agree 100% with this- spotify (and all other streaming services) rewards only big artists and/or artists releasing a glut of playlist fodder. we can't match the output quantity nor the reach of big artists, but that's to our advantage. rather than buy into the rat race, making each release into something more substantial is definitely the way to go. physical releases, remixes, collaborations, liner notes and music videos (as you mentioned!) definitely gives more weight to what we do and keeps the music and its themes on people's minds much more. it allows us to connect with our audiences by giving our music the personal touch, and its definitely much more sustainable than the fractions of a penny streaming services graciously (/s) give we played around with the idea of making physical discs for our next project by using lightscribe discs and using making printouts for jewel cases - you've definitely solidified the idea in our mind

At one point I was starting to get traction on Spotify for my podcast and then I just fell off. There was some behind-the-scenes drama and I just felt there was too much of a barrier there but that may not have been the platform. I have had other people talk about how hard it was and a friend quit because it's a lot of work and no real payout till you hit some unattainable threshold

Crazy coincidence. Recently I was talking to another racialized friend about a environmental concern that is impacting my neighborhood. They seemed very dismissive and questioned my legitimacy when I brought it up, and I thought exactly like you said “why should plead for my life” and plead for my community .
