    THANK YOU for such a clear demonstration of the Lough Neagh Set. I teach the Sets here in Phila and have danced many, many times with Pete Bret and Jean Ver Hoven both excellent dancers, who passed on the notes and a video of the Dance to Pat Murphy who then published it in "The Flowing Tide". Now that I have watched performed by you folks in such a clear manner I will be re-introducing it to my class---Circle of Friends----located at the Commodore John Barry Arts and Cultural Center ( aka--Phila Irish Center. Well done !!!!!

    One of the names for this dance is the Plain Reel Set, but Figure 5 is done to a jig. Go figure! All the other Figures are actually done to reels.

    I was wondering if you guys had ever done the Mazurka Set. The Cleveland Ceili Club is getting ready for our 1916 Easter Rising commemorative dance on May 22, 2016 and I have been posting your videos as instructional videos to our members so they can get ready. you have all the other dances we are planning on doing, but I can't find a good example of the Mazurka Set. Thank you and HAPPY DANCING!!!

    It's lovely that your club created these videos. I'd like to offer a little feedback. "Show the lady" means one couple housing inside the set for 8 bars. The usual term for the first move in this set is "Hook and house." In Fig. 3 the "Swing four twice" (a.k.a. Double Little Christmas) is shown with a basket hold but is usually danced with a wrist hold behind the back.

    • @SetsInMoscow
      @SetsInMoscow 8 лет назад

      +S Harrison, thank you for feedback. Our vision of "Show the lady" is based upon "Toss the feathers" by Murphy and our dancing experience at Willie Clancy at Miltown. About "Swing four" - yes, we know that, you're right, more frequently it is danced with wrist hold behind the back.

    • @susanh02
      @susanh02 8 лет назад

      Maybe using the term "Show the lady" is a regional variation. FWIW, in Toss the Feathers, Pat Murphy writes the first movement as "Top couples dance two bars in place then dance around." In various places people do that or they add the hook or they do a full 8-bar house without anything special in the first 2 bars. Now that we've had this discussion publicly, people will be prepared for these regional variations. :)

      I learned the ballivourney jig set when I was in Belfast (but i'm not Irish, i'm Belgian). And our teacher taught us "show the lady" by dancing the two first bars on the spot. But he also taught us "show the lady" in the kerry set, 2nd figure, when the couples take turns to house within the set :)

    One small detail, the non-lead couples should be dancing in place when the lead couples are swinging at the end of the first repeat. Step 5 in your video. Also, there's a mis-spelling of 'and' in step 10. Also, during the little-christmas (swing in 4) the non-lead couples should be dancing in place

    We dance this figure slightly differently in Dublin. ladies straight across - dance in place with opposite gent. Gents straight across turn lady once with right hand and twice left hand. Love your videos and the text on the right is great!

    This is different from the Connemara set. I didn't realise there was a connemara set and a connemar jig set?

    • @SetsInMoscow
      @SetsInMoscow 9 лет назад

      Yes, these are different sets. Connemara set is a four-figure set, three reels and one polka. This video shows Connemara Jig set. Another name of this set is "FORAER a NEAINTIN". Look at www.setdancingnews.net/teacher/CONNJIG.HTM for more detailed instructions if you need them.

    I hope you don't mind some friendly criticism. Loosen up your steps and let them flow a bit more. You're being very clockwork precise but that's not adding to the dance, rather it's making it look wooden. The overlay text is a great idea but check your sources as you have a few mistakes in the text as well as in a few movements (the chase the ladies comes to mind) Lastly, the dance is the Clare Plain Set or Plain Set and not the Plain Reel Set, note that the the 5th figure is jigs! Take a look at ruclips.net/user/playlist?&list=PLmJGagVAHqqYefZh6Qf9qFj4k7gcHMoy7 Keep dancing, it all becomes easier and smoother with time and you have a great start!

      Mike Didkovsky Hi Mike,Hello from Dublin to Moscow. My daughter in New York translated the logo and she says that it says the Moscow Irish National Dance Group, is that right? I'm new to set dancing and I love your videos! I love the text at the side it makes it a wonderful way for a new set dancer to learn. I've just recently moved to Ireland and have started set dancing and it is very difficult to get the opportunity to dance outside of my classes (the established dancers are not very good at welcoming new, inexperienced dancers, which is a shame) Your video demos and text give me the opportunity to learn in a new and exciting way and people here in Ireland should have been doing something similar years ago......it takes a fresh insight to breathe life into things.

      hello irishinoslo, have you mainly danced in and near Dublin? I have been to a few events in that area where I would have to agree, the locals were very unwelcoming (and that's being charitable to them). If you have tried, get out into the country (all the way to Clare if you can) where you're more likely to find people that are eager to have you
