one of my dream bikes
..amazing...
I need another track day 👍
Excellent Shawn. Thanks for posting this on WG. In honour of this I was out on my Panther today too. Now, if I had a GTV................
Keeping a nice pace their boys and a couple of proper bikes.
Lovely bike and brilliant riding skills too, someone that actually knows how to change gear and does not just stamp it into the next one..
I wish there'd been some context - I'd love to know what road that was! This one hit home pretty good for me. I have a British single (though not an Ariel, as in the video) and I'm restoring a Cyclone....so it was a bit like chasing my bike with....my bike?
Beautiful restoration AND it runs well? Typical Shawn Doan understated mechanical perfection. :)
how can I contact you ?
this works
Wow; 2014 and now its 2019> still very enjoyable to watch. It is really as if I am on my own bike (Ariel '38, NG 350) and what a great weather. Only your microphone is cracking a bit, but still its great.
Nicely done! I particularly like the beginning and end shots. We don't see movement on running engines these days.
Pretty amazing being surrounded by snow. Do you run a smaller main jet to keep power at those high altitudes?
Power? where? ;) No, but it's not that high - 4300' or 1300 meters. But the main jet is probably too rich even at sea level. Not the stock carb so still sorting out the mixture.
Shawn Doan I'm from Australia so I assumed it was very high altitude to still have snow at the start of your summer. I put a lug in my exhaust pipe on my '36 Velocette for a wide band O2 sensor with AFR gauge. Definitely made tuning a new carb easier.
@@buncho888 I've seen a couple bikes with a O2 sensor readout - great solution. We're just below the 49th parallel so pretty far north and they get a lot of snow. Some years the road never opens.
Nice video!
Wonderful sound. Super bike - especially knowing the work you had to put into it to get it ready for the road. Thanks for posting.
Very nice video!
Gorgeous! Makes me very nostalgic for my old Triumph 3TA, which was great fun (but I've always wanted a Red Hunter).
Bellissimo! It seems to run real well, and not slowly! I very much enjoyed the video--it was like I was out for ride but without the chill.
Beautiful bike. How does it compare to the prewar Red Hunter?
The Hunter handles better and has better brakes. The GTV steering is very light, doesn't self center as well and seems a bit twitchy, but I've not rebuilt it yet. The rear suspension absorbs bumps very well so the bike is very comfortable. The GTV engine has a surprising amount of torque and pulls nearly as well as the Hunter at 3-4,000 rpm, but runs out of breath pretty fast. (though it is over-geared too) Guzzi advised riders not to exceed 4300 rpm so a good slogger.
Do you wear any black leather greaser biker jackets, leather chaps or Levi’s jeans in particular??
Beautiful sound.
Thanks for the ride. The bike runs well.
Terrific sound and it looks like it handles well. What year do you think is the best when choosing an Ariel Red Hunter?
Nice easy starter 👍
Great video, Shawn! That old bike zips right along.
Sounds good. How does it compare the Ariel red hunter? Are they both 500cc?
Both 500cc. Guzzi torque and acceleration is similar to Ariel up to about 50mph then Guzzi fades. Ariel handles better and has far better brakes.
Looks great, love the hairpin valve springs!
Really nice bike you got there!
My dad had one of these and took her wife to be to the lake district,(N England) on their honeymoon. Great bike and thanks for putting up the video, it gives great pleasure.
thats great! how was the ambient temperature? nice start - at the first kick!!!
Hey, nice video! seemed perfect at all. Good job.
Lovely - and not so very different to descendant Nuovo Falcone. Now you need a good long road trip.
This guy is living the dream! The motor sounds fantastic and we'll tuned. If I wasn't jealous something would be wrong here.
Lovely video. Beautiful scenery! You just need to have the speedo fixed.
Hi, it looks very like my speedo (Ariel 1938); it is fully mechanical with a governor and no damping (beautiful piece of engineering). Also no suspension in/around the speedo, nor on the bike itself; loads of vibrations. It is scary to watch, but fail to know what to about it.
Very enjoyable morning ride. I like the position chosen for the camera, it gave me a feeling that I was on the bike. Even the girder forks and that rigid frame felt like they were working hard! I presume that yours must be a late 30s bike, or is it late 40s? Whatever the vintage, it sounds like it's in great shape. Thanks for a very good ride video.
Funny you mention the hard working; I find the fork/rigid frame very easy to ride (no wobbly feeling) and together with the very low centre of gravity, very sharp/light in corner work (at relative low speeds, 55mph max). My bike (1938) has rubber mounted steering and integrated throttle 'in' the bar. In the video is the 'army' steering and the Amal levers (choke/ignition/exhaust) are short indicating also the mid to late 40's. Looks/sounds a nice bike and runs also nice/smooth (slightly quieter than mine)...
Thanks, Shawn. I've never been on the Ridge track. Now I know what the layout looks like.
That was exciting. Great video.
My old man has got a 1930's Red Hunter in bits - one of these days, when I have the time...
Doesn't get any better than this!
Nice Ride
could have a good old vointage road run there
you have a wonderful machine out there- Cheers, i have a Ariel Red hunter twin port with Telescopic suspension the vehicle is getting restored there are only 3 holes on the FUEL tank one is for the Fuel, the another one is a small one & the remianing is an another big one- can you pls tell me what these two HOLES aprt from the Fuel Filling are meant for? psl help
Hi Rahul. If your fuel tank has the panel like mine (or just the recess below it) the big hole on the right opposite the fuel filler is for the speedometer and it's cable. The smaller hole toward the back of the tank is for the oil pressure gauge and the small tube that comes up from the exhaust rocker box. Also a wire will come up through it for the "trouble light". Your tank panel should look very similar to the one on this bike.
Great run, Your PA speedo is not working. Nice bike.
Thanks! It was fun. As for the speedo - was watching the road and didn't notice! ;-)
Enjoyed your video. Great bike.
Reidar K Thanks! Would love to see pictures of your Sunbeam.
Hi Ray, Yes it is a GoPro strapped to my chest. The sound is poor because the microphone is picking it up through the case which also rubs on my jacket. They supplied a case with an open back that may have better sound, but I haven't tried it yet.
Well done Shawn. The Ariel sounds wonderful and is running very well. A great choice of road. Were you using a GoPro camera? Excellent! More posts please. Ray
