Late summer24 at Lobster Bay
This is the 1st post-Covid video but the area is the same as before - the beautiful landscape above/below the sea surface - enjoyed by the notorious freediver Annelie Pompe - as well as her water dog Doglas. These near sub-surface shots, again from the northern archipelago of Öckerö and Hönö islands outside the west coast city of Gothenburg, are catching all the natural beauty - so easily missed when diving too deep.

Annelie and her early freediving
Просмотров 1363 года назад
This video is really old, a real flashback. Freediving Annelie was just 17 years old - and the UV camera was heavy and analogue... Surprisingly, after a tedious digital coversion, the quality turned out to be quite ok. It shows the beautiful and rich submarine nature as it always has been, outside the Hönö island - in the Gothenburg northern archipelago of the Swedish west coast.
With Doglas to Burö
Просмотров 1193 года назад
Maybe this last freediving trip this year in late September has taken us to the wild island of Burö, in the norther archipelago outside the Swedish west coast city of Gothenburg. This also has been a day for Annelie's best friend - Doglas the Dog - to enjoy the always clear water outside this island.
Glimpses of Hönö undersea world

The northern archipelago environment outside Gothenburg is truly unique - not at least, there is a huge contrast between the beautiful but barren nature of the stone landscape - and the rich and shifting micro-environments just a few meters below the sea level. And as usual best accessible by freediving...

This is another flashback, ten years ago, while the DV minicasette & the 720x576 format was still going strong. These near sub-surface shots, again from the northern archipelago of Öckerö and Hönö islands outside the west coast city of Gothenburg, are catching the beautiful play of lights and waves - so easily missed when diving deep. To Stora Oset lighthouse!
Просмотров 3144 года назад
This late summer undersea visibility was poor close to the shore - so we went to the nearby famous lighthouse Stora Oset (after Annelie cleaned off thoroughly all the barnacles...) Surprisingly, the visibility was not much better and we could only see the dominant species this year - sea stars partying on the huge population of blue mussels.
Submarine Hönö & Ockerö, summer 2003

This is a flashback from year 2003. Very different camera (with a DV minicasette) 720/576 format...but the same beautiful submarine landscapes and flora/fauna in the Northern Sea archipelago outside the city of Gothenburg. This video also includes some one-of-a-lifetime encounters... the mink just moving up from a dive in front of the camera - or a the large eel, almost non-existent nowadays. A...

The last summer was a bit chilly even by early July….but not for Doglas the water dog, the best friend of Annelie Pompe - the famous freediver. This day was a pefect day to go on with some water training….
By SUP to ShamWan, Lamma Island (南丫島)

Most of the shore of ShamWan in the southern part of Lamma Island (南丫島 or PokLiu,博寮) is protected from the direct impact by the open sea waves. A lot of fish can be seen by late spring in some selected areas - like this one, reachable environment-friendly by a paddleboard and enjoyed by freediving.
Annelie in Lobster Bay - locally a veritable fish soup

A summer 2018 flashback....one day when the sunshine, the water temperature, the visibility and the vind direction were all right. This day at the Lobster Bay (Hummerviken) on Öckerö, one of the most beautiful islands in the northern archipelago outside Gothenburg, offered a great experience of colors - and in some local areas a fish population far beyond what is normal. Annelie Pompe had her O...

Magic submarine night and day at Lamma 南丫島 Pok Liu Chau (博寮洲)
Просмотров 796 лет назад
The southern coastal area of Pok Liu Chau (Lamma Island 南丫島) 博寮洲 outside Hong Kong has a wild nature and magnificent natural sceneries, in great contrast to the mega-city environment, just about half an hour of a ferry trip. This video shows some night time and early morning underwater life. Free-diving is the best way as usual to enjoy the underwater world there.
Lamma Island, Pok Liu Chau (博寮洲) - so many big sea cucumbers!
Просмотров 616 лет назад
This spring fairly chilly water on the sea side of Lamma Island - Pok Liu Chau (博寮洲) has not been full of life as usual - but seems to have provided good breeding conditions for sea cucumber. Never seen so many in one area like this time. By snorkeling and freediving, it has been easy to overlook a large bottom areas - and they have been everywhere.
South Pok Liu (南丫島) Lamma Chau coast

The southern part of 南丫島 (Lamma Island), Hong Kong, is not accessible but by arduous hiking or by boat. But the trip is rewarding - the wild coastal nature is in total contrast to what you may expect of the Hong Kong city environment. So is the submarine life and nature - as usual best experienced by freediving.

Was this filmed in June? Good to see you uploading a underwater video of HK again! It looks as if it was filmed in winter judging by the abundance of seaweed.
you are right, early in the year, in early April...I am always late to make the movies after the video has been shot
@@robertpompe3913 Ah, I see. Keep exploring new places and record your underwater adventures!
Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you!!
How long did you swim ? What is mm of the suit ?
Just around the harbor bay little bit....20 minutes, bc of the 3 mm suit
??
Do you still use the same camera, and is your camera waterpoof?
I've swam all the way to that island you see near Shek O, Ng Fun Chau island before. The undersea area near the shores was covered in mostly sea urchins with not much things to see, and I only found one lump of hard coral growing on the northwestern part of the island.
Same experience...not much to see around Shek O. Lamma (Pok Liu Chau) not too bad, there are some bay areas, protected from direct wave impact - suddenly the undersea environment can change quickly - a lot of corals etc. If you plan any future ventures u can get in touch, WhatsApp 95790497.
If only I had a kayak to get to these islands..You're lucky to have one. So usually I have to resort to swimming to such places, like I did in 2017 when I swam to the 3 islands in Hoi Ha Wan.
Oh, I only have a small, inflatable SUP, can be used as a kayak - but not very convenient. It must have been a big swim for you in HHW....not afraid of sharks?
@@robertpompe3913 nope. Sharks are rare and I don't expect to encounter one. And I saw other people swimming that day, but only in places with corals.
Yeah, maybe the shark fear exaggerated...
@@robertpompe3913 so what kind of camera do you use, and do you waterproof it or is it already waterproof?
an extremely simple one, Sony HDR-AS10 (includes waterproof housing)....
Also interesting to see how you were brave enough to swim (alone?) at night. Sad that there weren't any corals but there were a lot of Tetraclita japonica and Oysters on the submerged boulders.
Oh, thank you, do not know anyone else ready to go to this place + camp(LoL) . Yes, a lot of nasty mosquitos... But I did not swim out, nasty feeling as well when totally dark - I checked out this place before so I know the undersea topography.
You should try exploring and camping more in Sai Kung along with the outlying islands. I'd like to see videos of it. And perhaps the far northeast of Hong Kong, there's plenty of remote places with corals. Well, I wouldn't mind camping in remote places like this, it's just I would prefer places with more reason to stay overnight in, e.g. remoteness, more biodiversity, or places good for stargazing with less light pollution. Anyway, what do you think of Typhoon Mangkhut?
you are right, Sai Kung can be more interesting, larger submarine bio-diversity, better visibility conditions... but also more difficult to reach the different places without a boat or car, everything takes then more time in Sai Kung...
@@robertpompe3913 Yeah. I'm just saying since your videos have only been about Lamma Island recently.
Did you camp alone? And that's a lot of nasty mosquitoes at 1:30! I love how you filmed the thunderstorms and showed the changes after an hour later.
Nice video! Great music
Fyren vid den röda pilen är Ärtholmen. Hönö Huvud ligger på ön utanför Ärtholmen.
I think you should upload all your videos in the highest quality possible, if possible.
I'm puzzled by the biodiversity of corals and the old age of corals which are found in this area. It makes me wonder why it is only limited to this area and not other nearby places in Hoi Ha Wan, since I would assume the environment would be the same or similar.
Shoals of fishes aren’t necessary or strictly associated with corals in Hong Kong from my experience. I've observed shoals of small fishes nibbling off bare boulders without any corals nearby in D'aguilar peninsula as well as other localities.
Another great video. Those 2 encrusting coral species at 3:30 and 3:54 in the video are often found in seashores exposed to open water from my experience (places that are subjected to strong waves). They're soft and appear to be boneless. I'm not even sure if they're corals because of that, perhaps I'm gravely mistaken.
Hi there - uploaded Another 南丫島 video, hope you like it as well.
Why are your videos sooooo good? And yet there's hardly any views or likes. The high-contrast morning sky looked so nice. You even showed us a boulder with Quartz veins at 0:34 in the video. And that's a peculiar looking coral at 3:00. I really have to thank you for documenting all those marine creatures, especially corals in places few have been to, or are familiar with. This is some very useful educational information.
Lots of sponges but no corals as I expected since I'm guessing this was filmed on the shores of Tai Ngam Hau which faced open ocean. I've also seen a fish trap of similar design in SilverStrand in 3:30 in the video.
I don't know where exactly this is but I could tell it was filmed on the western side of Lamma island, on a southeastern-facing coast. It is remarkable to see that corals existing in an area which is technically facing open ocean.
I really enjoyed this video. Thumbs up!
Ah yes, those sea urchins and sea cucumbers are omnipresent across Hong Kong's waters. It's not unusual to see huge numbers of them from my experience from different locations.
Yay, you're alive with your latest video! You should really make more videos like these on various other places with corals in Hong Kong.
... where are all the fish? I'd expect a lot more with that kind of coral population.
relevant question - but the water is too cold (believe it or not...) at that time of the year, some months later when the water is 23 - 25 C, there is a lot of fish.
beautiful shot, you must have stayed overnight there, it is so early!
you are right....I had my tent there
just uploaded Another 南丫島 video - hope u may like it...maybe yr Mongolia friend also interested.
Well, ou can have a look at the two most recent videos from that area. If you swim from the very tip of the peninsula back in the direction towards Sai Kung Town there is a lot of interesting spots. But again, the visibility must be good enough.
I visited this area last year: www.google.com.hk/maps/@22.3639531,114.2733956,89m/data=!3m1!1e3 But the visibility was bad and I could not find corals in the same lively density as shown in your video, but I have found all of the species that were featured in your video. The corals didn't look too healthy to me as I recall many of them were fractured or only partially alive. Are you saying there's also corals to be found on the shoreline between the beaches and the tip of the peninsula? I wouldn't expect any corals on seashores that are facing open waters.
I also went to the exact spot you told me to go on google maps and I only found a few isolated patches of corals. Overall I wasn't sure if I had passed through the exact same area featured in your video, but I'd love to. Because I believe such places should be designated as protected marine parks and I would love to see corals that were as abundant as shown in your video.
the best area is if you enter the water at the southern end of the long sandy beach there. You can see corals - but right, there are only some few best locations. And the visibility must be good - at least 3-5 meters, not always the case....
Thanks. A lot of clips to put together....
Could you give a link from google maps showing the exact location of the dive site?
This is what I get, best case: www.google.com.hk/maps/@22.3629186,114.2747135,18.97z (bc do not want to let Google determine my location....)
It's fine, that answers it. Well strange, I was just there recently(in that location you shown on the map) and that's not what I saw so I'm utterly confused now.
What about the southernmost beach? www.google.com.hk/maps/@22.3609155,114.2765181,161m/data=!3m1!1e3 Is there anything to see there?
You have done a great job with this video.
you are certainly right, there was some confusion when translating from Swedish. We will change the name....
Where are the sea nattles i only see lion's mane jellyfish
Which brand is the wetsuit?
That is a Elios suit!
baie mooi
Would you mind to tell me where is the location? It's "Pak Sha Chau"? or "Sharp Island"? or somewhere between them? Thanks :>!
Arthur Yung Hi, it is from the sea-side shore of Pak Sha Chau - you can see Sharp Island from there
Thanks! Your video is so attractive..... I really want to visit that place and have a look. How did u go there? As I know, there's no public transportation to Park Sha Chau. You took ship to Sharp Island and swim to Park Sha Chau?
Arthur Yung I rented a kayak (50 HKD/day), it takes about 20-25 min to go there. And a good body exercise too, haha
Got it, many thanks! Good diving :D
Hello! A still better video posted today if interested....happy freediving year 2015

nice , and music too
COOL vid! How long are you able to stay in the water with that wetsuit?
Thank you! Yeah, you need that kind of house to be willing to dip yourself into the water in January....
Wow! House just in front of the sea, wetsuit in the house and hop! Here u go, 5 mts and in the sea! Fantastic. Compliments. The vid is really nice and the music perfect. Goodbye!
