    What month did you do the Salkantay Trek? It looked like it rained a lot. Was that normal weather for the month you went? I am thinking of doing that Trek either in August or September. Any recommendation and/or advice in regards to what month I choose (pros and cons)? I know you said you went during the shoulder season so was Machu Picchu considerably less crowded?

    • @EmilyFlynn
      @EmilyFlynn Год назад

      Hi! So I did the trek at the end of September. I think september marks the start of shoulder season, with October starting true rainy season most years, so you are probably slightly more likely to have nice weather in August. I know a couple people who went in July of the same year as I did and had much more fortunate weather. I had a great time with the company and my trekking group regardless of the rain, and still had great weather at Machu Picchu, but I do wish I was able to see Humantay more clearly! I think august and September are close enough to each other that it’s probably luck of the draw, and if it were me I would just pick what worked better for flights etc, keeping in mind august has a slight chance of more sunny days. Machu Picchu was almost empty when I visited, but it was also a year ago and international travel was just starting again. Hope that helps! I have a lot of photos of the conditions on my Instagram highlights too! have an amazing trip🫶

      @@EmilyFlynn Thank you for your response. It was helpful and insightful. I am going to travel solo. I know when I am with the tour group I will be safe. But what about the taxi ride from airport to hotel. I will be alone. Is it safe? And what about walking around Cusco alone. Is that safe? (I do not speak Spanish).

    • @EmilyFlynn
      @EmilyFlynn Год назад

      @@billw9284 happy to help! I traveled solo and flew into the Cusco airport. You can walk right out and catch a taxi in front of the airport, it was probably overpriced but felt safe. You could also call your hotel and ask them to arrange a pick-up for you. Most hotels do this for a fee and it makes it a lot less scary when you’re first getting oriented after a flight! It’s usually about $20. I felt very safe walking around Cusco, but I mostly stuck to daylight hours. If I walked alone in the evening (traveling alone as a woman) it would only be a quick walk to grab a bite to eat and I had a local SIM card for directions and emergency calls. I only speak a bit of Spanish, and I studied before traveling in Latin America. I studied basic words just to be able to say hello, order a meal, ask how much something costs, stuff like that - which made me feel much safer! Most people spoke better English than I spoke Spanish, but appreciate it when you try a little! Of course, my travels were prior to the political situation currently happening in Peru, so I would ultimately refer to the news and travel guidelines about safety. The trekking company I went through was also an extremely helpful resource and answered a lot of my questions!

    • @EmilyFlynn
      @EmilyFlynn Год назад

      Hi Lanqi, I've never done the hike in November but I would say bringing microspikes to have them if you need them is always a safe bet! I did bring them when I went in March, but I didn't use them. If there is a fresh snowstorm snowshoes would be a lot of fun! I was actually up there a couple days ago and the moose are out like crazy right now, would recommend going early morning while they're out! pics on my ig of the conditions as of 9/25/22 and the moose if you're curious!!

    Emily thanks for your video. We are doing the Salkantay trail in a couple of weeks. Any recommendations about bug spray? I assume we will need sun block? Are showers available? txs. j

    • @EmilyFlynn
      @EmilyFlynn 2 года назад

      I didnt carry bug spray and amazingly didnt have any issues, but I know that bug bites are common on trail so not a bad idea to bring! Sun block is a definitely yes because the sun is so strong at high altitude. I would also recommend SPF chapstick because my lips are always getting burnt when im hiking at altitude! The first three nights showers were available for a fee (I think cold water only, but I was way too tired and cold at night to do that!) and the fourth night you’re in a hotel room with an ensuite bathroom to get fresh before the Machu Picchu tour!

    Love your videos. So helpful in planning a trip to Machu Picchu. Question: How big are the duffle bags that the horses carry? I've found information on the weight limit. But I'm trying to get an appreciation in terms of length/width/height, volume by liters or cubic inches.

    • @EmilyFlynn
      @EmilyFlynn 2 года назад

      I’d say the duffel bags were approximately carry on sized, not huge. But I left most of my belongings in my suitcase (which the company stored during the trek) and just packed what I needed between my day pack and the duffel bag! I had plenty of room, but I only had a carry on sized suitcase during my travels. Have a great trip to Machu Picchu!! Edit: You can see the duffel bag on the floor at the 5:02 minute mark :)

      @@madisonnewman771 I had plenty of room for snacks, layers, and a few extra things so I think you could probably make it work.
