I got a ticket from a rookie NM state police officer back in 2011 when I drove out to Albuquerque to see my Dad who was dying. On the way back to Alabama I was driving on I-40 east and had Cruise set at 70 in the right lane. There was a white car coming up fast behind me as we topped a hill. There was a trooper heading west bound and he hit his breaks and I told my wife that he just got that car behind us. Next thing I know the trooper is behind me pulling me over as the car that had been gaining on me before topping the hill continued on. The officer did a right side approach to my wife's window and asked me to come back to his cruiser. Upon going back to his cruiser, he tells me he clocked me at 82 in a 75. While I'm absolutely sure he clocked the car behind me, it doesn't matter. I paid that driver's ticket and had no way to prove I wasn't speeding. Looking back, I don't think the officer did it on purpose, I just think he didn't know what the hell he was doing. Well thank God for technology, I don't drive into another state now without front / rear video recorded with GPS speed on display along with printable reports showing speed history. Traffic fines are big business for most states and definitely for a poor state like NM. Protect yourself , while most officers have a high level of integrity outside of traffic enforcement, they are under high pressure to produce revenue for the state. Just a matter of time before you encounter one of them. Doesn't really matter if you're speeding or not. If they write you, it's up to you to prove you were not speeding. NM is one of those states that offer the penalty assessment so you can either agree to pay the fine or return for a court date. In my case it wasn't worth driving back 1300 miles to fight a $75 ticket. Again traffic enforcement is big business and officers will do whatever they need to do to make those numbers !!! All I know is it's impossible to have the cruise set at 70 going up hill and be clocked at 82 !!! I had gotten a lot of speeding tickets when I was younger and deserved every damn one of them but when you get one when you weren't speeding or breaking the law in any way it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth !!
