    I think we can all agree the solutions to SA suck. I am disgusted. I tried CPAP about 5 year ago, lasted few months. It was terrible. well speel is ify, sometimes its fine something like other night i seemed to wake up 50 times and pee so many times as well. I saw joe rogan tout a device, but I can't find its offered anywhere ( his clip is in youtube). why not? he says it changed his life?. I know a local detist for $600 uses lasers to trim off back off your throat to stop snoring, that may help with SA who knows? Bottom line, why can't we have a better system , better info.

      Wearing a night guard (one-sided) should not affect your jaw muscles or positioning. Night guards are mainly used to protect your teeth from clenching or grinding and relax your jaw muscles to alleviate muscle tension, headaches, etc. A night guard will probably not assist with snoring OR sleep apnea, as it will not change your airway opening or provide more oxygen to your body.

      Hi The Sleep Apnea Appliance costs $2500 with NO insurance applied. We do, however, file medical insurance for our patients. Some medical insurance will cover 100%, but it varies widely based on your individual policy. We absolutely recommend pre-authorization with medical insurance PRIOR to fabricating the appliance, so every patient knows exactly what they may owe before committing to treatment. The appliance is very effective for almost everyone, however there are many factors that must be evaluated. This is why it is important to seek treatment from a trained professional who can direct your treatment based on your individual symptoms and diagnosis. CPAPs are definitely effective as well, but, like you, most patients don't enjoy it!

      @@Grateful4lfe There are definitely Medicare providers who offer the appliance. We are not an in-network provider with Medicare because we primarily deal with dental insurance. If you find an in-network Medicare provider, Medicare should cover 100%, but you would need to get a pre-authorization prior to fabricating the appliance. We are only "In-Network" with Blue Cross Blue Shield due to reimbursement rates in South Carolina. They will generally cover 80% of the cost, but that also depends on deductibles and individual policy differences. That is why we pre-authorize EVERY appliance, so there are no surprises for our patients. Every state will vary in their Medicare reimbursement rates...some are much more beneficial.

      @peninsuladentistry1518 Год назад

      @@Grateful4lfe There is no "guarantee" that the appliance will work, but it has proven very effective. The effectiveness is determined by the individual patient's diagnosis and level of sleep apnea. There are some cases that truly require CPAP treatment, but that is based on each individual and their diagnosis. It is important to have a professional sleep test read by a Board Certified Sleep Physician, so your provider knows how to best treat your condition.

    I've used it and these do work, but there are side effects. The bottom jaws is held forward and exerts pressure on your top teeth. This over time will change the angle of your teeth. I have thin enamel and micro cracks in my teeth. This could lead to breaking my front teeth, which is a big concern. Just be aware... As a dentist I feel like this should have been mentioned in the video. 🤔

    • @peninsuladentistry1518
      @peninsuladentistry1518 Год назад

      This is incorrect. The appliance works like a retainer. Your teeth should NOT shift while wearing a full coverage professional appliance. As stated, the appliance does advance your jaw during sleep which can cause an adjustment time after waking to restore your "muscle memory". There are "AM Aligners" to help restore a patient's muscle memory after removing the appliance. Your teeth do not move...your jaw muscles adapt to the positioning during sleep and must re-adapt to normal function after waking. This is why it is important to seek treatment from a professional who will monitor you during treatment. By the way, this is all covered in depth at our complimentary consult visit.✌

    I go to great trouble to minimize my exposure to plastics. I don’t drink or eat from plastic containers, I don’t store my food in plastic, I rarely eat anything from a can since they are lined with plastic. The chemicals that produce compounds in the body that mimic estrogen and block the absorption of healthy estrogen are one of many concerns. What material do you make your appliance from and is it free of toxins? Since this would spend a minimum of 8 hrs in a person’s mouth every night this is monumentally important. I have sleep apnea and would like to try a device like this but I am loathe to do so because of possible exposure to toxins. Any light you could shed on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

      Most appliances are made of an acrylic. I'm not sure you could find one (or a CPAP/BiPAP) that did not have rubber, acrylic, or plastic in its construction. The Optisleep appliance is, however, fabricated from a solid block of acrylic rather than mixing a powder and liquid. This eliminates porosities that can harbor bacteria and also limits any "leaching" of chemicals. It is, however, made from a material that may not work for you. The health benefits of treating sleep apnea are very important, but you certainly must weigh your decisions for treatment.

    My apnea is so severe, I use both an appliance and a BiPap. Didn't know what a good night's sleep was before that. Also my lower teeth are now ahead of my bottom teeth because my jaw juts forward. A consequence of using an appliance for years. My dentist wanted to give me some exercise to bring my jaw back. I refused. I have no problem eating on either side. I have no pain. I breathe better. And you want me to exercise a few times everyday so that I can willfully and actively take away a positive. No thanks. At a later visit he ask my permission to use me anonymously ( my x-rays and imaging ) as a case study for that reason. He was presenting at some dentistry event. Don't think he did though. never mentioned it again.

      Richard, You are correct. There are circumstances (especially in severe sleep apnea cases) where an oral appliance will be used in conjunction with a CPAP or BiPAP to increase the effectiveness of both. This is definitely alot for patients wear while sleeping, but it is preserving your health! Also, there are aligners that can be worn and/or exercises that can be performed to realign your bite quicker in the morning. Most patients choose not to use them , but they are effective. The appliances (if made well) do not shift your teeth - they actually work as a retainer. BUT...your jaw muscle memory will be different in the morning because of the positioning while sleeping. It is also important, as noted by many, to continue visits to your dentist to ensure proper occlusion and effectiveness of your sleep appliance.

I had went from failed full mask bipap to the appliance for my severe apnea. I wore my realigner religiously every morning then covid hit and I didn't get to a dentist or my dental sleep Dr for almost 2 years. Then I realized that my teeth shifted, chewing and elimination difficulties, chipped teeth. Now I'm a 65 y.o. with full braces and had no other choice to revert back...now on nasal cpap. The apparatus is soft on my nose and actually comfortable once workable settings were obtained. Please know that your bite has to be followed regularly by your dentist to observe it there is shifting of the teeth if you don't want expensive consequences years later after a dental appliance. There are 3 adults at my orthodontist that are there because of the shifting bite from the dental sleep oral appliance.

However, it is a medical device (DME) and can be filed to health insurance. It should ALWAYS be pre-authorized prior to fabrication, so the patient knows exactly how much insurance may cover. We have many patients who receive 80% coverage (i.e. $2000) from their insurance company....however, this varies with every insurance policy...hence the need for pre-authorization. The appliance should be FDA approved for treating sleep apnea, and, unfortunately, FDA approval drives the lab costs and overall price.

      Hi Steven! The Oral Sleep Apnea Appliance does not "deliver" air like a CPAP machine. The Oral Appliance actually opens a patient's airway to allow more airflow naturally. I like to use the analogy of trying to drink water through a coffee straw (CPAP/Untreated Apnea Patient) vs, drinking through a garden hose (Oral Appliance Therapy). The CPAP is effective because it "delivers" pressurized air....but it does not open or change the patient's airway. The Oral Appliance Therapy is effective because it open the airway and allows greater airflow/oxygen through normal breathing without hoses and pressure. It also works wonders with snoring cessation!

      We cannot provide treatment to patients who are not in our area because it is important to follow your condition. I would, however, recommend that you search for a dentist in the Philippines who practices Dental Sleep Medicine. Hopefully there is someone in your area who can help! We are happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have...even if we can't treat you directly. Thanks for your interest!!

      @@amiram8024 The appliance we use most is called an "Optisleep"...however, there are many different appliances that are effective. Your clinician will choose the correct appliance based on your individual needs. You should ask if they provide "Oral Appliance Therapy" for sleep apnea or ask if they provide a "Mandibular Advancement Appliance". If they provide appliance therapy, they will understand those terms.

Although they say it's benefiting me I don't feel it. So idk. Actually tho if I don't use it I can really tell it so I quesd it is but I hate it.

      i find it ironic that while some people tolerate cpap therapy with no issues, others do not. maybe we live in the world we create in our mind and constantly reminding ourselves we HATE something may actually reinforce preconceived notions? thinking positive may go a long way to help. i mean, a runny nose seems easier to tolerate than life threatening oxygen deprivation which may impair cognitive ability... eventually encouraging dementia? if a runny nose is the worst thing that happens to us... we lead a charmed life :) i wish u good luck

      @@debraschepers9381 We offer an alternative to your CPAP. CPAPs are effective...when used. Unfortunately, many people cannot tolerate their CPAP and would like an alternative. Our Oral Appliance Therapy is an excellent alternative to CPAP therapy - easy to use, less invasive, and much easier to take on your travels. If you have a CPAP that is working for you, I would not recommend switching unless you decide you just won't wear the CPAP on a regular basis.
