I'm taking a break from DMing because of this. The narrative didn't burn me out, the excitement of finally getting to the next session and the players waffling didn't burn me out, it was the constant canceling. I get it, shit comes up, but we play once a MONTH. Canceling two sessions in a row for a game that happens once a month is kind of nuts so I'm just done with it. The idea of making new friends to play RPGs with is probably the best advise for me. As much as I'd like to play with my close friends and family still, they're just incredibly unreliable.

Reminds me that 3rd edition dragons were also natural spellcasters ontop of being menacing martial monsters, with several templates giving even more lore options ranging from 'sacrificing their magic to become immortal paragons' to 'being stranded in pandemonium turned their breathweapon and resistances into a roulette wheel'.

They are giant, selfsofision, powerfull, greed, pridefull and they instintiv know how much gold their hoard is worth. So what if we made red dragons bankers? in Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, there's Dark Gifts players can get. one of them gives you "watchers" that you and others can constantly see. they do good and bad things, but they can be hidden for an hour with a successful DC 15 Charisma (animal handling) roll. I was really supprised to see mixed ability checks but it makes perfect sense if you think about it.

I love this approach. Thank you for pointing this out, this isn't something I've taken advantage of very much in the games I've run but the concept of a simplified way of looking at skill checks makes sense for new players, but I love rewarding creative solutions and I think this helps with that.

Yes it does. If you take RPGs too seriously, your bound to gather a group of pranksters that will ruin the game for you. Its best to assume the worst, and adapt to the situation then being rigid and reeeing all over the internet because someone made a funny joke at the beholder before being merk'd by its central eyebeam. Games are supposed to be fun after alls said and done.
