. Without the needs of the video, he'd just be plugging in at home, charging overnight, and the battery would be charged by morning, regardless of temperature.
Turn off the AC!
Thanks for the tip!
الشحن الذي تستخدمة 50 كيلو واط بطئ جدا
50kW is all I have close to home. Thanks for watching!
who cares, nobody wants one anyway.
Don’t worry one day all the cars will be electric and you will have to care. Thanks for watching!
@LeftCoastEV As far as I am concerned it is a failed, inferior technology. You see, I was an early adopter and after nearly 9 years but only 41k miles, my EV battery has degraded by 42%, rapid charging was free and road tax was free, when i bought it. Since then battery environment control has improved and batteries have more or less doubled in size. This has meant less degradation rate, particularly in cycle use per mile because of the larger batteries but we still have Teslas on autotrader like a 20 reg model with 25% degradation after only 55 k miles certified battery capacity. So it has not been eliminated, only slowed. There is still time degradation as well as cycle degradation on all EV's. The very fact that even though the UK motor industry has spent £3.5 billion on promoting EV's and reducing their sale price, pre registering new cars and selling them to hide sales figures, to satisfy the electric vehicle mandate deceiptfully, has still not made them a popular purchase because they are an inferior product to what we already have, particularly for towing and long distance driving, having generally less than a third of the range of a diesel and nowhere near the towing weight capacity. I still have my EV but the wife now uses it as a home charger tethered shopping trolley, with the range it still has left. We also have two ice cars, one diesel, one petrol and a newish diesel campervan, as well as two high power motorbikes, one brand new. I am 66 now, so they should see me through. As for everybody else only driving electric cars, don't count your chickens. The Reform party will stop all this madness dead and they are certain to get in before the 2030 dead line. Remember where you heard it first ! Remember good products are sold on features, bad products are sold on price, therefore an EV is a bad degrading and severely depreciating product and should be avoided at all costs.
don't count your chickens, reform will cancel all this madness when they get in before 2030. Remember where you heard it first
@LeftCoastEV you sound like a dictator removing freedom of choice ?
I thought the whole point of having an electric car was that you could charge it at home and save money, if your driving to a fast charger and its -30 outside that better be one fast charger.
Haha you are very funny love it. This is a test to prove to people like you that electric cars don’t die in winter like ICE cars do and they can still fast charge even with a frozen battery. I have a home charger too but the point of this video is different. Guess you missed that point.
@@LeftCoastEV Whats the range in -30 temperatures compared to manufacturers figures ?
452km max range as per manufacturer spec. About 30% range loss at -30.
