The Ride and Tie Association

Ride and Tie is an endurance racing sport combining running and horse riding. Teams consist of two runners and one horse who complete a 4-100 mile trail course by "leapfrogging" one another.
One person starts the race on the horse, the other on foot. The horse travels faster than the runner; after a previously arranged time has passed, the person on the horse gets off, ties the horse to a tree and takes off running. The first runner comes up to the horse, unties it and trots or gallops down the trail. When the horsed partner reaches the runner, the person on the horse can either get off and exchange with the other partner (a "flying tie") or can ride on and tie the horse to a tree. Partners do this for the entire distance. Each team learns to maximize the different members' strengths and weaknesses to their advantage. "Do the Hard Things" interview with Ken Campbell
At the 52nd Ride & Tie World Championship, Ken Campbell became just the 43rd person to complete the "Grand Three" which consists of finishing the Western States 100 Trail Run,Tevis, and a Ride and Tie World Championship. His story is an inspiring story of perserverance and faith.

That all depends because horeses have to be walked right after a race so there stomaches don't turn over.otherwise they can die. My dad own 10 raceing horses when i was young. I would go with him to all these raceing places and i would walk the horses after every race. ❤❤

What a "cool" sport. As an aspiring endurance rider, and a current ultra runner, this sport is a dream combo!
I'm adopting a horse with a bowed tendon in the Spring. He got his injury in April of 2023 so he will have about a year of healing. It's a 11-12 hour drive from the rescue to the barn, should I stop halfway at a stable and let him rest for a day? Or should I stop every 3 hours to let him rest for 30 minutes? Should I keep him inside of the trailer or let him walk around? I plan on wrapping his legs with polos to keep them a bit safer.
I am the administrator of this Ride & Tie Channel. I posted the video on long distance trailering but am not an expert, so I don't feel qualified to answer your question. Although you will likely get a lot of differing opinions, you might try asking the question on the AERC Facebook page.

If it has to do with Walton's I'm watching it. I love the memories of my childhood and hear the theme song come on it hits my soul. I go back to my childhood days and miss those days of innocence and laughter...thank you for the memories.

I've only found one within a 2 hour radius of me in New England- which is crazy, since we have a HUGE population of ultra runners. I'm spreading the word!
That race goes right through or place the pictures with the barn In it at the end is a little bit of it
It was great seeing the interview with Annette and Jim and hearing their stories. I have known them both a long time and they truly exude the spirit of ride and tie. I have used Annette's books 40 years of Madness and 50 years of Madness many many times over the years to introduce people to ride and tie. We all need to broadcast our enthusiasm of the sport to everyone we meet on the trail, be they hikers, runners or horse people. Everybody has heard of hitchhiking...well...a quick explanation is all it takes to get them thinking about it...people have been doing it for centuries! Keep on rocking!
