    My personal favorite is the fallacy fallacy: analyzing an argument and inferring that, since it contains a fallacy, its conclusion must be false.

    While there are some people that make these arguments, they’re entirely surface level and most religious scholars don’t hold these beliefs (or use these logical fallacies when arguing for the existence of an intelligent creator). They’re basically fifth grade level apologetics, and knocking them down is a straw man argument in it of itself. They also aren’t actually religious fallacies, you just picked logical fallacies and inserted a religious context in them.

    For the Dunning-Kruger effect in poker, I’d look to examples like the guy who decides that because he usually wins in a weekly home game where no one is playing seriously and the stakes are low that he should go to Vegas and play high stakes games (where, in practice, said player will get skinned alive by the pros who mostly populate said games and are waaaay more skilled than anyone he’s ever played before.)

  • @chloemchll3774
    @chloemchll3774 Месяц назад

    Just as a point of order, many of your “examples” don’t actually hold true in practice or apply to all cases. Most craps players are not skilled or knowledgeable enough about how to throw dice to control the outcome, but a very small fraction (probably something like .0001%) can learn to throw rolls that aren’t 7s consistently. The most skilled among this group might even be skilled enough to make a desired outcome more likely. It is a tough skill to learn and generally takes a lot of practice, but they do exist. A lot of your poker related examples are also (and this is coming from someone who played professionally) a little off. A player who wins a couple pots in a row might actually be more likely to win the next pot based on his table image (people get frustrated losing big bets over and over to the same player, so they become more likely to fold to that player’s bets when that player’s wins are fresh in their minds.) It isn’t about “hot hands” or “overconfidence” on the player’s part (and if that’s the justification for the player’s actions, they are committing the fallacies as you describe them) but rather how the table perceives them. To say it another way, if I’ve just shown down three straight winning hands involving big bets being paid off, it is pretty likely that my opponents will assume a 4th big bet on the next hand will also be my having a strong hand and as such, will be inclined to not pay me off, making bluffing in this spot a more profitable play than it normally is. Of course, this could also work the opposite way (the opponents decide I can’t keep winning every pot and must eventually be bluffing) so it is on the player to decide what sorts of adjustments their opponents are making to respond to the player’s winning streak- my point ultimately is that it isn’t necessarily a fallacy to think that winning consecutive pots doesn’t have a snowball effect in terms of how your opponents respond, which in turn can increase your chances of winning the next one.

  • @lolvks
    @lolvks Месяц назад

    Poker is a bad example of hot hand fallacy since there is an element of player to player interaction involved. A player with the winning hand is not necessarily the player who wins in the end. Hot hand fallacy in poker can also work in a players favor when opponents fold potentially winning hands. This is unless the game is played against the house where the outcome is only decided by the cards in play.

      I'm sure many people believe they can, and some may even point to those who appear to be good at it, saying, "just look at their results." However, this is a classic example of survivorship bias, which happens when people focus on the few successful cases while ignoring the many failures, giving a misleading impression of how effective a strategy really is.

    • @Chris01114

      @@ExplainedWithPaint Well, I haven't really tried it, but if some people can indeed pull it off it would increase tge chances of you getting the number you want by 50%. And if it's hard to do I'd argue it's more of an issue with skill than randomness. Though I'm sure if people posses the skill to do this they'd promptly be thrown out of any casinos if they used it
