This movie is relatable to all groups. My grandparents were Eastern European Jewish and we used to have family meetings and get togethers. I’m 64 and unfortunately the family is spread all over and we no longer speak Yiddish . I can definitely relate to the family dynamic change.

this is one of my favourite movies i first saw it when i was 14 back in the 80's didn't have a problem following it, but over the years rewatching it i have got more and more out of it. as for remaking i agree it would need an hbo type tv series treatment

I'm came to America in 1988, this movie The story of an immigrant is my story too, that explains why I'm getting emotional every time I watch it.

I showed this for years in college courses & students all loved it & related to it, despite differences of time, place, heritage.

My favorite film. Ever. Always will be. I’ve never come across a movie that takes me on a journey that is so relatable, seems so authentic to life, is unpretentious in its storytelling, delivers spot-on performances, gorgeous production design. Every time I’ve seen it, I’m sobbing-literally-at the end. I treasure this film. If I were given the chance to meet ANY Hollywood celebrity, it would be Mr. Levinson so I could thank him for Avalon.

This movie is gold, and 13 is an unlucky number; pick 13 1/2 or something. Great voiceovers, btw, reminds me of bygone days and simpler times. Any ideas about doing a review of The Boys?

Interesting stuff, thanks! This is one of my favorite movies, and a beautiful example of Randy Newman's genius (as well as Levinson's, of course). I remember watching the Academy Awards for that year and hoping so much that Randy would receive the Oscar for Best Original Score. Some insipid Disney movie's score took the honors for that category instead. Randy was robbed as far as I'm concerned.

We are still in this quasi-lock down here in California, so we apologize for the sound of the show - With everything going on currently, the show will return to "normal", hopefully, next week. Thank you all for your support and for listening to the show! Also - No Lauree, I don't wanna be friends.

If Dani lets Christian live, it's likely the cult kills them both. So, I believe in those moments of decision, she ultimately chose the lesser of two evils, and to protect herself, and her only source of emotional freedom by eliminating the last person who could have taken it all away. Once she realizes everyone is dead, she is not considering the cult her new family, but more as her captors. It's like taking Stockholm Syndrome to a whole different level! And, the smile she gives at the very end is her giving into her captors, and literally going insane. Here is the last line from the script that reinforces what i'm saying: A SMILE finally breaks onto Dani’s face. She has surrendered to a joy known only by the insane. She has lost herself completely, and she is finally free. It is horrible and it is beautiful.
