I started a new job a month ago, and I'm trying to figure out if my boss is a micromanager or if I'm overreacting. My former boss at my old organization is now my coworker (she helped me get a job here), and she told me sometimes it can feel like we're being micromanaged because our boss might not have enough of her own work to do.

I work as a subcontractor. The head of the program we work for feels like he is the supreme expert on all things and nobody knows more than him. I was at a job site and basically proved that a piece of equipment was causing the chronic issue we have been seeing. This guy went on to say "that part is not broken". I asked him for the specs on the part in question. He gave them to me and I showed him test data showing that the part has failed terribly. I asked him to genuinely tell me what I am missing since all indications are the part is bad. He never responded and the part is still bad in the field. The latest I heard is instead of admitting he might be wrong they may relocate the facility. I guarantee he would do that just to not admit failure regardless of cost. We had another case where a component was identified as being bad. This leader said he has "his employees" tested after we came in and the part we say is bad is fine and the site is OK. The issue was intermittent and that in itself pointed to the part we identified as being the root cause. Two days after leaving the site with this leader declaring the site 100% fine the site faulted again. We have not seen a request to correct the issue since. I just find it mind boggling that they hire us because we are experts in our field and the head of the project thinks he knows all and we are wrong. The worst part is he will likely have these issues secretly fixed to avoid any possibility of admitting he was wrong. I had one more case where he claimed our equipment was failing. I proved to him with the equipment spec as well as the spec our spec was based off of that the equipment was not failing but protecting itself from failure by self-reducing power. I guess two years after this he not once said I was right and kind of dropped the issue. Again I work for the company that makes the equipment... one would hope I know more about how it works compared to a person who has the job of managing a large product with many employees. Nope, that guy still believes he knows all and nobody should question his ability! It truly is a toxic environment and is such a shame. I worked on the project before this guy came to power and things were so much better.

I had just left my most recent job last Friday because my former boss is a Micro-manager. I will give a few instances their was a generator test that was being conducted on a different location and my manager was not following the rules that he himself implemented. At the same he had task a different team to request training to how to operate the HVAC Systems in the data Center in case of emergency. At 8:15 am i get a call from the team lead that she has a team member who happens to work overnight was standing by to request training for the HVAC systems. few moments later my boss calls me that he wants a last minute maintenance ticket for a generator test. So knowing that the maintenance will take time because in the IT world you have to explain the procedures, you have to explain the emergency back out procedures, you have to explain why you are conducting the procedures. Those takes tremendous amount time, so i proceeded to finish the easiest route was to train the team member because it only takes less than ten minutes and he has been there for over 8 hours and i do not want to hold him up even longer of course for his safety. By 8:40 I had completed both task. Despite that i had completed both task he got angry that why i did not follow how i suppose to proceed where he want that Maintenance ticket be submitted first then train that team member? That is one of the main reasons that i left because i have no creativity to perform any kind of task without him on the background trying to control every aspect of it. On the same week i was called in to inspect an HVAC unit after hours where me and the HVAC technician were investigating the mechanical issue and he wants us to call him every ten minutes to update him making it impossible for the technician to do his job. This call was 10 pm and my manager works from home in a different state. He wants us to work all night ???? No i told him Nope not me I quit i dont want to work for an incompetent and a micromanager .

Many people who gets put into a management position is never train how to lead. I wish that their is a course that is offered to the work force like when i was in the MIlitary where we went to leadership training when we were climbing up in ranks. Many of this issues would have been avoided.

My boss in Qualcomm sandiego was highly micromanager. When bosses micromanager they silently communicate that they don't trust you that you will do your work or finish your work. They don't trust you enough , so there is need of micromanagement. They do it directly or via other people whom apparently they trust... It signals to you that you are failure in your boss's eyes.

This is one of the reasons I quit working for a cleaning contractor. I was contracted out to the UPS hub on the west side of Columbus from April 29, 2007 to August 31, 2022 and it was stressful. Things got worse in 2021, when my supervisor kept pestering me to speed things up. I am on the autism spectrum, and was VERY nit-picky about equipment maintenance

The entire team is looking to find new jobs, it’s pathetic. You are right, micromanagers are the busiest people in the world because they are trying to do it ALL.

In the customer service industry you have to develop a thick skin I played college ball 10 second shot clock, down by 1 on the free throw line I make both we win I mis both we lose and it's an sway game 30,000 fans booing you calling name's if you can handle that pressure you can handle irate customers. How do you wash your car if you leave the roof for last the top dirt will run back over the clean spots you just did that tells me you have weak coordination these things start at home before I invest 90 day's training I'm putting you on a 2 week's probation. That way you get a first check or first and last check. Six months ago we got a new boss. I meet with him once a week for a one-on-one meeting. I used to love these meetings, and in the beginning I felt I was creatively contributing ideas. But over the last few months, these meetings have felt more like a chore, and now I actually dread them because they always feel like performance reviews. And you're absolutely right about "sucking time"; he goes through phases where he wants to "declutter" areas (our staff lounge was a bit of a mess, but he had us all take time out during the week to clean the area out, which naturally took time away from what we needed to do). Also, he was fixated on my desk (which was on the smaller side) and I know the reason he was fixated on it was because it was cluttered. So he actually got a larger, wider desk for my office (he got it through a colleague who was moving away) and kept telling me I needed to clear my old desk out so this new one could take its place. But because it's larger than my old one, I had literally rearrange my bookshelves and and other office furniture to accommodate it, so again, massive time consumer.

Now that's interesting. Sometimes leaders exert control over seemingly irrelevant things as a way to gain control, maybe over others or from a self psychological perspective.
