Interesting that you use ropes to attach the oars. That's a variation I hadn't seen. Could you explain how that works and maybe post some photos of the rope on the oar?

The rope (aka humliband) is the traditional way to retain an oar when rowing with kabes, and is the design that is included in Iain Oughtred's original plans. It is fixed to a small steel loop under the inboard gunwale and has a stopper knot in the other end which drops into a slot in the top of the kabe. The slot in the kabe is a departure from the plans/tradition, as it is more common to have the rope pass through a hole instead. However, this makes it difficult to ship and unship the oars. The rope passes up the stern side of the oar and is placed in the slot in the kabe. There needs to be some slack in the rope to allow full movement of the oar, which leads to a small amount of movement for the oar fore and aft when moving at the catch and the finish. We've been using this system since we launched in 2013 and we're really comfortable with it. It is very robust and needs almost no maintenance.

@@rowcatterline thanks for this. I looked up the word Humliband and found a document on SCRA website that says ". The flat front face of the oar bears against the kabe and is kept there by a rope lanyard called a humliband. This system was found unsatisfactory by all who tried it and now nobody uses it." Clearly SCRA is wrong regarding the word "nobody", but I'm less enthusiastic about it trying this approach after reading it. It's remarkable how many variations and opinions there are in methods to attach oar to pin.
