Winter Backpacking on Maine's Appalachian Trail
Join Ryan and Adam as they take on a rugged 14-mile stretch of Maine’s Appalachian Trail, from South Arm Road in Andover to Route 17 at the iconic Height of Land in Oquossoc. With approximately 5,000 feet of total elevation gain, this trek showcases the challenges of early-season hiking in New England.
From icy ledges and deep snow to mud, water runoff, swollen stream crossings, and countless blowdowns, the trail offers a true test of endurance and preparation. This hike also serves as vital training for their ambitious February 2025 expedition: a winter traverse of the 100-Mile Wilderness. 100 Mile Wilderness Maine
Просмотров 62 месяца назад
Here's the gear I plan to bring with me for a mid-October hike of the 100 Mile Wilderness on Maine's Appalachian Trail. I am preparing for a winter attempt of the 100 Mile Wilderness in late February of 2025. I plan to track and save this trial hike on my GPS for later reference this winter.
What kind of sleaping bag would you recommend for this time period?
@@audiosaurus6511 I used a Kelty Lightyear Down Bag rated for 25 Fahrenheit. It was comfortable enough and kept me warm in Mid October.
Thank you. Some unexpected challenges, they make it more exciting. I have taken plastic bags to put over boots, and even have taken off boots and waded. Yes, that's cold but better than the peril of wet boots and feet in bad cold conditions, which would take time to stop and dry out.
@@me-ev3kz great tip! A trash bag on each leg would be useful and effective for stream crossings I’d imagine 🙂
Quite the haul! Congratulations!
Thanks so much!
