Jig Blwyddyn Farw / The Dead Year Jig. A new clawhammer banjo jig in fDGCD tuning.
Finished on New Year's Eve, 2024.
I write tunes by playing them, cementing them in my fingers. Sometimes I can't make the various jartsfit together, and can't work out why.
With this I had a totally different A and C part, but they just didn't work.
Then I realised they were in 4/4, whereas the B part (which is fun to play) is in 6/8 jig time. I hadn't even noticed!
So I kept the fun part and went for a full on jig.
You can tell when you have a jig right as your fingers kind of have to gallop along like the dancers would. If your fingers are hitting the head a little, they'll probably sound like feet on the dance floor!
This tune has a miserable name reflecting all sorts of terrible things in ...

The new tune is called "Clychau'r Gog" which is Welsh for blue bells - a slightly more romantic take on the name of the banjo. Literally it translates as "cuckoo bells" as the bluebells are always in flower when the cuckoos are at their noisiest in the hills of North Wales. (Yes, I miss North Wales, can you tell?) This banjo is lovely. But I have to sell it as I have too many. Sorry but UK only...

The arrangement is mine, based on the fiddling of Owen "Snake" Chapman. Tuning is standard G. Obviously this is the words of Woody Guthrie - here describing the plane crash in the Los Gatos Canyon of 1948. The tune was written by Martin Hoffman in the 1950s. The flight was carrying Mexican deportees out of California, back to Mexico. The crash killed 32 people. The press reports only named the four US citizens, the Mexicans all remained nameless until fairly recently following research ...

I've been playing in public more recently, so here is a single take of two songs, with some fluffs of lyrics, and the melody. I need to do this more. Mostly so I can learn to cover up fluffs a bit better! (It includes an eBay notification from my phone at the end - I wonder if that's copyrighted??)

Sometimes just called "Yarrow". This is based on the version recorded by Red Tail Ring where Laurel Premo plays sublime clawhammer banjo. My version is less sublime, but it does the trick. I love the Red Tail Ring version of this. So that's what mine is based on. Don't get me wrong, I love the Maybelle Carter one too, but this just has the edge for me. And of course it has Laurel Premo's clawhammer banjo. My tuning is a little sharper than eCGCD, but not enough to be fC#G#C#D#!
