0:28, White Chevrolet Celebrity. My parents had a maroon Celebrity, good car.
Jordan Marsh had a restaurant on their second floor. Have to admit those blueberry muffins they had were really good. Somewhere near the mall was a betty crocker pie shop restaurant which other than their pies was pretty basic.
Really miss this period. Was 19 that year and loved going to the bookstores among other places. Lived outside of Boston but regularly was at Shopper's World in Framingham and Natick Mall.
All about the people wasn’t it? You went, you mingled with other people vs clicking an icon alone in your room!!
Imagine randomly watching this on youtube and seeing yourself on this clip
Just came home from a 4 year stint in the Marine Corps.
Hometown of actor Jim Carrey.
I was a teenager in 1976 and worked my family business on weekends, school breaks at the Boston colleges (bookstores) and I saw all the dipshit liberal socialist who were college students. They are the ones who later destroyed our society with the hippie bullshit philosophy
Computers ruined this.
2 events kind of started the downfall of the Combat Zone. One was when a Tufts University researcher became obsessed with a dancer. He spent embezzled research money to wine and dine her. He ended up killing her and tossing her in a dumpster. The second was when a group of Harvard students went there for their teams/frats excursion, they got in a fight with the wrong persons and one the students was killed. Both were high profile events. Think it was the late 70's early 80's
Woof hottie in short shorts ❤
Anyone else watch in the extreme chance you might see yourself/family? (And you know lots of photos and probably video do exist, somewhere out there, in shoeboxes in strangers' attics)
My father bought me my first baseball glove and fishing rod from that same Bradley’s back then. Seemed like yesterday.
I remember well how that mall looked back then. Good chance I was probably there when this video was shot.
Too bad the place has turned into a shell of its former self. Mapleview not far from it has long surpassed it. Unless your mall is like a square one/sherway/eaton centre type then you might as well not go to one.
We traded this experience for boxes being dropped at our front door.
Is this the one in Massachusetts?
Yes
I Miss the Old Boston
There's only one thing I don't miss about the 1980s- all the smoking. It was pervasive everywhere and it was hell as a non-smoker as smokers generally weren't considerate of non-smokers.
I miss Jordan Marsh❤️🩹
I came here for the “Puppet People”
Where are all the fat people??
Lol
Boy the 70s and 80 for fashion were just horrendus. Between those leisure suits, sideburns and big rimmed glasses.
Forty one years ago. It is strange to think that all of those kids would be in their 40s and 50s now and the young adults are seniors now.
I'm one of those guys in his 50s. I was a teenager in 1984 and some things about that time are still fresh in my memory. Believe me, it freaks me out to think about how much time has passed.
@solinvictus39 I am 68 and have very clear memories of when l was very small in the late 1950s and growing up in the 1960s and 70s. It is true that the older you get the faster the years seem to pass.
I was 2 months old 🙂
Whitey was probably down the road in Southie as that was being filmed
The Glass Slipper
I was born in 1973. This video makes me sad.
Wow TV board games were big business back then.
Lady in blue shorts at end is total milf!!!🥰
80's are in top 5 decades of all time in American history, for sure!
Where are all the Lardasses? Oh yeah it's 1984!🤣
Wow.. Low prices,People look happy and healthy. Clean and Friendly compared to this Shithole we live in now!
I was there when they tore it down. I remember 2 queers holding hands out there watching it. Those queers were a head of their time I guess.
Remember, the camera filming this was likely the size of your living room TV screen back then…..it’s not a discreet smartphone like you have today. 😊
Home video cameras back then were a little larger than a VHS tape. My dad had one.
@ many of us have never held a VHS TAPE though 🤣
Mall is awful now. Most of the established brands gone and the stores filled in with cheap shops. Clientele has changed too.
If anyone can tell me, a bunch of us went into a run down bar there for a strip show. It had a stage set higher and up behind the long bar. A disinterested older burlesque dancer was stripping to a live three piece music combo that was also set up on the stage behind the bar. Anyone know the name?
If you pissed your Captain off you walked a beat down there for punishment was a rookie cop assigned to Area A-1 in the 80's no one wanted that assignment lol
I got arrested right on that corner for absolutely nothing.. BPD and Feds thought I was selling drugs.. I was released hours later at Boston Municipal court..
Pop's smoking a cigar without a care in the world
Anyone notice there are no obese people? Consider what the internet and fast food has done to people these days
We had fast food everywhere back then. I was a teenager and I ate at Wendy's and Burger King all the time and I was skinny as a rail. Something changed with the food supply in the USA during the 1990s- probably added hormones, microplastics, and various other preservatives.
yes I was just noticing in general people are more causally well dressed than say a crowd in our average Walmart. :)
2:07 crazy to think of this big parking lot along Dartmouth street. Now currently the southwest corridor park and tent city housing and stores. Also hard to imagine all these stores in Copley mall surviving like a salon and card store and book store. This mall is dominated by high end designers now and I imagine any store with a thinner profit margin wouldn’t have a chance today. Wish the video captured some of the higher end retail of the day like a look at Neiman’s which was and still is the anchor department store of the mall.
Seriously, people are 25 lbs heavier now on average without exaggeration. Americas biggest problem, coming to a continent near you if you don’t stop copying the culture
25? I’d go with 50. But there were very few morbidly obese like now.
@@grl9917 We had one fat kid in my elementary class in the early '80s, and he was teased mercilessly. Seeing someone fat was highly unusual and almost all the fat people you saw were old. An overweight kid was a complete oddity.
01:04 BBC
I was a high school junior in 1984, just a couple of towns over. I watched to see if I saw anybody i knew. I'd forgotten how short the shorts were that guys wore back then. Hopefully, they never return. 😂
I was 12. I really miss the old mall culture. I was never much of a shopper, but it was always fun to hang out with friends, and meet new ones at the mall. Thankfully Roosevelt Field, in NY is still hanging in there! It's grown so much larger. Been going my whole life.
Yeah we used to go to the mall just to eat lol. Not just the food court, but there was a time they actually had nice steak houses in the mall.
Back then you could go to the mall without wondering if you might get attacked or shot by a feral pack of "teens". Those were the days.
MUCH less diversity, for sure. Even where I lived in Florida was majority white during that time.
I was a South Shore kid, Dedham Mall and Braintree Plaza, but this was good to see. Wish I could have seen more store names so we could play "Out-of-Business-Bingo".
just old enough to remember when it looked like this
