Excellent tutorial, Sam!
Thanks so much! It's been a fun thing to mess around with. lots still to learn. One day Ill get a camera and not just use my phone
Good flaming brand painting tutorial. Easy to follow along. It’s cool to see your fire technique on one of the newer released models as well.
awesome! So glad you found it easy to follow along.
I enjoyed the hobby video! Good change of pace to mix in with the batreps, in my opinion. It’s cool to see different paint schemes and styles out there that stands apart from what the box art is. Loved the finished preview at the end. I feel the same about painting eyes at this scale! You’ve got to get so close to get into them well enough. If I had any notes, the airbrush compressor in the background is distracting at the first part of this video. It was easier to listen in once the brushwork steps began. Cheers! Looking forward to watch the next one.
Really glad you enjoyed the video! I definitely think it's good to mix things up, and it's something we are planning on doing more of in the future. So nice to hear someone else agrees. Ah yea that makes sense about the compressor. It's a little tankless one which works well but definitely noisy. Perhaps I would have been better served, just airbrushing the one and cutting out all the rest to shorten that part. Thanks for all your thoughts! Sam
Best Christmas tale I've ever heard
Im glad someone enjoyed it!
In MARC league, for instance, with an 80 point tournament, what if Best Sportsman was worth 1/4 of total. So you could get 20 points extra for that. It could rack up over a season.
It would definitely be cool. But I believe they were mostly interested in wins. I reached out a while ago about sponsoring a best painted for the league. But they weren't interested. ah well
I had an ale idea: Osgiliath Veteran ale; overcosted as all hell, but we still drink it in hopes it will one day actually be good.
This could be the edition! It seems the banner doesn't give plus 1 fight anymore. But if they still get it with in a range of Boromir or Faramir... F5 pretty saucey!
@@GondorCallsforAle No, they get re-roll 1s to wound within 6" of the brothers. Yeah, I'm not writing them off just yet, but I'm unconvinced. When compared to Warriors of MT, you basically pay an extra point to lose Shieldwall, and you gain: Hatred Mordor, +1 courage, +1 int, and re-roll 1s most of the time (you're always taking both brothers in that list). So they MIGHT work. I'm hopeful; it will be really sad if Osgiliath Veterans aren't even playable in the Reclamation of Osgiliath list.
Ah I hadn't seen the rules for them yet. That's a shame. Oh well still a mega cool army. And I love the changes to Faramir. Id definitely still take some Osgiliath veterans. For the flavour at least
Ian here! Good to see the picture of Ben in the helmet got thumbnailed, it's my absolute favorite picture thus far. As this year's champion, I thought I'd clarify some things for Sam. 1. The podium was me in 1st, with Jimmy Coughlin's MT/Fiefdoms in 2nd and Matt Iverson's Fornost in 3rd. I think Henry and the Troll-Toll list was dead center with 2-1-2, which was fun to see. 2. I cracked up multiple times playing against Jimmy's normal sized Minas Tirith lads because my WoMT and Fountain Guard TOWERED over his, and my mounted Elessar is basically the size of a troll. I'll be dialing it back for my upcoming projects, based on some comments I think I bridged the gap from absurd and went straight into psychological warfare. On more than one occasion someone didn't fully register the threat Earnur posed because Elessar was so large and in charge by comparison, and my warriors being Beorning sized on tall bases dominated sightlines enough to make it seem like I had numerical superiority. Given I was at 32 models, I generally didn't. 3. I voted for Matt Iverson in Best Painted. The vibe I've gotten is that every one of his lists has already won best painted in the past because he's been in the hobby that long, but I knew for a fact that the Earnur and Medbury Gwyrdgalas Elves he brought were painted very recently and they looked so damn good. Ben's Rohirrim just needed those last finishing touches to be a strong contender, and with how good his basing and brushwork is I think Jimmy could have taken it as well with round or two of highlights. 4. About 30% of my list was motivated by theme. I usually use someone like Faramir to act as Aragorn's son Eldarion, but it doesn't tend to go as well because Faramir isn't quite beefy enough to take the pressure off of Elessar. This iteration felt the best out of all of them. Irolas is supposed to represent Beregond from the books (dude holds off 5 Citadel Guard singlehandedly like a chad), and I think his statblock is much better suited to him than Denethor's footman. Elessar, Eldarion, and Captain Beregond on loan from Ithilien riding to war in the 4th Age. The original plan was running Battle of Fornost for some proper theme alongside the new toys, but in the end I guessed that someone else would be running it and I really wanted to use my shiny new Fountain Guard. The other 70%? You bet your Grimbold it's because this was my one golden opportunity to play them together before the new edition. Going into the event I thought it was going to be more of a meme, seeing as I had 425pts locked up in heroes, but largely by accident it actually hit the critical mass needed for it to work. The two of them together just do SO much damage. I hadn't run the list at all before Armourcon and I'm pretty accustomed to dumb Elessar lists running out of steam, but this one had the goods and then some. Irolas called 14 Moves and a single Defense across the 5 games, all to keep the ball rolling and making sure every point of Elessar and Earnur's Might was devoted solely to murder.
The TWO named heroes KD has remaining are going to need some serious glow-ups. But glad Khazad Guard, Iron Guard, and Vault Wardens stuck around.
As proven at Nova Durin is no slouch. But hopefully they make him better! KD is definitely my favorite of the dwarves factions. -Sam
So exciting! Only one model deleted from the game, everything else gets rules for a bit
Agreed! Im super excited. Im hoping the box comes out soon!
Many were the ounces of Bourbon, Many were the laughs had.
Was a glorious way to spend the after day one hours!
Loved our game Ben, and I'm glad we finally go to play each other! I'm still shocked that Legolas and 4 archers were able to tie up your expeditionary force towards your terrain piece, and the Theodred/Tauriel fight at the end was nail-biting. I think I had about 13 dead at the end of the game - and I think about 8 of them were from Sorcerous Blasts! Gandalf was on fire! I hope we get to play again sometime!
I know Ben had a blast in this game as well! Alas Ben doesn't often check/respond to these comments ! -Sam
I would have listened to this stream just to hear the rangers' names.
I'm glad you enjoyed them! I had a blast coming up with them and painting them on the bases the night before the event!
The edition is dead. Long live the edition!
@@cobracommander7481 it’s not dead yet.
I'm sure you've already considered it, but if you're looking for something killy, and you're already taking Gandalf, Elessar is an excellent choice at high points IMO. His weakness to magic or shooting are mitigated by Gandalf, and he can call a move every turn to make sure Gandalf can cast, even if you wish to get him into combat. He also brings march, and I don't know how married you are to the idea of having bows and high fight, but it's definitely a strategy to have Blinding Light and march, just forgo shooting, accept fight 3, but you'll be mostly D7 because when your backline is also warriors of MT. Throw Hurin in and have your heroes move together as an unstoppable death squad. Maybe some knights of Minas Tirith. I understand I built an entirely different army for you lol, but if you want to take Gandalf I can't imagine a stronger pairing than Elessar. And the rest of the list kind of builds itself.
Hmmm interesting. I’ll have to write that list out. I’ve definitely considered dropping out the rangers. I feel the F3/4 could be ok if I could get to 55+ warriors. I’m definitely going to play around with the idea. It’s much more thematic than this or my other options.
@@NefariousBread Oh, you like you're numbers a bit higher than myself. If you want to reach 55, then the hero combination I like is Aragorn, Gandalf, Madril and Beregond. You can get to 55 like that with pure warriors of MT. Personally I'm more of a "hey I'm taking D7, 48 models is good enough" kinda guy lol. So I like a list that is basically Aragorn, Gandalf, Hurin and Madril. After all, the purpose of the troops is to die slowly and buy time for Aragorn and Hurin to win the game, with Gandalf's support. You just drop them on the table and look at you're opponent and say "hope you've got a way of dealing with these 2 monsters that isn't magic or shooting, otherwise they'll just blend everything on their path". My feeling is people find that Boromir is more efficient at lower points than Elessar, and just stay with that. But the value of the extra killing power and Mighty Hero is increased with higher points. In a longer game where enemies are more likely to bring high defence monsters and Heroes, that's where Elessar shines. Anyway, that's just my opinion. Good luck!
@@BrickWannI’ve done a little list writing with Aragorn Gandalf and Hurin. I was initially trying to get Madril in there too, but with just those 3 I can get to 50 models. It’s a very exciting idea actually. More themeatic than the Boromir Gandalf list I’ve been experimenting with. Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be able to get it painted for Nova.
I think looking back at the event and how Nova went for Ben, this list idea might have been more fun/ performed better!
Ben the Merciful is always a winner. Not making a new player rethink his decision to try MESBG shows your quality. Maybe for a non-game summary you can discuss the latest announcements from GW? Sam did a stellar job with the solo episode, but much has happened since then. Hopes and fears for new rules and supplements??
Thanks Man, no point in beating a dead elf i always say. Just hold tight. The next episode is his Friday will be just that. Our thoughts and ramblings on the current news.
Im glad to hear you enjoyed my solo rambling episode! Hopefully we get some more news soon!
Excellent review!
Thanks so much!! glad you enjoyed it. It was fun to do
This ramble pleases me!
Excellent, Ive been enjoying the DB babbles! I had a good time rambling along!
I think Ben was with you in spirit. I hope you both get many boxes of new hotness for Christmas. Return to childhood.
That's always the dream, getting toys for Christmas!
Looking at the wording on Sorcerous Blast, it seems to me like it was ruled correctly. The manual specifies that if you knock over a model that is in combat, then all the models in that combat are knocked over. It also specifies that if you blast a model into a str 6 model, it stops immediately and doesn't knock it prone. Your situation is the second one, and since that model isn't affected, nobody else within the combat is affected. If you could've aimed the blasted model at your own uruk, then yes, it would've worked. It seems weird, but at the same time you can see why they ruled it this way, so as to stop people from abusing it. In fact the example you used of Saruman and Ents wouldn't work, because if you knock other models within the combat prone, then the big model also gets knocked prone.
I still disagree with how it was ruled. the FAQ states "Q: If a model in a combat is affected by the Sorcerous Blast Magical Power, will any models of Strength 6 or higher in the same combat also be knocked Prone and take a Strength 3 hit as well? (p.100) A: Yes." which to me pretty clearly means either model in the combat. Either way I lost the game and didn't end up blasting that model. lol so no big deal either way. Plus with a new edition it'll all be redundant! No more silly bird lists! And who knows my sorcerous blast will completely change!
Let the record show that I (other Sam) did NOT run the bird. Elendil/Gil Galad/Galadriel
The Pale Rider against Roughshod Pike. Bourbon Clobber Em!

Fantastic, I hope ben doesnt talk too much poop about me in the next one! Cheers fellas
Army of gothmog!! Love to see it, it’s a hard list to pilot but very satisfying to get a win with
It's so much fun! Plus in meta of lots of fight 5 and 6 relying on the ol fight 3 morannon orcs feels pretty nice! And if you ever fight men... chefs kiss
I'm sorry about our match in Round 2, Sam :( I agree it wasn't really a contest, and I agree with everything you mentioned - Hold Ground was favorable to me (or at least more favorable than the other maelstrom scenarios), having to roll a 9 to pass every courage test is rough, failing to kill a Nazgul permanently is also miserable (and just feels bad when you don't actually make progress towards it), and everything else that you mentioned. I always enjoy getting to play you, but this one felt bad :(
No worries at all. I still had a great time!!! I think games like that can be an exercise in trying to figure out what weird way you can play to get the win. But that's requires more thinking than I am typically willing to give it lol It was very funny killing the lingering shadow with some insane orc bow fire though! I look forward to our next game!
Nice looking gothmog llc ;) love the pod!
Thanks so much! I am rather pleased with how the army looks! And so nice to hear you enjoy the podcast!
Thank you for mentioning the Durham's Bane tournament! It is a two-day event, July 13-14, 2024, and 700 points. (Sad that you two can't make it. ☹)
We are both super bummed not to be able to make it this one! Ah well I suppose it was bound to happen eventually
Great video
Thanks so much! Always nice to hear someone enjoys them!
Our game was so much fun! I'm so glad Chris witnessed my throwing spear amazing-ness. That was absolutely ridiculous. ALSO... what poetic justice that a lowly orc killed my leader... sweet revenge was exacted on Azog not many weeks later! (Sorry again, Ben!)
That was such a fun game!! And amazing that your throwing spears that didn't to much for the rest of the game came in absolutely clutch in the end! Eh Azogs a big bully he probably deserved it... - Sam
Love the pod!
Thanks so much! Really glad to hear you're enjoying it!
Great video. So much better watching
This was pretty cool to see. Never done conversion to this scale.
Really glad you enjoyed it! I love converting Middle earth models. In some ways its easier since they're less detailed than the newer GW models.
One of my favourite converters in the hobby scene, always a huge inspiration! Great to hear more from the legend himself! 🔥 (Also humbled by the Boromir shoutout, even I’d forgotten I made that it was so long ago 😂)
I absolutely love his work! and have for years. It was pretty hard not to "fan girl" out I won't lie. That Boromir is so awesome! Gents, we'd love to see your smiling faces at the Durham's Bane tournament from July 13-14, 2024.
We are going to try and make it. Alas July is like my busiest month. At the very least well give it a shout out! You know we love your events. -Sam
Hey, guys. After doing a deep dive through the rules and FAQ’s I found that Sam was correct. On page 86 under spear rules it says that heros can not take part in heroic actions and spear support.
Additional to that Raza’s special rule should only works when he is in combat with his target. Because he is spear supporting he wasn’t in combat with helm and should not have got his +2 fight.
VINDICATION!!!! lol nice to know I was wasn't crazy with the spear support rule, and totally hadn't even thought about the Raza rule requiring him to be in combat. I'd like to say that would have made all the difference. Alas for me and poor Helm, it wouldn't have. I was well and truly out played. Great game though! -Sam
Really disappointed the two of you don't dress up like Boromir and Faramir when you record these episodes.
Hahaha maybe we’ll have to give it a go.
