Aleksei Khaniutin. Piatachok (1987)
Director Khaniutin memorialized the struggles of rural migrants in Moscow, where they were driven in their quest for a better life. He also showed how their departure was changing village life. The final scene, provided here, is a sad commentary on the decline of rural culture. While a Muscovite visiting from his native village leads the traditional wedding procession with his accordion, younger village folk gather around a tape player and do the dances that they crave from the big cities.

Lev Kuleshov. The Great Consoler (1933)
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.10 лет назад
Kuleshov cleverly created a film that seems to satirize the "varnishing of reality" that RAPP vilified, yet he also used his scenario to continue his experiments with film form, and to indulge his well-known taste for Americanism. The film takes place in America in 1899, and idepicts Bill Porter (based on American writer O. Henry), who is the great consoler of the title, in prison. His writing ...
A. Mishurin. The Queen of the Filling Station (1963)
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.10 лет назад
The heroine of this comedy has abandoned her dream of being a ballerina, and has begun a new phase of her life as a filling station attendant. In this scene we see her disastrous first day on the job. The remainder of the film sees her transforming herself into a masterful attendant, bringing joy and inventiveness to her work and her mostly male customers.
Stalin Speaks on Red Square (1941)
Просмотров 47 тыс.10 лет назад
Stalin's stirring appearance on Red Square for the November 7 1941 anniversary celebration, when the German troops stood a short distance from Moscow, gave people faith in a seemingly hopeless moment that not only Moscow would withstand the invaders, just as it had withstood and destroyed Napoleon in 1812, but that the Soviet Union would survive as well.
Mark Donskoi. The Rainbow (1944)
Просмотров 3,6 тыс.10 лет назад
Rainbow depicts life in a Nazi-occupied village at the beginning of World War II. The Germans are above nothing, not even the slaughter of small children, to break the spirit of their Soviet captives. In this scene we see the confrontation of sisters representing opposites of Soviet womanhood: Pusya, who has betrayed her soldier-husband for the German commandant; and Olga, the village school te...
Mikhail Romm. The Russian Question (1948)
Просмотров 2 тыс.10 лет назад
This movie, made from a Konstantin Simonov play, was one of the subtler works of the Cold War era. It showed a natural affinity between two nations that had been corrupted by the American yellow press and the power of capitalist money. The picture played on a still-living affection for the wartime ally while presenting the standard government line. In this scene, the honest journalist Smith str...
Lev Kuleshov. Extraordinary Adventures of Mr. West in the Land of the Bolsheviks (1924)
Просмотров 9 тыс.10 лет назад
Lev Kuleshov scored one of Soviet cinema's first successes with this story about a straightlaced American who comes to Soviet Russia and is disabused of his prejudices about the socialist state. Kuleshov, inventor of many of the action techniques that would become the hallmark of early Soviet cinema, uses all the tricks in his wizard's bag on this chase through Moscow.
Kira Muratova. Brief Encounters (1967)
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.10 лет назад
Muratova pushed beyond the limits of sexual honesty in this film, starring Vysotsky as Maksim, a geologist who has abandoned his city life and wife for the freedom of the expedition. He has traded his comforts and lovely wife for the freedom of the mosquito-ridden (and politics-ridden) open field. His wife Valentina (played by Muratova herself), is a model Soviet woman who is imprisoned in her ...
Sergei Loznitsa. Blokada (2005)
Просмотров 12 тыс.10 лет назад
«Blokada» is a documentary made with silent footage from the years 1941-1944. This clip shows Soviet citizens trudging through the bridges and streets of Leningrad and boarding the train that will transport them to Soviet-held territory on the opposite shore of Lake Ladoga. 1.3 million citizens were evacuated from Leningrad along this "Road of Life," mostly by foot.
The Experimentator (1985)
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.10 лет назад
Soviet rock was born in Leningrad, and it came to maturity in apartment performances for a chosen few who appreciated the music. Here Kostya Kinchev, lead singer of the group ALISA and soon to be a genuine Russian rock star, and the innovative musician Sergei Kuriokhin, jam in a cramped apartment. Kinchev had already learned the performance skills that would serve him well when large stages ope...
Aleksandr Dovzhenko. Michurin (1947)
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.10 лет назад
Starring Grigorii Belov, Aleksandra Vasilieva, Fedor Grigoriev. Music by Dmitri Shostakovich. Dovzhenko labored hard to make his movie into a tribute to nature, but censorship and the ideological needs of the Lysenko clique made this impossible. Michurin became in the movie a mouthpiece for Russian nationalism, vernalization, and the triumph of Soviet science. Here he shares his slow process of...
Projector of Perestroika (1986)
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.10 лет назад
The spirit of reform reached the Soviet mass media almost immediately after Gorbachev announced the policy, and journalists remained on the forefront of the movement, often a bit ahead of it. A TV news program that riveted viewers with its revelations of official corruption and incompetence was «Projector of Perestroika», launched in 1986, whose producers spoke openly of the tensions that the n...
Herbert Rappaport. Cheremushki (1962)
Просмотров 8 тыс.10 лет назад
This clip is from 1962 musical (operetta) «Cheremushki» with music by Dmitrii Shostakovich. "New" Cheremushki was the once rural site outside the boundaries of Moscow that became the newest model housing development of the capital, and prototype (some would say cookie cutter) for new communities across the Soviet Union. The movie itself is a hoot a fantasy within a fantasy, the dream of a coupl...

Is this covertly written by Ayn Rand to undermine the Idea collectivism and emphasize the need for extraordinary virtuous individuals who make the society function despite all other factors?

Slavic women are the most beautiful in the world. Here in Florida we used to have lots of women from russia and eastern europe come to work in the summers. It was not uncommon to see girls waiting tables or working ae maids that looked like they just stepped off of a fashion runway. Very nice and modest as well.

I remember listening to a podcast a few years ago where a historian discussed some peanut headed American communists that traveled to magnitogorsk to build the city. They quickly realised communism was a raw deal as they shivered in their unheated shipping container homes and lived on bread and water.

Man!, he sure got around a lot. Think he ever made it out to visit, oh, someplace like, say, the Ipatiev House in Ekaterinburg? I wonder if, in that bulbous head of his, there was ever one consideration of the cruelty of ordering the murder of four young women, their newly pubescent brother, and his small dog? How did that kind of unthinkable brutality contribute to the Workers' Paradise. I understand why Lenin had a mean streak: just look at Krupskya's face, like a horse---that had to have made him mean just waking up to that day after day. But the depth of his mean streak, primarily in the Romanov murders . . . how is it accounted for? They told me that the philosopher, Betrand Russell, met him once and was very offended by his personality---that all he could talk about (Lenin, that is) were the people he was going to wreak vengeance on and how he wanted to string 'em all up. Partiya Lenina?---humanity is better off without that trash.
