Great tips, Matt. I've been knotting pearls for about 20 years and I personally prefer baroque shapes and Keishis. I tried selling Tahitian, but they are so expensive wholesale that I stick to fresh water, which are beautiful, too. Thanks again.

My Mum told me to make sure I never got makeup on the pearls she gave me, as it would damage them. Also that perfume and hairspray was no good for them either. However she said that the more you wear them the better they look, something to do with the oil from your skin.

What about mikimoto pearls. He perfected the no kill and replacing an irritant to make new pearls.

I had my mother's graduated Mikimoto to pearl necklace and earrings set in sterling silver. They were gifted to my mother in Japan (during the occupation after WWII) by Mr. Mikimoto, nephew of the original Mikimoto who perfected the method of culturing pearls. He also once presented her a bowl of pearls and asked her to pick three. She picked one large (not the largest) and three others. He said the large one was the most valuable in the bowl. My brother's widow has it. She had it made into a drop, without piercing or glueing it. Their dsughter-in-law will I Heritage it. I have my mothers strand to my daughter. I have Akoya pearl necklace from Japan from the 1980s and thru are pretty but not as beautiful as my mom's, which had a pinkish glow when worn next to the skin.

There's also so much natural stone jewellery around featuring an actual chrysotile asbestos stone, usually labelled "zebra jasper". It's not benign at all, because if you're wearing it whilst making dinner, you splash a bit of vinegar on the stone and the upper layer becomes compromised immediately and starts to release the fibres into the air. Even rubbing with your other jewellery is going to damage the integrity of the stone. But many sellers of jewellery have no idea what they're selling as most opaque stones are just given the name of "jasper", so you've got to be careful and it's best to google what the "zebra jasper" looks like and avoid anything similar.

2 Questions: #1 - When you say "real or fake", what are your definitions? Naturally occurring salt and freshwater pearls are undoubtedly real. Cultured (the human intervention of seeding the molluscs) or "farmed" salt and freshwater pearls are also REAL, but often called fake. #2 - Do you know (or have a video of) what natural v cultured and real v fake look like under uv black light?

in 2020 my dad gave me 3 boxes of jewellery that my step mother didn’t want, i said thankyou but couldn’t use it because they were earings and my ears aren’t pierced. i only gained awareness on life just this year sooo when i finally paid attention to the beautiful jewellery that had been sat on my shelf for years i opened the box and said “WOW” , there is this beautiful necklace, silver chain with a pearl at the end probably from thailand , i showed my mother and asked her to tell me if it was a real pearl , she didn’t know so i looked this up and turns out it is real 😀😀😀 tooth test is great! thankyou matt

Please tell me you haven't discarded the earrings in any way. Don't give them away, throw them out or sell them, please. You can buy earring converters! That is, they have a clip on our screw style backing which can be worn by anyone even without piercing. These have a small hole or cylinder (depending on the type you choose) which the pierced post/hook attaches to. You'll then be able to wear them whenever you like and it keeps them in your possession for future generations.

My granny gave me her everyday choker before she passed away, and I was going to sell them for a nice chunk of change, until one day I wore them for fun,and I realized I couldn't.I would never be able to have ANYTHING that she wore again. So real (I'm sure they are) or fake...it doesn't matter...they belonged to Annie...and when I wear them...I can feel her. There is no money that can replace that
