looks like a strip mine site. no pit footage to tell what was being mined. i assume by the lack of active heavy equipment traffic that it has been recently shut down. otherwise weeds would be growing all over the dirt mine roads after a year. im also assuming it isnt in the western US. reason i say this is because there are Environmental Protective regulations that require every mining company to put aside a percentage of its profit into a reclaimation fund so the topsoil can be returned to a "like original" state, including with native (non-noxious) plant species reintriduced and animal habitats reformed. i live near several older open-pit "strip mines" and the old pit areas are refilled with the overburden and then a layer of the set-aside native topsoil spread over that and landscaped. then native grasses/plants are re-planted. the native wildlife never really leaves. the land is "reclaimed"...usually 50 years after the mineral deposits are mined from beneath the surface. thats how it works in the mines begun since the 1950s in the western US l, anyway.

im not all that widely experienced in scifi dystopian "paleofuturissic" cityscapes, but i get the feeling ive seen these before somewhere. the world in the 3rd-person shooter, WH40K Space Marine seems like tuenartwork uere, but unruined and abandonned. Masamune Shirow's dead cityscapes in "Badside" where Deunan and Briareos live prior to Olymous picking them up in the Apleseed GNs resembles these places.as.well,.except.those places are ruins as well. you could say sections of Coruscant in the Srar Wars universe (or Nar Shadaa) seems to be similar. i guess Blade Runner's concept art is also similar, but more vibrant with life...and polution. Following that, Metropolos, the recent Anime, seems based on similar hugeness of scale for no reason but hugeness and ego. but i like these more. there is no pre-existing drama evident, so i am free to imagine exploring the city in a jet-packed Mando armor suit...or Space Marine power armor...or a mech. architecturally, one imagines the logical scale and placement of these structures as required by some...gigantic reason. why are they so spread out? or so big? most villages, towns, and cities are based on man-sized dwellings and roads. but these seem 5x or 10x the scale of typical Earth cities. were they converted factories for gigantic mecha (WH40K Titans) or "drydock" for space battle ships...and then repurposed for housing and shops to support all the population (like China's failing Mega City idea) a millenia later... just to eventually be abandoned, like the real Japanese "Battleship Island"? in reality, the structural strength required to construct such enormous buildings would be near impossible to achieve...at least with Earth's gravity, natural resources, and economy. pretty cool looking tho.
