Of course I always have to mention pearls, so I did! It's Christmas day to...

4 Ways to Tell if Your Pearls Are Real or Fake
Просмотров 356 тыс.3 года назад
In this video, pearl designer and expert Matt Harris shows you how to distinguish real pearls from fake pearls!
Great tips, Matt. I've been knotting pearls for about 20 years and I personally prefer baroque shapes and Keishis. I tried selling Tahitian, but they are so expensive wholesale that I stick to fresh water, which are beautiful, too. Thanks again.
I knew fake from real from the age of 5, the rubbing on a tooth method. So easy, I assumed everyone knew.
I bought my pearls on Amazon to string myself and am so happy they are real as I was told.
This is a wonderful, informative video. Thank you so much!
My Mum told me to make sure I never got makeup on the pearls she gave me, as it would damage them. Also that perfume and hairspray was no good for them either. However she said that the more you wear them the better they look, something to do with the oil from your skin.
What about mikimoto pearls. He perfected the no kill and replacing an irritant to make new pearls.
I had my mother's graduated Mikimoto to pearl necklace and earrings set in sterling silver. They were gifted to my mother in Japan (during the occupation after WWII) by Mr. Mikimoto, nephew of the original Mikimoto who perfected the method of culturing pearls. He also once presented her a bowl of pearls and asked her to pick three. She picked one large (not the largest) and three others. He said the large one was the most valuable in the bowl. My brother's widow has it. She had it made into a drop, without piercing or glueing it. Their dsughter-in-law will I Heritage it. I have my mothers strand to my daughter. I have Akoya pearl necklace from Japan from the 1980s and thru are pretty but not as beautiful as my mom's, which had a pinkish glow when worn next to the skin.
When I rub the pearl against my teeth and against each other, it feels like sandpaper sound
I always do the tooth test. If it feels like glass hitting my tooth it’s real
Thank you so very much for this information! ❤
I just discovered your channel. I inherited a lot of pearls from my Mom and other family members and I plan on doing the tooth test on them. Thank you for educating all of us.❤️❤️
So glad I found this channel. I am a pearl fanatic. I even named my cat Pearl. I have about 20 different strands. Love the pink tones. My grandson wanted to wear pearls but my daughter told him ' pearls are for girls'. I love your single black pearl. Getting one for him now. Thank you
well thank you so much, this was Superinteresting!
I love the odd-ball pearls myself... Baroque or ripple pearls are so appealing to my eye.
I have a variety of real pearls, but some are Antique natural and some are cultured pearls... these have vastly different values. I have no problem spotting imitation pearls by eye, though some are beautiful, they just are different looking.
Thank you for the good advice. Different Q on same topic. What are river pearls and are they as valuable?
Hello where are you from? I am pearl lover and want to buy from you.
There's also so much natural stone jewellery around featuring an actual chrysotile asbestos stone, usually labelled "zebra jasper". It's not benign at all, because if you're wearing it whilst making dinner, you splash a bit of vinegar on the stone and the upper layer becomes compromised immediately and starts to release the fibres into the air. Even rubbing with your other jewellery is going to damage the integrity of the stone. But many sellers of jewellery have no idea what they're selling as most opaque stones are just given the name of "jasper", so you've got to be careful and it's best to google what the "zebra jasper" looks like and avoid anything similar.
Hi. I inherited my grandmother's 36" beautiful pearls. How can I tell if they are freshwater or salt water pearls? Thanks so much-great video.
I hope you didn't rob that lady that brought the 3,000 dollar fake pearl necklace to your store. I know you gotta make money but hopefully you treated her fair and gave her a fair price
What about quahog pearls, the rarest pearl of them all, Oyster pearls SUCK! Clam Pearls FTW…
Great video! Come to find out my pearls are real. Thank you so much. How do you care for real pearls? I’ve heard wearing them regularly helps preserve them. But I don’t know much about pearls.
I have a antique three strand pearl necklace with a baguette cut or art, deco style closure, diamonds, and be difficult to clean. I haven’t seen any videos on this. I have to try to clean it without soaking the strings on the side, right?🎉❤
I wanted to know whether the jewelery site "Hi pearl" has real pearls or not. To me it looks real but i can't be certain...
This was a great video! Thank you!
Appreciate listening to your extensive knowledge on pearls Mr. Harris. Yes, Pearls ARE BEAUTIFUL! Thank You.
2 Questions: #1 - When you say "real or fake", what are your definitions? Naturally occurring salt and freshwater pearls are undoubtedly real. Cultured (the human intervention of seeding the molluscs) or "farmed" salt and freshwater pearls are also REAL, but often called fake. #2 - Do you know (or have a video of) what natural v cultured and real v fake look like under uv black light?
Good to know - thanks for sharing
I got fooled🥲
Really helped
Thank You For This Amazing Video. I would like a strand of freshwater black pearls between the size of a BB and a pea about 22 inches long. What would I be looking at paying for this type of order? Please? I would like it for daily wear.
I saw a video from an asian girl pick pearls from mussels in an Asia river and one of the mussels got metallic magenta color pearls! Are they possibly real? Unusual natural color of pearls?
Thank you. Really helpful ❤
in 2020 my dad gave me 3 boxes of jewellery that my step mother didn’t want, i said thankyou but couldn’t use it because they were earings and my ears aren’t pierced. i only gained awareness on life just this year sooo when i finally paid attention to the beautiful jewellery that had been sat on my shelf for years i opened the box and said “WOW” , there is this beautiful necklace, silver chain with a pearl at the end probably from thailand , i showed my mother and asked her to tell me if it was a real pearl , she didn’t know so i looked this up and turns out it is real 😀😀😀 tooth test is great! thankyou matt
Please tell me you haven't discarded the earrings in any way. Don't give them away, throw them out or sell them, please. You can buy earring converters! That is, they have a clip on our screw style backing which can be worn by anyone even without piercing. These have a small hole or cylinder (depending on the type you choose) which the pierced post/hook attaches to. You'll then be able to wear them whenever you like and it keeps them in your possession for future generations.
new subscriber. Would you please give advice on whom to trust to restring pearls? I adore pearls and have several strands that need to be restrung. Thank you for any advice or help. Cheers!
This was the most informative and helpful video I've found about identifying real/fake pearls. Thanks for making it.
Thanks Mat.
Great video! Thank you
Is there real pearls that are star shaped ?
Thank you so much!!
Thank you. The only think I knew about pearls before was not to cast them before swine.
Love pearls! Thanks so much for the info! Had to subscribe!👏👏👍😊
My granny gave me her everyday choker before she passed away, and I was going to sell them for a nice chunk of change, until one day I wore them for fun,and I realized I couldn't.I would never be able to have ANYTHING that she wore again. So real (I'm sure they are) or fake...it doesn't matter...they belonged to Annie...and when I wear them...I can feel her. There is no money that can replace that
Talk about their value and a way to know if the buyer to painful too much please. Also how to clean as they are strung and some solutions may weaken the strand. Myths? That body oils are good for the pearl. Thank you. Subscribed!
The few pearls I have were all gifts. Do I dare? I’d feel bad as I know they were gifted with sincere love. Knowing is one thing worthwhile and so was the gift. But! If I myself bought pearls you bet I would check! Thank you.
Under a UV light, what does it mean if it glows neon.
Thank you
Matt, I have a black pearl from the sea of cortez, we found while diving. We had it made into a pendant w/o holes. how can I get this appraised and perhaps sell. thank you. L-
