Elite dangerous was a game released in 1984. As you can imagine, at that time all you saw on the monitors were simple geometric shapes in two colors. The game developers wanted to respect the shape of those iconic ships. Elite Dangerous was a very revolutionary game at that time because of the things it proposed. It even came with a little book, which told the story of the game. That is why the Elite Dangerous ships in the game that can be played today have such geometric and unstylized shapes. I didn't get to play that original game, I'm younger, but the people who did, really appreciate that the essence of that original game was maintained, with the shape of the ships. @JackSonAK477

you know, every triangle isn't stealing a star destroyer. Did elite steal the iconic shape from star wars when creating the anaconda and federal corvettes? Every X wing shape doesn't mean stealing form starwars either, and every ship with exposed nacelles or saucer sections doesn't mean stealing form star treak. There is hardly anything original in scifi these days and you see designed elements used from multiple sources all the time. It is pretty normal for artists to do this and I think people work themselves into overthinking who came up with a shape more than in answering the question: is the end-result from whatever re-concept or re-imagining of a well-known shape good or bad? That's the ultimate question that matters as it either works as a design, or it doesn't. As a result, whatever wedge, or triangle, or x-shape ship you design should work for the universe it was created for regardless of having its inspiration sourced from other franchises. In this regard, both ships seem to work well even as they are vastly different sizes, and off course star citizen's has a fully fleshed out interior which is taking something good, and getting it past where Elite left it. In the end fans of the design win, much in the same way the countless star destroyer-like ships from many games continue to delight people as such iconic shape greatly appeals to people who dream of flying something that looks like a star destroyer.
