Several sources trace the origins of this song back to the 16th century Irish melody 'Aisling Og Fihr' (A Young Man's Dream). In 1918 the song's lyricist, Englishman Frederic Weatherly, penned *alternative lyrics* for a man to sing and called it 'Eily Dear'. His original 1913 lyrics for 'Danny Boy' were meant for a woman to sing. Of all the great versions of this classic that I've heard, through 6 decades of listening to music, this one stands out: ruclips.net/video/zc41L1-KcG0/видео.html

Of all people the Vienna Boys Choir sing a good version of both. They are on RUclips.
Mum's favourite
A very sad song. Through sorrow the heart is made better!
Summer is gone and the flowers are dying, our first real cool spell. This is always such a sad time for me. The onset of winter
So beautiful. I can never hear that song without crying. Thank you.
Beautiful Lady- you sang that better than angels could have !!!
I wish she had sung the second verse as well; it's my favorite.
They didn’t sing all the lyrics, nice version though
I was in a busy, noisey Manchester pub. We got talking to a stranger, a musician who had his insrument with him. I asked him to play it. No lyrics the whole place went quiet. I said it's the only song that can do that in this country. He said it has the same affect all over the world.
Thank you!
the tune Londonderry Air .. rescued from the mists of time .. some hailed as the greatest tune ever ..the words .. that stuck Danny Boy .. appears to be a mothers' lament .. the last and youngest boys of 3 gone to war .. she laments he is still alive .. will he survive the war? will come back before she dies .. she is dying but holding on to see his face once more..
Not a _lot_ of investigating here. I'm curious where Weatherly - basically, an English lawyer who lived near Bath! - got the inspiration for the poem.
A very nice voice but I was hoping to hear more of a story.
i am learning this a my song in school i ove this version well done kathy
Wait, that’s it?
❤
So far this is the third version of Danny Boy's history and origins that I have heard. I believe a bunch of music scholars need to get together and trace the real history of it and make an official history for this beautiful song.
Lovely. A great moment in my life was watching my neighbor Mr. Murphy sing Danny Boy to his 6 week old son Danny being held next to him while my Mother played that beautiful tune.
Thank you so much for explaining the history behind it, your voice is very beautiful, I'm trying to learn all the lyrics now because I sing this song to my son but I don't know all the words and I have neurodegenerative brain disease, Fahr's... So my shorts are memory is really bad, And because of spasmatic dysphonia my voice is even worse😂😂 but he sees me really trying and I'm actually remembering it, it's like I'm studying for a test but this song is so beautiful and spine chilling in the most beautiful way , it's what I do at night before I go to sleep, it's been 2 weeks and I have the first part down almost, doesn't seem like a lot of progress but it feels like a whole lot.❤❤❤❤❤❤
Them most beautiful endition is by Roy Orbison. My Dad was Irish and called my brother Danny
My dad used to sing this song when I was little and growing up. He sang it beautifully. I still can't listen to the song without thinking of him. And crying.
One of my earliest memories was of my mom, singing this song to me. I don't know why...but any time I ever heard it again it would bring tears to my eyes, like you. Like right now. Thanks for sharing that.
I Love ❤️ Irish Song,s and music 🎶 too ❤❤

What BeautifulSong Danny Boy ❤❤❤

Je pleure les yeux fermés
An Irish melody with English lyrics about a situation in Scotland.
Say what you like about the English, they DO write a decent lyric 😄
You had to go and sing it. Now I'm crying. Damn you. Thank you.
I tough times such as at Europe's crisis in the 1910 years, people search comfort in old tunes.. the warmth of home. Of course the song was a success. Though old settlers had no electricity they stuck together.
the tune is called O Cahans lamant Written by hampson the blind harper
🍀
Whose ever right when it comes to disagreements about history?
Love this song too much.
You have a beautiful voice!
My mother's family was pure Irish and I was name after here Dad, Daniel Francis Sullivan. I have heard this song ever since I was a child and I still love it today. I know there are several interpretations of what the lyrics mean, but I am fond of the story that is it a dad sending his son off to war. I hope this get's played at my funeral.
Brava Chaty!
I learned that song when is was 2 , 3 4 yr old through my Granny, 56 now & it still swells my eye's.. I find myself walking the dog singing Danny boy to myself.
This has to be the best rendition of Danny Boy ever with the history behind the song. Thank you Cathy. 💚🇮🇪🍀
My son’s name is formally Daniel but he is known as Danny Boy. He believes the dong Danny Boy was written for him.
RIP Dad, see you soon, but not too soon. THanks my King for taking him into your arms.
Maybe the fiddler was an angel ;)
You made me cry, Cathy ❤️❤️❤️
I thought it was Londonderry.
My brother's name 'danny' my dad always used to sing it, dublin born.
It's from the Israel tribe of Dan who settled on the island 1000's of years ago.
Anonymous. That's a great way to get out of paying someone for getting rich & famous at their expense, eh?😮
What rich, propertied person from that time, would give a damn about an itinerant? They have made money out of him ever since. And that is all the landed classes cared about, my favourite version is the one by Sinéad O'Connor.
Cathy is very beautiful like the song she is singing.
