Day 1 - First Steps - PCT SOBO 2024
Просмотров 3085 месяцев назад
My first steps on the PCT in 2024. Took a shuttle from Mazama to Harts Pass. Got my PCT tag from the ranger, signed the log book, and cached some food in the bear box. Shuttle drove me up a short ways to Slate Pass and dropped me off. I hiked north toward the Canadian border and camped between Holman Pass and Rock Pass, saving the toughest snow traverses for tomorrow. Plan is to tag the border ...

Nice little tour! How did you get to Mazama? - seems like it's at the very end of the road!
Got there by car. My mom lives near Seattle. I drove in her car to Mazama, with my mom and my younger brother, then they drove on for their own vacation. In 2021, Mazama was closed due to a fire, and I got to Ross Lake with a ride from a trail angel. There are some public transportation options as far as Winthrop, and I hear it's an easy hitch from Winthrop to Mazama.
What a great adventure. Don't think I saw you after Tuolomne Meadows. Hope you had a great end to the trip!
Hey there! Long time, no see. Yes, it was amazing. I finished on November 18. Glad to see you made it, and you're on RUclips, too. Your videos look awesome. So many great memories.
Nice and slow in recording. Thanks. Have fun.
Thanks for watching!
So many types of terrain in one day!
Yes, definitely. So much variety in nature. Moving all day through the changing landscape makes me happy. :)
I enjoyed your video. Looking forward to watching your SOBO trip. I'm an old guy who is looking at doing the same in 2026. I live near the southern terminus so I'll be essentially walking home.
Thanks for watching. I'm 58, and I met a lot of thru-hikers who were older than me. The oldest, I think, was 73, and he'd hiked the PCT many times in his younger days. I hope your plans work out for 2026. The PCT is an amazing adventure!
Curious about the 5+ month hiatus from Day 4 to Day 5?
Yeah, sorry about that. I had high hopes of posting daily from the trail, and that didn't work out. I spent those 4+ months hiking the PCT and recording footage. Too hard to edit and upload from the PCT. I'm not sure how other people manage it, other than to take a lot of zero days in hotel rooms with decent WiFi. Editing each video takes me two or three hours, which was cutting into my hiking and sleeping time. I'm not a fast hiker. To make my daily miles, I needed to hike all day (10-18 hours), then fall asleep. Rinse, repeat. Also, I had very little cell service on trail, especially in WA and the Sierra. I took only a few zero days in hotels, where the WiFi was usually decent enough for uploading large video files. I uploaded the first batch of videos during a zero day in Snoqualmie, using the hotel's WiFi, which was pretty good. I uploaded the Day 4 video during a zero day in Trout Lake using the general store's WiFi, which had very little bandwidth. It took 26 hours to upload just the one video (about 6gb). Spending more than 24 hours uploading one day's video was not a sustainable pace. I needed to prioritize hiking over waiting in town for uploads to finish. After Trout Lake, I decided just to record my daily videos on trail and edit them when I got home. I'm off trail now, and back to editing and posting. I completed the trail in 142 days, so there will be at least 143 videos in the series. If I can get into and sustain a good editing rhythm, I'll be uploading a new PCT video each day for the next four and half months.
@@DavidWisehart Understood. Actually, I was concerned that you may have had an injury or other calamity. I am glad that you made the entire trip! Bravo.
I am just a bit confused. At such an obvious remote location I didn't see any illegal aliens sneaking into Canada! Weird.
Awesome! Thanks!
I just discovered your channel. I'm looking forward to following your adventure. I'm planning on doing the same in 2026. I live near the southern PCT terminus I'll essentially be walking home. Good luck on your journey.
The PCT is amazing. Hope you can make it work in 2026. Adventure of a lifetime. Thanks for following.
Awesome views and it looks like no smoke and no mosquitoes. You are bringing back some memories….bitter sweet watching your hike while sitting on a couch
Thinking of you and the SOBO fam on trail. Retracing our 2021 steps brings back memories. Fun times. Hope you’re well.
Great Job with the Video. Showing the Scenery and the commentary of your experience.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I shit my pants while watching this absolute masterpiece of a film
Nice twist!
